Is everyone so sure they will have flags on a platter like most predict ??. Teams like swans port and collingwood look strong for coming seasons. Champion team will always beat team champions

First you need a level playing field, then you now have a 1 in 18 chance.
But there has never been a level playing field and the corrupt vested interests in the AFL will never allow it as their "vision" is more important than fairness.

Highly likely:
Steven, Billings, Dunstan, Longer, Wright, Newnes,

Likely:
Hickey, Acres, Webster, Templeton,

Maybe
Bruce, Delaney, Markworth, Weller, Curren, Saunders, Stanley, Lee, Roberton

With a few lean years ahead if we can add a few stars, a few more B graders and get a couple of players out of the Likely/Maybe pile… plus bring 1 or 2 serious free agents in, hopefully we'll have a pretty solid team running around.

Both Port Adelaide and Sydney had a few really big wins at the draft. Collingwood too for that matter. Collingwood over a few years added Thomas, Brams and Sidebottom after having grabbed Pendlebury and co before that. Port added Wines and Wingard and finally started to get a good return on guys like Hartlett and Boak who were a bit like Armo, slow to come on.

We need to pick well and life will be good, you waste picks and you prolong mediocrity. If all of Acres, Billings and Dunstan turn out to be very high level players it will be a draft to remember. It will be a very solid platform to build a future around.

Totally agree bro. The Suns may not even win one. They have more chance but it's still going to be tough. The Giants are a rabble right now.

Its never one in 18. maths suggests it is but we play on a footy field and also clubs are at different stages of development. At the start of this year only about 6 could win it. pretty much the same every year and even if everything was level for 100 years it would even be close to most side have between 4 and 5 flags.

I think you guys are in for a rude shock... Both of these sides will be powerhouses with their current lists, more talent in 2 teams than we have ever seen before... just a matter of time now.

Think Port need to to be applauded for having some guts and bringing in players that I think the wider public thought weren't going to be that good ie: Monfries, White, Shulz, even Polec has come on quicker than anyone could have imagined...Was it luck/great talent ID/coaching and develpoment...probably a combo of all!!

Yup they have lots of talent. They fell hard after the 2007 GF and cashed in with their picks. Some savvy trading getting Ebert 8-) South Australian, Polec 8-) South Australian
, Schulz 8-) South Australian and Monfries 8-) South Australian

has significantly sped up their rebuild as well. A lot can be learnt by the way they went about things

8-) All went home hence why clubs want kids from home state most times hence the " Aish "factor being considered before recruiting one.

I agree about strong management and leadership- Koch and co really made a point of having high expectations. Good list management is also vital. They made a point of getting strong effective forwards over the last couple of years and now have a lot of fire-power with Shultz, Monfries, Wingard and co. which means they can usually kick good enough scores to win. In comparison, our recruiting and development has been really poor in regards to forwards over the last three or four years and now we are paying for it.

Dont underestimate the effect Darren Burgess (fitness guy) has had on the group. Port have been running out games as good as any side for the last 18 months. They dipped a little bit in the 2nd half of last year, but managed to find that extra gear going into the pointy end.

They just seem to have the right balance between experience and youngsters, and between guns and GOP's.

And a coach who they all love...

In theory you are right. But it's how they are developed and who is retained that are keys, along with how they handle finals pressure.

Aren't they the ones that were put straight on the GWS list as 17 year olds and never went into a draft? So kind of like number one picks, or maybe all high first round draft picks - just in case they didin't get enough.

Sometimes s*** just goes right. They had been down so long they had players on cheapie contracts and then brought in outsiders because they had heaps of cap space. The Crows are much further away but have less cap space. Still the thing that gets you back up is luck with recruits. Wines turned out to be a gun but i think recruiters get too fixated on test results and forget to watch performances. Viney looked a mile in front of him on paper but Wines has hit the ground running. Wingard is just one of those hard to know what he'd do at AFL level.

I'm aware they were different topics and as Perfectionist pointed out, one was about how we can emulate Port.

Rightly or wrongly, we have a forum specifically for discussing the opposition. Part of the role of the moderators is to keep each forum as a whole on topic.

I think you are doing a fine job. its nearly been a week back for me and you havent given me a warning. I was about to say your signature gives me hope in that regard but I noticed its been changed. Booooooooooooooooooooo.

My point being it will probably be a good thing if our rebiuld takes a long time because most teams that peak over the next 10 years will probably still pull up short while the franchise teams are in flag collecting mode.
I must have mis-read this… as Port should should win the flag this year as Gold Coast & GWS will start winning after this year.

My mistake.

I noticed Port at the start of last season in the pre season comp- they looked fitter and faster than us on a very hot day when we played them..our midfield looked like old draught horses plodding along..similar to our recent games!

Im sure our guys are very fit but it wont make them faster. We have many slow midfielders or at least average paced ones. Second halves havent been our worry. i think it seems we go ok when the other sides come back to our level.

Will have a look at the same time span.....

Say their 2007 is our 2010, four years later their 2011 is our 2014..... thus their 2014 top four is 2017..... not far away from where we are looking at being.
Interesting to look at their 2008 list compared to our 2011/12 list. Would be important to note that lyons drafting was terrible and the last three drafts have been compromised. But shows what good drafting and coaching can do.

I wish that would happen but these are the reasons I think we are way behind Port. Firstly the compromised draft. Not much we can do about that though. Now using the dates you mentioned I have gone to the previous years draft as that is when the players you draft play in the next season.

In the 2006 draft Port got Boak, Gray and westoff. In the 2010 draft we got no players of note. In the 2007 draft Port only got Lobbe of note. In the 2011 draft we got Newnes and Webster of note but 2 early to call on either. In the 2008 draft Port got Hartlett and Trengove. In the 2012 draft we got Hickey and Wright. A bit early to tell on them and far to early on the rest that we got. In 2009 Port got Schultz, Buthcer and Pittard. In 2013 we may have got their 2006 players in Billings, Acres and Dunstan. I reckon that puts us a couple of years behind them. Also we lost dal and BJ in that time and uim unsure Port lost champions in the last couple of years. We will at about the time our younger potential stars get to over 50 games.

You cannot underestimate the importance that Koch is to their improvement. A president with strength and vision who has helped straighten the ship. With him and Hinnkley thet are steets ahead of St Kilda, never mind the players.

They have created a vision and culture and got buy in from the players, they have recruited much like Swans in getting bit players from other teams and turning them into very good players. Polec this year is unbelievable, no one had heard of him before and now he is nearly AA!
