with Dempster i do think the cattle around him is effecting his game , as you rightly point out he is perhaps spreading himself too thin as he is needed kinda everywhere and i think thats where Gwilt being so much out of form is really hurting us

At the game last night I noticed he was coming off the bench exhausted and when you see the amount of ground he covers it is understandable. It did look like Thomas was tagging him and at some stages in the 2nd half looked like he was trying to go to Menzel but had to 'fight' his way thru Thomas. Not much assistance from the other backmen in giving him a chop out probably due to their inexperience. I would say he is trying to cover holes as well as look after his player but the ball has been coming into the back half so easily especially the last two weeks due to little pressure from further up the field that I would hate to be one of our backmen.

Dempster - is captaining the backline at the moment, kept Daisy to not many possessions. Yes makes mistakes sometimes but given the amount of times the ball comes his way, that has to be expected occasionally

Schneider - There is one thing he has in spades and that is class and we need it. He reads the game just about better than any other saint, he gets himself in the right spot. He is having to play through the midfield too much for my liking, would prefer him playing as a permanent forward, but I guess it is all hands to the pump.

Anyone calling for Dempster to be dropped or carrying on about Gwilt needs to get a broader perspective on football and break the habit on nkeejerk reactions.

For a little perspective, our starting back six against Carlton had a combined games tally of 356, for an average of 59.3 games played per player. Dempster and Gwilt make up 285 of those 356 games, meaning the other four backmen had a combined total of 71 games played for an average of 17.7 games played per player.

For a little further perspective, Dustin Fletcher has played 385 games. By himnself he has played more games than the combined total of our entire back starting six Monday night !! Think about the fact that two thirds of our defence had a combined total of just over three seasons worth of games !!


If you want to see us get the mother of all poundings every single week, please rid our team of any and all experience and throw the kids to the wolves.

Jimmy may have slowed post knee injury, Sean may have had a poor game (debatable), but they stay until we can get Fisher or Gilbo back in. Even if we can get Roberton fit and firing, at least he''s got about 40 games to his name.....

And any calls for our only functioning forward to be sent to the back line should be met with an offer of a phone number for a good drug rehab clininc.

He is low in turnover and clanger stats generally compared to some of his more highly fancied teammates. I thought Jimmy Webster and Acres made heaps more obvious mistakes under pressure than the old guys. They are not going to find it easier with out them along side. Throwing kids to the wolves doesn't make for better players. Dempster has had a great year again under more pressure than most backmen of his size. Delaney will take a gorilla out of the equation but the bulk of the general play is left to Dempster, Gwilt and Webster.

Injury list isn't helping us in any way. However we can't keep carrying crap players like Jones and Sipposs and expect to improve enough to avoid the Richmond/Carlton curse.

Milera and Weller are VFL standard. Bruce, Shenton and Longer are young guys playing because of injury to first choice players but clearly aren't up to it right now. Now is the time for the Pelican to show us his much vaunted recruiting nouse. Big clean up in the off season is desperately needed.
