Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Just watched SA thrash Vic Country. Not much to get excited about re McCartin, Goddard and Lamb. Durdin from SA looked Ok. Personally I liked SA's little guys - reminded me of watching Platten and Naley when they played for SA in the late 80s.

"They left last night still unsure at how the first round will look, with Sam Durdin (South Australia), Paddy McCartin (Geelong Falcons), Peter Wright (Calder Cannons) the popular picks to go No.1.
McCartin, a diabetic 194cm key forward who St Kilda would love as a Nick Riewoldt replacement, is the favourite but one club said while he was the “safest pick”, Durdin could trump him.
McCartin booted Vic Country’s only two goals in its 63-point loss as Melbourne father-son prospect Billy Stretch sparked South Australia early and finished with 18 disposals."

Those who witnessed the display said it had all the hallmarks of a budding AFL key forward, even if schoolboy football is rarely used as a strong guideline. But McCartin was opposed at times by a promising young Xavier College defender named Jack Whitehead.
McCartin will get the opportunity to further impress tomorrow when the U18 division 1 games are played at Simmonds Stadium in Geelong. As a Type 2 diabetic he requires five to six injections a day and must come to the bench during games to check his blood."
Type 2 diabetic that needs 5 to 6 injections a day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a type 2 diabetic and I only take 500mg metformin hydrochloride tablets twice a day.
The metformin helps my cells absorb energy, a job that is normally done by insulin.
If that fails the next step in treatment is drugs that crank up the insulin output of the pancreas.
Only when that fails do you go to insulin injections.
I can understand an elite athlete monitoring their blood sugar regularly so that their blood sugar does not fall too low and the have a hypo BUT ..................................
Doctors please help, but if this guy is on insulin injections he is surely a type 1 diabetic.
Type 2 diabetics have a problem that their muscle cells are not good at absorbing energy from the blood stream.
My diabetes does not stop me skiing, but hey I'm not exactly elite anymore.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
I guarantee you that us, Brisbane, Dogs, Richmond et al will do due diligence and will be talking with diabetes experts to see what this means exactly for an athlete needing to compete in one of the most physically punishing, endurance based sports on the planet. Are there other athletes with this severe condition playing at the highest level and do they have any problems?. In the last quarter of a brutally grinding grand final, after a long year of tough footy, could there be problems? All that will be weighed up. It's not much different than other physical problems a lot of the draftees will have playing tough footy from a young age. Players do get passed up if clubs have concerns over their long term health. But it doesn't seem to be affecting him so far.ace wrote: Type 2 diabetic that needs 5 to 6 injections a day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After watching both games yersterday, all the top 20 and phantom drafts are obsolete. Disappointed in so many of the top kids. I thought the tiny S.A. captain was brilliant. Also that the new Garlett kid was by far the best of the indigenous boys on offer, unless Paul Ahern is indigenous. The S.A> lad was the best of the big boys by far.

Prefer Petracca by a mile personally no risk involved
Like McCartin but really hope the recruiters also recognise Saints have worst midfield in the comp
Big guys take time 2015 there will be a lot plus Sloane.
Prefer they pinch Jaksch Orourke draft Petracca Ahern Urban & Towers Membrey from swans.

Not necessarily. Plenty of Type 2 diabetics take insulin. Insulin is prescribed when the usual medications don't work effectively. It shouldn't exclude him from an elite sporting career. Do not want us to be the club to pick number one. Hickey, Longer, Stanley, Pierce, Holmes = do not want Wright.
McCartin looks ok, but far from a standout must have #1.
Give me a GWS tall fwd then draft a decent mid, would much rather Brayshaw, Weller, Petracca etc over these question mark tall forwards...

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Pretty silly peeps saying that its the worst year to have the number #1 pick? Really? That honestly can't be judged for another 10 years.
And their performance in the carnival isnt the sole indication of a players potential - Lance Franklin had a shocking U18 carnival and slipped to #4-5, he's going OK.....!
We're still going to get a 'good' youngster if we use the draft pick.
And we can draft whichever youngster we feel is the best player in the draft or suits a required need the best.
And if we decide to trade it then surely its the biggest bargaining chip on the trade table?
Just seems a defeatist mindset that so many people think its a bad year to have the #1 pick. Would we prefer there to be a standout #1 like the Jack Watts year? Just because there is a standout #1 doesn't guarantee that player will be the best in that draft.
We might not get the next Nick Riewoldt, but hey - there's only been one of him in the last 15 years and there probably wont ever be another player like him, so we need to stop expecting that we are a chance to find a riewoltd replacement.
BUT, I think our strategy going into the draft is going to be a bit more around certainty, rather than a very prospective youngster - a bit like the Paul Roos mentality. Pelchen and co will consider trading the pick for a PROVEN young player, like a Shiel or O'Meara etc.. (I think this is however unlikely)
The next choice would be a pick downgrade - again for a proven young player and another 1st round pick. Eg Dom Tyson and pick 9.
Failing that, I feel that Pelchen and co may take a player from left field like Petracca - ie arguably the best mid in the draft.
Im not saying the pick #1 would be wasted on a Wright or McCartin, but talls are more prospective than mids and i think it suits our rebuild more to load up on quality mids and then bring in a PROVEN key forward via free agency or trade in say 2 years time.
IMO all the talk about trading for Patton or Boyd is as prospective as drafting Wright or McCartin.
Boyd can't get a game in GWS 1's. I know its his first season etc.. but its not like he is kicking BIG bags in the NEAFL where the standard is well below VFL, SANFL and the WAFL. Will he improve and does he have potential - perhaps, but then so does a Wright or McCartin.
Patton also is by no means a proven forward yet and he's playing 2nd fiddle to Cameron. 23 games and 28 goals to his name, 3rd season and had a bad knee previously.
I suppose I'm saying that I think we will take the conservative road to suit our rebuild and trade or draft the best possible young mid rather than an unproven forward.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Really interesting take Purps. But history shows the idea of bringing in a quality forward from another club rarely happens unless you have Sydney's advantages. Carlton, Bulldogs, Brisbane, Richmond, Freo, Adelaide et etc etc have been trying to do that for years. Unless there is a Judd or Hodge type mid, If we have the no. 1 pick this is a rare chance to get a big power forward we need. It may not come again. We have had everything against us this year (new coach and game plan, injuries, inexperienced kids) and yet we are only one game off a lot of teams. Who knows where we will finish next year.PurpleHayes wrote:Pretty silly peeps saying that its the worst year to have the number #1 pick? Really? That honestly can't be judged for another 10 years.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Remember Nick Dodge and Ryan Burton are ineligible this draft and both are key fwds who could be better than this years crop.
I like the look of Pettraca (ready to go now) and Pickett (serious outside speed and skill which we need so badly).

Patracca is currently who I would pick at selection one. I don't care that he's not the key forward we need. He's dominated the Nationals and would be odds-on to win the Larke Medal. His playing style is a cross between Dangerfield and Pendlebury - Very powerful and clean midfielder-forward with a basketball background. The forwards this year just haven't performed.

Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Agreed Old Mate our midfield is very ordinary and Petracca is a ripper! I am not excited about either McCartin or Wright and believe our midfield needs to be dominant before we worry about more key fowards....Old Mate wrote:They do look good. Re: jon anderson's top 20 draft picks
Does anyone think GWS would give up Boyd for our No 1 pick should we get it?
They've already got plenty of KF's as it is. They may want Wright.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.
