If we play 2 games per year in NZ from 2015.....

If we play 2 games per year in NZ from 2015.....
.....1 game in Wellington and 1 game in Christchurch
I believe.....
1) St Kilda will have 10,000 based kiwi members signed up by 2025.
2) Flow on effect to our Australian based kiwi members which could add another 5,000 members to our base.
What are your thoughts?

Got to hand it to you for persistence.
I dunno about Christchurch. Real rugger strong hold. Its the Crusaders down there isnt? Population is 360,000 - so bigger than Hobart.
I just think two games per year over there is one too many. It has to be novelty factor.
Nice place for a skiing holiday though.

One game a year ideally in ANZAC day and that is it. Hopefully with rotating opponents. GWS would be nice next year.
Cannot see us having substantial membership there BUT can see Kiwis who come to live here adopting us as their team.
I can also see some NZ companies looking to Australian markets getting involved with us financially.

I think it should be 2 games for 2 reasons. The first being that a 1 game membership really doesn't make sense. You would think that to generate interest in NZ and to legitimise it so to speak it has to be 2 games. And secondly, it takes away another game from Etihad that would see us lose money and instead, make a profit.

Yeah but its not a real profit . It is an AFL subsidised one.citywest wrote:I think it should be 2 games for 2 reasons. The first being that a 1 game membership really doesn't make sense. Nice to get a big sponsor over there though. Thats a fair call. Fonterra baby formula or something.
If the sponsorship deal came first and they said theyd put in some big coin if we played two games - then id consider two games but i see it as unlikely.
I like the ANZAC Day annual event.

I heard Kent Johns (a NZ radio host) on Harford's program on SEN state that the only ground capable of playing AfL footy in NZ is in Wellington.
All other grounds are either rectangular or too small.

I love the symbolism of an ANZAC day game in NZ and would be happy with a second game over there if it helps sure the club up financially. However I think the prospect of 10,000 members in NZ is a bit fanciful, even if we can sign up a few ex-pat Aussies over there. That said, there's nothing wrong with setting an ambitious goal and throwing everything into achieving it. I just hope we don't throw good money after bad trying to build a supporter base in NZ.

I heard Richo on the tele during the week talking about the NZ game. I forget which program I was watching but he said from a financial perspective and even with the relatively low attendance numbers at this seasons Wellington game, Saints got more money out of this one game than they will get from all Etihad games combined for the season. Pretty sad

Good question. Maybe email the club and ask them. I'd guess 2,000 max.citywest wrote:Does anyone know how many NZ members we now have?

If you can't work it out... Don't worth about it

If we did play a second game there then surely Auckland would be the place.
Go where the people are.
Though if the NZ govt are forking out the cash they might want to see Footy-tourism directed to help revitalise Christchurch esp. if it was played after May to coincide with the ski season.

+1 although I am not sure if there would be a ground suitable. I could be wrong but I think there are more people living in and around Auckland than there are in Wellington.Enrico_Misso wrote:If we did play a second game there then surely Auckland would be the place.

What good are members if they are paying bugger all to be one anyway. Losing two games to n.z might get you a few members over there but it eventually becomes less appealing to home supporters .
One game for Anzac Day fair enough but no more.
It's funny how n.z don't care if any locals go to the game - they just want the tourism.
And the afl don't really care about the tourism - they want to promote the game.
I wonder who pays more of the $500,000. ? Wellington council or the afl ?
