Really bad expressions and cliches used by commentators

Post: # 1461368Post Sainternist »

Whenever there's a pack of players, almost in scrum formation, the play is too congested and the umpire calls for another ball up, it's inevitable whoever is calling the game will say "reckon you could throw a blanket over fifteen or twenty players". For some reason that cliche always annoys me. Perhaps it provokes some unsavory imagery.

GET RID OF IT!!

Other dishonorable mentions: Bruce McAvaney's "Lucy" and when KB used to say "he does the hippy-hippy shake..."

Bruce is a legend commentator but lately he seems to be over using the gutteral sounding risers at times in a game that just don't warrant it and making sound fake.

Would be awesome if we could have the tv without the commentators but still get all the other sound like the crowd and stuff.

I hate it when commentators refer to players as a "Former Brownlow Medallist". They will always be a Brownlow Medallist, they are just not the "reigning" medallist.

Perhaps Jobe might fit this description in the future though. Lovely.

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

They also offer it on MLB TV, although I find the quality of sportscasting for baseball to be second to none.

Love the idea of being able to watch AFL matches on television without the blithering idiots shouting and howling like dogs on heat over the top of the sounds and ambiance of the game.

I hate the term "shot on goal". I always thought you had a shot at goal.

As for the commentators, some of the European match streams have their own commentary, it's particularly amusing watching the game when it's being called in French or Russian, and far less annoying than hearing BT.

And there's one particular stream where just one guy calls the whole game himself (in English), without any nonsense. He's actually pretty good, especially as he leaves out the cliches.

I am also not sure where "the fat side" of the ground is, is that where they sell the pies?

And since when did Aussie Rules have quarterbacks playing?

Commetti hardly ever uses it anymore. It became such a cliche years ago, I noticed he deliberately refrained from saying it. You never hear him say "like a cork in the ocean" these days either. He's probably the only refined caller left for television.

Mike Williamson and Peter Landy were also a great commentators for television. A shame they (evidently) haven't been used as role models by today's generation. The Rex Hunt-style of delivery needs to be weeded out altogether.

Peter Landy was a great commentator back in the day. I liked Sandy Roberts and Ian Robertosn wasn't bad either.

Bruce used to be the best (I share a birthday with him ironically. And Meryl Streep but that's another kettle of fish...).

His call of Plugger's second qtr of the 1991 EF is pretty legendary: 'It's a celebration. Locketts playing SUPERBLY'.

I think when he stared calling with Dennis is when the rot set in. Maybe they both felt they had to outdo each other?

It shows you just how bad the overall commentary is when Dennis and Bruce become tiresome.

Looking forward to the immortal Martin Tyler in Brazil.

Bruce just doesn't shut up he drive me nuts. I worked out if you have the volume low enough the brain gives up on trying to hear what the commentators are saying however you still absorb crowd sounds.

Tyler is a superb sportcaster. He's up there with the Vin Scullys and Marv Alberts of vinatge sports commentary still around today.

Recently the TV commentators were talking about kicking the ball into "Touch".

They also say that the boundary rider is on the "Side Lines".

When our footballers are on the ground fighting for the ball it looks nothing like a "Scrum".

These are all Rugby, and Rugby League terms that do not apply to our game.

In a scrum they are standing with a bent back and their nose appears to be stuck in the backside of the person in front of them, then a player will feed the ball into the scrum.
Many League experts have wanted to get rid of the scrum for many years as it is nearly always won by the team that feeds the ball. Making it pointless.

At least they have stopped using the American Football term of "Quarterback".

But they do use the Baseball term "Stepping up to the plate".

Last time I looked the only plate in our game was years ago when they put plates in the centre of the ground to help the Umpires bounce the ball.
That did not last.

I agree. Too many analogies with other sports. You'll rarely hear commentators for other sports making those sorts of comparisons. Perhaps they do it to try and make sense of it for international audiences. But if they're smart enough, audiences unfamiliar with the game can figure it out for themselves.

"Stepping up to the plate" is a silly one. You sometimes hear other baseball terms like "pinch hitter", which is just stoopid!
