Yes,Paul Ahern is Indigenous,my wife went to school with his mum.Great family and the kid is a gun athlete.Mother is a Saints supporter, dad barracks for the Tigers.borderbarry wrote:After watching both games yersterday, all the top 20 and phantom drafts are obsolete. Also that the new Garlett kid was by far the best of the indigenous boys on offer, unless Paul Ahern is indigenous. The S.A> lad was the best of the big boys by far.

agree.WinnersOnly wrote:Agreed Old Mate our midfield is very ordinary and Petracca is a ripper! I like the look of Pettraca (ready to go now) and Pickett (serious outside speed and skill which we need so badly).
Patracca is currently who I would pick at selection one. I don't care that he's not the key forward we need. He's dominated the Nationals and would be odds-on to win the Larke Medal. His playing style is a cross between Dangerfield and Pendlebury - Very powerful and clean midfielder-forward with a basketball background. The forwards this year just haven't performed.
We don't need a plugger full forward if we have no midfield to deliver it to him.
We need midfield 'A' grade skill and Patracca seems a really good choice.
Midfielders with a bit of a aggro as well would be good.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Im interested to hear more about Ahern and Garlett.
We desperately need some outside pace and every top 4 side has at least one Indigenous champ.
swans - goodes jetta
port - wingard
hawks - rioli burgoyne hill
freo - walters johnson hill
Maybe we just get another two gun midfielders this year.
Petracca plus some other kid....
Then pull another two key fwds some other way ....

Petracca for me too. He could be a dangerfield type of lump mid who kicks goals. He is like a v8 Midfielder could be the best player in the draft.WinnersOnly wrote:Agreed Old Mate our midfield is very ordinary and Petracca is a ripper! Petracca looks like a classic Man Child
Is he dominating because he is stronger (bigger - 92kg) than other skinny under developed players in the u18 comp??

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
McCartin for me or a trade with pick #1 to get one of the GWS key forwards. I know our mids are currently not great but I still think we have more here that can come on. How much longer will Roo go on.
There'll be really good mids inside the top 40 by the sounds of it that we'll get a go at. They need speed and skill - outside.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

possible - hed have to test very well at the combine for me to use a pick 1 on him.Devilhead wrote:Petracca looks like a classic Man Child

I don't buy this argument. Similar comments were made re Rich, Hawkins, Wines and Dunstan. They've all proved great value where each has been selected.Devilhead wrote:Petracca looks like a classic Man Child

For mine, Petracca has too many qualities for his game not to translate to AFL. It's also worth mentioning he's dropped 8 kilos to become a midfielder. His weight now is 84, so still a lump of a kid but more suited to the midfield.
I still believe the top draft pick is a race between Wright and McCartin and Petracca is more a 3-10 pick as far as the recruiting industry sees them. A team will get an absolute bargain with Petracca IMO.

Well then it should be between Petracca and McCartin then. Hope we show our due diligence on both plus any other player worthy of our pick.Old Mate wrote:I don't buy this argument. There are other options like what Melbourne did last year that could work, but players and picks we receive must outweigh the top picks in the draft.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
I remain a skeptical hippo on using a number 1 on McCartin or Wright.
Wright might be good but isnt a pure fwd. Seems more like a Kreuzer type.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Agree Con although a little (only a little) sceptical on using pick 1 on McCartin. He did kick a couple of goals against SA on the weekend, conditions for poor for forwards and delivery was also poor. See how he tracks for the remained of the champs. But right now, I'm liking Petracca. Won't go pick 1 though.Con Gorozidis wrote:I remain a skeptical hippo on using a number 1 on McCartin or Wright.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Except he has reinvented himself as a mid from a small kpf. He dominated as an undersized chf. Actually lost a lot of weight.Devilhead wrote:Petracca looks like a classic Man Child

If he can't cope with poor delivery then he's not going to go too well in our side.Old Mate wrote:Agree Con although a little (only a little) sceptical on using pick 1 on McCartin. He did kick a couple of goals against SA on the weekend, conditions for poor for forwards and delivery was also poor.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Having been to a fair few of the U18 games to date I have to agree with those who are plumping for the best player available irrespective of height or capacity to fill 'holes' in our list. We have too many deficiencies in our current list to be limiting ourselves at the draft. Those who are thinking that we would see results immediately from the current crop of U18 talls should bear in mind that there is no player in this draft of Boyd's pre-eminence and he needs a couple of years in the system before being asked to compete regularly at AFL level.
Groupthink is the hallmark of draft discussuions. There will be plenty of people on this board telling us to take McCartin having never seen him play, the same posters who want every AFL listed player at Sandy and every rookie to play in the ones. Have a look at the phantom drafts page on bigfooty. Mostly identical and subject to wild fluctuations in the fortnight before the draft itself as club positions become clearer. Many so called pundits may watch a few TAC cup games but don't really follow junior footy.

Brayshaw Durdin or Petracca for me. Just keep loading up on skilled midfielders and theyll make good honest forwards be enough to win games.
