Mediocre Players with Cult Status
Remember those guys who were Reserves specialists and everyone loved to watch them before the big game at 2pm?
They'd get a go in the firsts and they'd be back in the twos a week later.
I'll start the ball rolling with Andrew Manning. Saw him take some towering marks at Reserve level, but could never seem to bring it at senior level.
"GO MUMBLES!"
A shame he ended up at Flatulence Hill.

Good one!
Justin Plapp? I always remember him kicking goals in the VFL.
And we always thought Johnny Georgiou didn't get enough of a go. Not sure if that was just in my house though.

Re: Mediocre Players with Cult Status
Plapp was actually a former mediocre Richmond player with cult status. Don't think he had the same sort of status as he did at Punt Road when he joined us. From memory, he was kind of Beau Maister-esque as a player.
In saying this, we should never recruit a former Richmond player EVER again.

Re: Mediocre Players with Cult Status
From my ever deteriorating memory I thought the statrt of Troy's last season at the Saints was his best. He started like a rocket to the point that I thought he would have been in the first 8 to 12 picked each week then he was injured with a reasonably long term problem. He came back about 4 to 5 weeks before the season's end and I was surprised to see him gone because I thiought he had turned the corner. Don't know about cult status but thought he may have missed outgringo wrote:Daniel the Wolfman Wulf. Ralphsmith. Troy Schwartz.

Some good names so far.
Loved Ralphy. One of my favourite ex-Hawthorn guys who came to the club.
Did Troy Schwartz have a cult following? Unfortunately, I still have the memory of him getting booed by our own supporters during the presentation of the Wizard Cup GF in 2004.
Smooth Booth! Can't remember him as a player as I was so young, but I liked his around the grounds match reports and score updates on 3LO radio back in the day.plugger66 wrote:Doug Booth
The Wolfman - if only he kicked that goal against in the draw against the Swines in 2002. Boy, we Saints fans really gave it to Barry Hall that night.gringo wrote:Daniel the Wolfman Wulf. Ralphsmith. Troy Schwartz.

Yeah I struggled with Wool- he went okay. Just one of my cult figures but possibly a bit too good. I was pretty young in thoe days but didn't Rene Kink play for us for a couple of years and Jacko. Both a bit better than the guidelines but classic figures.
Big Lazer was probably a bit too good too but the old dodgy croatian car salesman was def a cult figure too.

Yes, Temay! Loved his work in the twos. And he did sport a not quite sharpie-style mullet like Plugger's. He managed to notch up 50 senior career games in a handful of years with us. Definitely a great example of in one week and out the next.satchmo wrote:Paul Temay. Geez he looked like Plugger.
