Been saying it for a while, we cant rely on him.. He isint good at all, doesn't apply himself and his game sense is disgusting.. Great athlete but footballer at AFL level.. Nope...

We need to adjust his scores for the handicap of the poor kicking inside 50.
Not sure if the instructions were 'just bang it on your boot' but all night we 'just banged it on the boot'.
Not many lace out.

Rhys is as soft as ice cream. I'm losing patience in him.Enrico_Misso wrote:All of the above.

Do they not coach him on this?
Or is he stupid?

Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
I want to compare him with Kosi for a minute
Both fwd/Ruckmen
Kosi was a natural footballer but post injury had no athletic ability
Rhys is an unnatural footballer who has some athletic ability
Kosi hit packs with no fear and protection of himself and often crashed into who ever... Picking up speed on impact
Rhys protects himself in a contest, slows down on impact and braces for the collision.
How often have we seen Rhys get smashed in a pack, or smash into someone else leaving people on the deck?!

Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
I have no problem with Rhys .
Click on this comparison
http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_p ... 1=C&fid2=C
He compares very closely with Zac Clarke.
Same age
Clarke was pick 58 and Rhys 47 in the draft
Similar games
Similar size
Similar goals
Similar disposals
Clarke ahead on Hitouts
So im not sure what the problem is?
Do people really truly think Rhys should be measured as a key forward? I mean really? Based on what?

Agree with the sentiments presented here. He doesn't run to provide an option in the forward line, seems to stand where he thinks he is least likely to make a mistake which in turn means that he is too far from the pill and seems to spend large portions of games as a tall witches hat. On top of this he simply isn't damaging enough. Kicks a goal every three games or so, and quite often coughs the ball up in general field kicking.
Your friendly neighbourhood samurai.

Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
Nearly 24 and getting close to 50 games- he should be showing more improvement. Has been rucking better, when asked to do so.
Our exceedingly poor delivery into the forward line has not been helping him - might be a star with Hawthorn type delivery! Also the "go to" situation with Rooey, has limited his opportunities.
Under a new Coach, let's see how he finishes off the year. There is potential there, and we aren't looking at finals.

Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
Bottom line is he's a mediocre footballer at AFL level. If you're 24, played close to 50 games and have yet to really turn some heads, it's pretty bloody unlikely you're going to improve much more.
For once I'm agreeing with Citywest. We are talking about the future of building a strong forward line in this team. Rhys is just not the man to follow in Roo's footsteps. Reckon it might be time for Rhys by the season's conclusion. Shucks, I'd pretty much had enough of him after last year.
BM's comparison to Kosi is interesting. A shame he has barely half the ticker big Kosi had.
Plenty of other big fish in the sea to sought after.

Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
Whoever wants him as Roo replacement Key fwd are living in a fantasy land.
Whats wrong with Rhys as a 2nd banana ruck and 3rd fwd?
Plenty of guys have careers doing that.
e.g
Zac Clarke
Shaun Hampson
Max Bailey
Tom Bellchambers
Jonathan Giles
This is the company I see Rhys in - he might play his 100 odd AFL games and kick his 100 odd career goals. Nothing wrong with that. We all need to lower our expectations to something realistic for him. Not everyone on the list is going to be a star. Not many Roos out there.

We were playing more constructive footy when they didn't have the option of sending it to Rooey. He is still an inexperienced player.
But Rhys is playing as our #2 forward. His job is to kick goals yet he's only kicked 5 this year, an average of 0.6 per game. Leigh Montagna & Jack Billings have kicked more & Luke Dunstan the same!

Correct, he's not a forward and never will be. Some players have a knack for kicking goals. Rhys isn't one of them.stkildathunda wrote:But Rhys is playing as our #2 forward. Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
I've been honest before, and it hasn't been taken too kindly.
Rhys isn't a forward, if anything, he is a ruck that rests forward at times.
I believe he is naturally docile, and needs the ruck to liven him up.
That being said, would he be worth anything trade week that it would be worth putting him up?

Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
I think he's worth more to us (at the moment) than what he would attract in a trade - probably an early 3rd round pick.
He was definitely disappointing on Monday, but he's still playing better football overall than any of his earlier years. I think he suffers from not wanting to get in Riewoldt's way…
Until we have a better option for a ruck/fwd we'd be mad to trade him, unless someone paid overs.

Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
My original post was not necessarily putting Rhys down but more so to point out that we are desperate for an elite tall forward. I heard on Hungry for sport Mick Turner talking today about all the talls in this years draft. He mentioned Hugh Goddard again. He said that he is a definite top 5 pick. I haven't seen him play but I'm thinking that we have to grab him with our first pick because once Roo retires who is going to take his spot???

Didnt Shaun Hampson get traded for pick 28?
I see Rhys about that mark. But Id keep Rhys as a 2nd ruck/3rd fwd at this stage but anything better than a pick 28 then Id trade.

It was seen by most as overs. It will depend on the level of need of the other party. Off the top, I can't think of any team that desperately would need Stanley.Con Gorozidis wrote:Didnt Shaun Hampson get traded for pick 28?

Not necessarily, I'm sure Billings doesn't want to get in (a giant of the game) Riewoldt's way either.Sainternist wrote:That's a kind way of saying that he has very little fire in the belly.dragit wrote:I think he suffers from not wanting to get in Riewoldt's way…
Some guys don't have the anger gene, but they can still make good footballers - like Sean Dempster.
Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
So we've gone from someone who got in Roos way, to someone that won't get in Roos way?
Maybe nobody will particularly thrive alongside Roo.
Would like to see Lee get a run at it, if that's to be at the expense of Stanley, oh well...he can fight to get back in.

Rhys has had pretty good form this year and Monday was his poorest game. We have no other alternative for 2nd ruck and Lee hasn't performed with Sandy
One year will be our year

Lee can play second ruck so when he shows some form for Sandy I'd expect him to replace Stanley. He has better credentials as a forwardlongtimesaint wrote:We have no other alternative for 2nd ruck and Lee hasn't performed with Sandy

Re: Lets be honest, Rhys Stanley is just an athlete
Dempster has fire in the belly. He just doesn't show it because he has nerves of steel. Nothing to do with having any "anger gene". If you're saying Rhys lacks aggression, then that doesn't bode well for an AFL footballer, does it?dragit wrote:Not necessarily, I'm sure Billings doesn't want to get in (a giant of the game) Riewoldt's way either.Sainternist wrote:That's a kind way of saying that he has very little fire in the belly.dragit wrote:I think he suffers from not wanting to get in Riewoldt's way…
