How is Spencer going?

Hi Sainters,
Was hoping to catch a glimpse of Spencer White on the weekend but didn't get the chance.
Did he play for Sandi? How's he going?
There's been a lot of talk about his potential but I was wondering how those who've actually seen him play think he's going.

Some really are supremely disappointed and reckon he won't make it.

Some are patient and realise he's young and developing without yet having a full pre season.

Everyone agrees he hasn't yet shown much out on the field.

I didn't catch a glimpse of him either. And I watched the entire game.

Too early to call, however signs so far do not look good.

Potentially lacking work rate.

If it's work rate that's missing, at least it can be rectified with a change in attitude, or further development. I think he might be a bit of a "late bloomer." From what I've seen of him, I believe the club should persevere. He might just take a year or two longer than expected. IMHO.

History suggests that cases are extraordinarily rare that players that can't get a kick at VFL level,ever make it at AFL level,let alone make it bigtime.

Any dreams of him being this buddy like forward are fanciful. You need to be making more of an impact than 1-2 highlights a year. Average to poor AFL players dominate at VFL level

On Saturday he had seemed to follow up almost everything good he did with something poor. The raw ability is certainly there, but it would appear that the mental and physical application are a long way off.

Probably has good talent, but when he's is in the Sandy seniors he needs to emulate Sam Dunnel's workrate

It's a bit of workrate, intensity but also a preseason behind him that are all needed.
But I do honestly think he will play better in a better team. Work in progress, similar to webster was last year.

Not going to say he won't make it yet but agree with johng that he is lazy and his attitude seems poor. Went to Bendigo last year to watch him against mediocre opposition and he hardly touched it when we won by 12+ goals. Looked like he wanted to be somewhere else with is mates to me. No doubt he has the ability and pace to be a very good AFL player but to me he doesn't look like he wants to be out there.

From what I could tell from watching it on TV I would agree that he appeared to lack some intensity.

But I just don’t understand this stuff.

If Spencer, or anyone else for that matter, doesn’t want to be there then surely that’s obvious to all at the club. Surely the player is challenged by the coaches, if not his team mates. What does the player say? Does he say “I really do want to play AFL” only to continue to act as though it’s the opposite on game day? Only a total moron would think that a club would continue to keep them on their list and pay them a good wage if they were clearly not committed to pursuing a career at the top level. Now not all players are smart, however the vast majority of them are not morons.

So if Spencer, or anyone else for that matter, would rather be somewhere else then they’d be better off fessing up now (like Steven Gaertner did) and getting on with the rest of their life, as the football side is going to end pretty quickly if there’s no effort shown.

I for one hope this is not the case and that both St Kilda and Spencer are working hard behind the scenes to put into place plans that will see him have every opportunity to be as good a player as he possibly can be.

See this is what I don't understand.

All a player had to do is not play well and it's comments galore: it's gone to his head, isn't interested, doesn't want it, needs the penny to drop, got ahead of himself.

What's wrong with a lot of people on here just saying they don't think he is good enough? Scared?

There doesn't have to be a made up narrative being the reason a player doesn't make it. Some work their butts off just aren't good enough - unless you have something tangible to explain any of those cliches, and sometimes ppl do, let's give them a rest.

Is he contracted for next year, and if not do you guys reckon his is worth a 1 year contract? I understand it is early
in the season and I would want to see what he does at Sandy over the next 3 months.

I"m unsure on how good he really is have seen him in a few games and he has not impressed me at all,the one Buddy like goal hasn't helped him and the fact he hasn't done a pre season also isn't great but he will definately have to lift his game in the latter half of the year!

I would give him a contract for next year - 2015 is his make or break.
