Current Losing Streak
Saturday's loss to Richmond marked our ninth loss in a row, equalling our losing streaks of 2001 (R13 - R21) and 1988 (R14 - R22).
We have not lost ten in a row since 1986 when we lost the first 12 games.
If we can't knock off any of Carlton, North, Freo or Gold Coast over the next month, it'll be 13 losses in a row. We haven't done that in a single season since 1917.
The one positive in losing nine in a row, the last two times we've done it, we've come out and won the next two games. And both times, we've beaten Carlton in one of those two wins.

Re: Current Losing Streak
Losing streaks are the only records this team is likely to break. I have followed the Saints for almost 50 years and although I have seen some very ordinary teams, the current collection of players are by far the worst for skills, pace and decision making. With most other teams improving or already well above us our next win will probably be a way off and then only by accident.

Re: Current Losing Streak
If it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, take encouragement from the fact that the last two times we've had losing streaks this long, we've finished top four just three years later.

St Kilda lost their first 48 games in the VFL from rd 1 1897.

Re: Current Losing Streak
Perhaps Richo should take the players to the movies, that's always a good way to end a streak....
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Doesnt get close to some of those sides in the mid 80's IMO.

Agree. We were rubbish then and had no draft to help us.plugger66 wrote:BadRossco wrote:Losing streaks are the only records this team is likely to break. Saying that, we haven't got close to realistically winning since the game in NZ.

Re: Current Losing Streak
If we win on the weekend we'll still be bottom , so the coach may try something different .
We can't get 3 picks in the top 20 at the draft ( which is what the club wants ) by winning games .

Love to think we arent winning just to get good picks but im pretty sure we arent winning because we arent good enough. Surely we would get off the bottom if we won this week unless somehow Brisbane win which would be very doubtful.

Was thinking about this today, figuring we'd be nearing the longest losing streak since I've been supporting the club. Thanks for confirming the humbling news..

Funny but I don't really care about this. Just finding the right players and developing them is on my mind.

Re: Current Losing Streak
1985 we lost our first three matches of the season by more than 100 points and finished bottom with three flukey wins. 1986 we won twice and also picked up the wooden spoon.
So Saints fans over about 45 are in familiar territory. Let's hope it turns around sooner rather than later.

9 losses in a row
I understand that we are in a rebuilding process and that wins are not
the biggest priority. But we have lost 9 on the trot and, despite our injuries
I have been extremely disappointed with the level of simple physical effort
over those games. People are quick to compare us to the 2000/01/02 team but
Football has changed so much in a decade and a bit. I wish we could be in the
that era now but the way it has all has changed, it is so much more difficult.
As much is their is confidence in a quickish turnaround, unless we luck in with
our now admired drafting acumen, we will be in monstrous trouble.
i didn't mind the idea of getting Jarred Waite in for 2 years on not much coin to
help Rooey out and so we don't have to go to him always, and to
protect a potential key forward we get in the draft to AFL too early. In fact
the more a think about the idea, the more I think it will be beneficial.
But to get back on topic, I know where we are. But Brissy has upest wins, GWS does,
Melbourne do and the Dogs are now pretty solid. WE cannot become irrelevent,
we never were under GT and we cannot afford to be now. I don't care where you
sit, 9 losses in a row is terrible for morale everywhere- and it should not be swept
under the carpet. I am a member who goes every week as I am sure many of you
guys are. At the moment, all we can demand is a red hot crack from all, and currently
it is selective. I am so sick of Rooey getting angry at the delivery. He is the captain
and needs to show strong positive body language always. Negative reinforcement to
some young midfieiders from the captain is very poor. Tell them at training, not during
a game.
Anyhow, I understand how we are becoming conditioned to lose but we need the hope of
some unexpected wins in the last 10 games- every other club seems to be able
to pull a few off. Lets bloody beat the s*** out our bunny (Carlton) this week and avoid
the irrelevance of 10 straight losses.

Re: Current Losing Streak
Yeah what hurts more is 4 years ago we were in the GF - a quick fall from the heights. How the previous management of the club has let us all down.
Hopefully the new Pres, CEO will set the Club up to ensure we can sustain long periods
of success like the stronger clubs do.

Re: Current Losing Streak
Another 30 possessions to Schneider on the weekend in the 2s, if he doesn't play again then we're definitely not interested in winning. Should of been in the side against Richmond after his previous 33 possesions the week before.
ATM it looks more about finding out all of our players capabilities, rather than make an educated guess at seasons end. who to promote, who to de-list, who shows promise etc etc. All about list management and preparing for next year. After all who would of thought Shenton and Minchington would do so well. (good to see)
I keep hoping for a win, the upset, however even with a full list I wouldn't tip us to win another game this year.
