No
It's an opinion on their output as a professional footballer..... It's not personal
In fact Jim is a terrific bloke
And has been a good player.... But he is not playing well enough to justify a spot

Re: Gwilt
Has been poor for a long time
How ppl can justify his position in the team is beyond me
It's 2014, he had a good season in 2010... An ok one in 2011 but was starting to be found out
Has been average for most of his career. Is a liability now and his presence is detrimental to the up and comers

This forum isn't meant to be a love feast. It's a discussion based on opinion, so if you can't handle what is being written then counter it with a good argument not with a childish remark of following another club. It's weak to question the commitment of ones following of the club just because they criticised a player.

Gwilt has given stacks to the club. He remains a gutsy player for us down back, especially during these lean times.
Remember how you all used to bag Blake?
P.O. to Richmond, you'll be happier there.

I really like CJ and Beau Maister. I think they're fantastic role-models, they work their butts off and on the field they are the kings of 1%s. Two of the best clubmen we have
Both are unfortunetly average players and pbly shouldn't be playing

Re: Gwilt
Jim is a player past his best. WE are struggling at the moment for balance between mature bodies that can cope with the rigours of an AFL season, and the need to develop the younger players without putting them to the sword. Jim gets caught up in this conflict. His relative lack of height (188cm) means he is not a key defender. He is however a seasoned body (with a LOT of muscle hung on it) that can cope with the hits in the backline, and when fit he has a booming kick. His problem is that he was never quick or agile, and now has slowed down post knee injury.
His service to our club should not be denigrated, but the question is whether his presence is now detrimental to our development as opposed to him offering something a youngster is not yet capable of. I would prefer to get games into Bruce. But I like that Jim is there to give Bruce's body a rest after 8 weeks or 10 weeks to avoid the same sort of issues we saw with a young Kosi......

Re: Gwilt
For years we've asked too much of him. He's not a tall defender at AFL level, simple as that.
That said, he's obviously given his all, even though we've put him in a no-win situation. Have to admire him for that. He's done what the team needs to the best of his ability week in, week out.
But the fact remains that he's not good enough in the role we're asking him to play. We don't have a lot of other options so he'll keep getting a run. But we won't be competitive until he's no longer playing full-back on guys fifteen centimetres taller than him.

Re: Gwilt
I understand we need some mature bodies in the side and Jim has been a great servant and played some good games this year.
But I don't understand why we have to play the older fringe players week in week out automatically and mindlessly. Just smacks of laziness to me and looks like coaching staff have no plan.
Surely we can find a compromise where we have a certain number of mature players each week and a certain number of kids.
I dont get why we automatically select Gwilt & Jones every single week.
What if they just play 12 sr games a year? Leaves a balance of hard bodies and getting games/opportunities into younger guys and also reward some VFL form.
Its not like the senior side is rock solid and competing every week and picking itself. So far we have lost to the bottom side. Been pumped by 85points by a bottom 10 side and been pumped by 140 points by the top side.

Re: Gwilt
Can we all agree that it is time for him to hang up his boots now?
Seriously, who is he supposed to play on?
His opponent cannot be any of tall, fast, agile or highly skilled. Players regularly
have breakout games against him. It's not his fault, time has caught up to him.

Re: Gwilt
Defenders often get unfairly singled out when the team heads south. Zac copped it as our team defence dropped away. Gwilt is often the gut along with Dempster that runs across the front of play to mark, we often then turn it over leaving those guys off their man. We are letting the ball come in too quickly and easily which doesn't help our backs. I think we are missing backline run with out Gears, Gilbert, Wright etc. We need Shents to come good quick.

I don't think anyone is saying that Gwilt should not play again. I'd be happy to see him force his way back into the team. But why does he get gifted games?

Re: Gwilt
Hasn't been the same player since his injury in 2011. Doesn't really have it anymore. May as well play out the season the best he can and bow out with dignity.

maybe we should trade him
Your only as good as the other players out there.
It's a team effort, not an individual effort.
The balls one in the middle, and if you can't put pressure on the mids or get on top. Then it's going to be hard to defend.
He is an excellent kick of the footy.
I think he should be used in a way that should be instructed to him to kick long passes 50m +
