Jason Holmes
I know that Jason has a long way to go and while he only had 5 disposals on Sunday, he apparently beat Bellchambers in the tap work.
According to Paul Hudson:
Holmesy was tremendous in the middle. We felt he beat Bellchambers as far as tap-work goes, which was fantastic. The amount of times that he knocked it down the throat of Ross, Cockie and Murdoch was excellent and it gave us first use.
When you are anticipating and reading a dominating ruckman, it gives you such an advantage to move the ball forward and Holmesy was excellent in this regard. He’s still learning but every week he’s improving.
Great effort Jason.
I love this photo as well.

Re: Jason Holmes
I've been very impressed by him .
His only problem is currently he is kicking the ball at a under 13s level .
If he can improve this in the next year , he could be a very good player .

Re: Jason Holmes
Pretty exciting to see the big guy developing so well...I can't help but think about how bad mike pike was at kicking and collecting possessions around the ground when he started playing at the AFL level, he used to look so lost ...the swans persevered and got real reward (I know Pike came from a rugby union background, he was a fullback and so kicking and judging the ball in flight for taking kicks was not foreign to him)...but the swans have to be applauded for giving him AFL matches to adjust and improve...I don't think Homes should play AFL this year, but if he can stay injury free and play a full season in the VFL, then another presason and a better grasp of the game, he could have great upside over the next 3-8 years (Big If still at this stage)...what it takes is guts from the coaches to play him, the swans have to applauded for their guts in playing Pyke when he sucked for so many AFL games before starting to blossom!! Good luck Jason Holmes!!

Re: Jason Holmes
Looks like Lewie Pierce is going to have trouble getting a run in the ruck anywhere! An embarrassment of mediocre riches at present.

Re: Jason Holmes
That is an awesome leap. Basketball players seem to adapt pretty well to our game. Won't be writing him off in having a future in footy.

Re: Jason Holmes
He has only played a handful of career footy games, let alone in his life. He has to start somewhere. Winning tap outs against an experienced ruckman is a worthy start. The question is: how much more will he progress? Time will tell.BigMart wrote:Taps

Just not that important?

Re: Jason Holmes
I do agree
He is actually making some real progress...
In 3 years he might be a player

Re: Jason Holmes
Hope so BM.
The odds would have to be against him but it would be a nice story.
Anyone know if he's doing better than Mike Pyke at similar stage?

Re: Jason Holmes
Certainly well worth sticking with, now if he can start to get himself into positions to take a few marks, he'll be well on the way. He needs to read the play a bit better, but that will come in time.
I didn't think much of his chances when he first signed up but now have him down as a hopeful and improving player. Good on him if he makes it

I spoke to him at the junction oval training and was impressed with his attitude. He seems very professional and driven. I believe he will give this opportunity everything he can.

5 possessions in his last game. Needs to be around 10 at least VFL level as it will drop at AFL level.

Re: Jason Holmes
Right, channelling my inner Con and going early, very early...
Getting worried about the big guy.
Rucks very well, and also gets many of those taps to advantage.
That is all.
And that's the problem!
Apart from contesting the ball ups, Jason is a total spectator. He just stands there watching. And whilst very athletic, he is however very slow across the ground. I'd even be backing the Owl in a foot race against Jason. (Yes, I know... )
Now I totally realise that he needs time to try and work out how to read the play, but even though it's only been a few games, he just seems to have no idea.
My suggestion is to tell him to just get to as many contests as he can, and try and get his hands on the footy. And around the ground he needs to present himself as often as possible. Initially, I'd be concentrating not primarily on how many kicks n' handballs Jason can get, but simply (literally) how many touches of the footy.
Doesn't matter if he stuffs up any disposal he does earn. Just gotta get him into the play, and get him the feel of the footy in his hands.
If needed I'd even play him for periods at full forward or centre half forward, and just tell him to keep presenting, and then keep presenting some more... regardless of the outcome.
We simply have to get the ball into his hands IMHO if he's to get a feel for more than contesting tap outs.
Thoughts Saintsationalists?

Isn't he a black American new to our game? Like a Savage. Good for PR and not much else

Re: Jason Holmes
Way too early
He is a 20-1 shot
And it will be 3 years before we get the answer to the question ...... Can he make it?

Re: Jason Holmes
I just don't think it matters yet. He needs to work out rucking first and gradually get more of an appreciation for the rest of the game. Realistically he'll be playing VFL seconds for the rest of the year, once one of Hickey and Pierce return. Probably the same goes for the next couple of years. So he'll be competing with fewer Russ Gabriels and more limited battlers - just like him.Dave McNamara wrote:We simply have to get the ball into his hands IMHO if he's to get a feel for more than contesting tap outs.
I haven't given up on him by any stretch, he's only played a handful of footy games. But there's just no hurry at this point.
Re: Jason Holmes
Agree that he needs much more time learning the game but it is far from implausible that Longer might cop a niggle or an injury and he will be the last ruckman standing on our list.
