She is a very highly regarded coach. The equal if not better than any in her field.

It is not spin, but a shrewd and worthy appointment.

In ten years she will be senior coach. Seriously.

By then you should all have plenty of opportunity to implode.

and re comments by others-- what should count is the number of Footballers, coaches and administators who are sending congratulations and well wishes.

Richo's letter to Members



Dear Saints members,
Last Friday night gave our club an opportunity to take to the big stage with a Friday night game against a powerhouse club of the AFL.
While we were competitive in parts of the game, we did allow Collingwood to get away from us in the end and we've come away from the night with plenty to work on.
The next few weeks see us coming up against some really quality teams which presents a tremendous opportunity for our young players.
This Saturday’s game against Port Adelaide represents a big opportunity for our young team to come up against the most in-form team in the AFL.
The Power are a hard-working and very talented team. Having worked closely with the Port Adelaide players in 2013, I am well aware of the job at hand and I look forward to seeing how our boys respond.
With such a young list there have been a lot of fresh new faces at St Kilda in recent times and we welcomed a new one on Monday with the appointment of Peta Searle as a development coach with the Saints Player Academy.

Peta comes to the club with tremendous credentials through her work in the VFL, VAFA and the VWFL as well as experience in the education system.
Obviously there is added attention given to Peta’s appointment since she is the first female to be appointed full-time to an AFL coaching staff.
While we are proud to be the first club to have made such an appointment, I can assure you that we would not have done so if we hadn’t identified Peta as the best possible candidate for the position.

Why should we cop flack from other clubs about this appointment. At least our coaches have not filled their players with illegal drugs.

Would the Australian Womens Netball Team be ok with a male coach roaming through the change rooms. That's one problem I can see. Worth the experiment though if our budget doesn't allow us to employ the best available coaches at AFL level. I hope she succeeds.

I am certain there are loads of male coaches in womens sports (hockey, basketball, swimming soccer). The Matildas coach is definitely a dude

Anyone remember when Joyce Brown was rumoured to take over at Fitzroy as coach back when they were on their last legs?

She was a tough lady as well. I enjoyed listening to her special comments on 774's radio commentary over a season or two in the late 90s. Seemed to have an excellent knowledge of the game.

Peta got one thing wrong though... but you have to wait till her final sentence...

Well looking back on the enormous PR this has had and almost all positive, this has to be the best AFL story of the season. Gilligan will be very happy with us and Finnis will get an elephant stamp.

I dont care if she is a woman, all I care about is she is the best person for the role. She has as much experience as probably 500 others through out Australia. I know that Con. I just thought I'd throw out a hoary old chest nut to generate some discussion. Not mentioning any names (Legendary) but some people take themselves waaaay too seriously when it comes to certain social topics. It makes you wonder what is going on in their subconscious.

Plugger I think Spacey was referring to past scandals and negative PR that our club normally gets. The overwhelming vibe of this event is all positive. Peta even was interviewed on the Today show this morning, and that's Sydney centric!

I can remember when Grant Thomas took the players off to "community camps" giving clinics and interacting with locals around the State. Similarly, he introduced the concept of "leadership groups", the trips to South Africa and China were also groundbreaking in helping to bond the players. At the time, these concepts were ridiculed, and yet today are a part and parcel of the AFL. I've seen Ms Searle's profile on AFL TV and she comes across as honest, direct and knowledgeable. I for one, am happy to see the lady get the gig! Welcome aboard Peta!
