Tim Allen.

Dominated in the twos and never got enough of a go at senior level.

Agree with others I had high hopes for Andrew Manning, John Peter-Budge, Jon Georgiou and Tim Allen. Bit like the Clarke brothers Xavier and Raph all looked like they had the skills to become great players but none of them made it. Invested a fair amount of hope in all of them along the journey.

On the strict criteria supplied by the OP I guess my guy would have been Jon Favier I think they may have even made him captain of the reserves towards the end

Paul Temay had the turning circle of a Cattle Train

Grant Thomas - Had one outstanding season at CHB looked like our next champion then got injured I think and on coming back never hit the heights again bit like Goose Maguire remember pinning a lot of my hopes for our rise up the ladder on him but kind of fizzled out.

Had high hopes for Gorden Fode, Craig Devonport, Phil Cronin,
Mark Scott was a bit of a one trick pony but an incredibly accurate shot at goal used to kick double figure bags in the reserves
Con Gorozidis was everything a 10 year old loves in a footballer like so many in the 80's seemed to come out of nowhere shine for a season then disappear just as quickly. What happened to him.
Peter Kiel and Greg Packham burst on the scene about the same time then just faded away
Greg McAdam starred for a bit then vanished

But ultimately the player who could have been anything but wasn't was Rod Owen was kind of symbolic of what was wrong with St Kilda at the time

At least this is my memory of how it was others may be able to provide more reliable recollections

Actually, when on the rare occasion Jack kicked a goal, it was an axccident because he was actually trying to pass it to Plugger.

Jayson "Jack" Daniels is a good response. He was all heart. Loved his endeavour on the field, but just an awful, awful kick of the ball. Every time he kicked the ball it seemed to be a helicopter punt of sorts.

I was going to mention Rocket Owen. But was he "mediocre" as a player? Hard to determine. He had great skills and instincts for the game, but I can't help but feel that he fell victim to alcoholism.

Although you are spot on about him being symbolic of that period in the club.

In the old days when it was common for people to drape home made banners on the fence, there was one at Moorabbin that read "Paul Temay Can't Play". It was, I think, on the occasion of Temay's senior debut.

From my recollection it was later revealed to be te work of his "mates". :D

During our lean years we'd get excited by the slightest glimmer of hope.Players like Dean Herbert from Richmond with big reputation but no interest, Allan Sinclair from Fitzroy,John Blair from South Melbourne and the one that springs to mind the much hyped transfer of Dave Grainger from Port Adelaide who was a hitman in the SANFL but was a St Kilda Under 19's before moving to Adelaide and then returning to play a couple of matches. Nicknamed Grave Danger. We always hoped that one of these characters would lift us but were none the less entertaining. I think Stephen Parsons ex Tiger involved in the infamous Windy Hill brawl played some reserves games.

he used to get the ball abit, but his kicking! People on here would be squealing.
Jack was a good goer but you're right about his kicking - ten times worse than CJ.
Though i think he was involved in that final play to give Plugger the ball against carlton.

Yeah, I wouldn't have considered Odgers to be "mediocre". He was our vice captain in '86. Reckon he may have lead the team on a few occasions that year though. I seem to recall Barks being injured at some stage during that season.

The only problem with Rod was he lacked heart for the contest.
All the skill in the world.
But built like Tarzan, played like Jane.

Will never forget that game in '87 at Princess Park where we lost by a darn point to the Scumbaggers.

Rocket absolutely dominated with 7 goals. I think Plugger also booted half a dozen in support. After that day I thought he had finally shown what he was made of and those two would go on to form a powerhouse forward line. But as you said, perhaps he didn't have the ticker in the end. Have heard stories that he would hit the piss really hard, so obviously that didn't do him any favours.

A player many Geelong supporters used to rib me about was Gordon Fode.
I thought he was going to be a player. Cut down with injuries.
Started on the half back flank and then went forward.
Kicked a couple of bags if I recall but then faded.

Mmm. I suggest you watch the last 7 H&A games of 1997 again. His loss, in the last 5 minutes in Round 22 of the H&A round of 1997, cost us the flag. Stan as made this point many times.

In terms of the last decade, The Dud is an obvious nomination.

Just have courage to say jack Steven. I think percentage wise he would be one of the biggest winners ever of a B&F.

Who is "The Dud"?

Big Lazar was a huge loss, as was Spider and Joel Smith for our 1997 finals campaign.

Has Rohan Smith got a mention? Bald headed lad recruited from Port Adelaide in the late 80's, early 90's from memory.

What about that Guy that was also called Burke around the Nathan Burke era with the bald head. He looked like Mr Burns. I used to love him. Was kind of like from another era, like Baldock had a crazy twin that got locked in the chook shed for 30 years.

Darren Bourke? Son of former Melbourne player Barry Bourke.
