Speaking of the draft - Sandy getting cut up by Marcus Bontempelli at the moment. Already has 2 goals against us in the first 8 minutes.
Foostcray 24 - Sandy 1.
See @TrueZebras for reports
Seems like the 2013 was an absolute super draft for midfielders - anyone in the top 25 could be a gun. Bit of a raffle.

When we were about half way through last season I thought we should go after him but he was a risk at pick 3. He's an odd size and still growing. Being Dal's cousin is romantic but those guys who don't conform to a regular type can be hard to use well. Could be a Kruezer or Josh Frazer or could be an over sized Josh Kennedy tall mid. If he fills out he could be an undersized utility forward. I probably think Kade Kolodnashnij suffered from the same thing both are obscenely talented but might be harder to use than the other top 10 picks

So it wouldn't be romantic taking Plugger's cousin or nephew because he left?

Re: Jack and Billy (Hartung, that is)
Dal is still playing for North.
Hate to say this but,
I reckon Tony would have preferred his time in Sydney
He was there 5 years compared to 13 at StK and supports both equally.
Upon retirement most players loyalty is to their last club, over time it reverts to the club the either spent the most time at or enjoyed the most.
Sadly.... Whilst great saints
Ball, Dal and BJ
Will be remembered as Coll, Nth and Ess players
All will play at least 6 years at their new clubs

They will all be remembered as both. Schnides and Dempster were hardly stars at Sydney but both are acknowledged as ex Swans. Dal, Goddard and BJ will always be ex Saints.

Re: Jack and Billy (Hartung, that is)
i wanted us to punt on hartung instead of acres. now that i've seen a bit of both players and read peoples opinion on acres, i'm glad we didnt pick hartung
hartung is playing in a top 4 side right now, with ample in and under midfielders who win their own ball. he has players around him who can apply defencive pressure. at the moment he is being put on the park and is not really expected to apply defencive pressure or win his own ball. he is being brought into the game by those around him. it works because hawthorn can cover him. if people think hawthorn will carry him like this during the tail end of the season/finals they are kidding them selves. his biggest weaknesses which put serious question marks over him ever being an AFL footballer are still there.
now compare him to acres, dunstan and billings. these guys are in a poor side. they are expected to play a role and carry much more responsibility than hartung. chuck any of those guys in the hawthorn side and i expect they would have much more impact than hartung
same goes for some of the other draftess in other bottom 4 sides

Re: Jack and Billy (Hartung, that is)
Defacto
Are you sure you know Billy that well?...
He is a ball winning machine.... His style is a run and carry but he still wins the footy...
He is a similare style (obviously not comparible) to B. Harvey, Joey, Crawford and Cousins) a hard running rover
Due to his elite endurance... His defensive running is first class

Unless he'd come to -then he would have been a cheap outside runner with no accountability. I'm pretty happy with Acres. I think Acres could be a bit more of a BJ type. FA should allow for the trade of good mids regularly. Guys with a bit more x factor will be the keepers.
Re: Jack and Billy (Hartung, that is)
I am happy with Acres too?!
Does that mean Hartung is no good?
Does hoping Hartung is hopeless make you feel better, so we have not made another recruiting mistake?!
I reckon both will be very good players
Billy is more of a sure thing to be an AFL player... Blake had significant upside and could potentially be a star

Re: Jack and Billy (Hartung, that is)
At the moment all of them have potential and nothing more, any of them could win B&F's or end up playing 50 games because of injury.
How can things be any different now to drafting day?
We might have a better idea at the end of next year.
Go too early you end up thinking Rhys Palmer is the next gun and Gary Ablett is an average forward

Re: Jack and Billy (Hartung, that is)
I love this whole situation due to a couple things. One being we were red hot on Hartung and likely would have taken him at 19 if not for Acres being available.
Two, the fact that Hartung was taken with a pick that was originally ours.
Will enjoy watching all three of Dunstan, Acres and Hartung over the next decade to see who comes out on top

We can do the hand-wringing thing in 10years time!
You know the one similar to how many flags we would have with Judd instead of Ball.
Happy with how our high picks have started off and fingers crossed they stay sound and continue to improve.

I think he will be a good player, I was being a smart arse because you tend to be quite negative about any player we draft while talking up other teams brilliant drafting. I think Hartung will be a decent player. We would have taken him if Acres wasn't there he'd been around our club getting used to the place. I think we rated him. I'm just saying Acres was probably worth more to us as he's a bit of a rarer type. Good mids are a dime a dozen but guys who have elite skills and can control possession are a much rarer proposition. Acres could potentially be a Fyfe type mid or a rebounding defender. Either way Billy looks like he's very good just I would have done the same as our recruiters. Dunstan I was starting to think might only be a solid type but has exceeded my expectation. i would have taken Crouch. I was a talking up Billings as our first pick so I have pretty much got what I wanted any way so generally very happy with what we got from the 2013 draft. looking back over my shoulder at the almosts doesn't hold any thrill for me
Re: Jack and Billy (Hartung, that is)
I am negative about crap players we draft
They have included
Cripps, Crocker, Polo, Pattison, Lovett, Sweeney, Howard
Proved very wrong by
X.Clarke (yes harsh), Maguire, Montagna (wow)
Was happy with
Eddy, Geary, Newnes, Markworth, Siposs, Pierce, McQualter, Eddy, Allen, Steven, Stanley, Ball, R. Clarke
Reasonably happy with, but preferred not
Armitage, Lynch, Ross
Disappointed we didn't draft (ATT)
Carrazzo, Adam Fisher, Roury Kirkby, Daniel Connors, Brett Robison, Heath Grundy, Tom Swift, Paul Johnson, Jackson Trengrove, Jack Riewoldt, Jack Darling! Sam Kerridge, Todd Elton
Some absolute rippers there I know...
Many I forgotten about... When I was right into it (the draft) 1997-2009 I used to note down who I wanted (from fairly limited knowledge, but a bit of research) ... I should find the notes and reveal who I wanted and allow you guys to get stuck in.
I think I faired a little worse than the reality... Which doesn't say much for the actual recruiters IMO.
