Re: Saints v Hawks match day thread
Nothing wrong with having a wry chuckle. Took me back to those 'good' old days as well.
Just one of those games, probably come out firing next week.
If I was a coach or player I'd be concerned, but I'm not.
Onwards and upwards.

No probs. Enjoy. The Fireman wrote:no...our effort and composure is comical...reminds me of the good old days.8856brother wrote:Whats funny about losing by 150? Been there and done this so many times over the last 40 years so now I just have a chuckle to myself...it's better than the alternative...so thanks for being glad that I'm amused.

I thought Stanley played quite well and presented well most of the day. Few players would honour his leads though.

Its much easier to be a good player when ur side is dominating like that. I could have got on the end of some ball for the hawks today.Jacks Back wrote:26 disposals and a goal. Not bad for a debut. Certainly better than any of our new players. Great recruiting saints.LTN16 wrote:Did Billy Hartung have 40 disposals and kick 5 goals did he? If I was just listening to the commentary and not watching the game aswell I would have thought he had the best debut ever!
Terrible commentary!!
But I will say one thing about Hartung. - he looks to have really built up his physique over summer. Why are the other clubs able to do this while some guys who have been at our club a few years still look untoned and have immature bodies (Dunell & Lee come to mind).

Today told us who is not needed anymore. Savage bye simpkin doubts on him. Jones last year time to play tdl and terry to work out if they stay on the list. Longer needs more time
Stanley happy he's coming along.
Thoughts on weller?

We need to give some opportunity to dunny, milera and markworth and maybe even shaggy. if that means cj and gwilt spend a month at sandy - so be it.

Re: Saints v Hawks match day thread
They are extremely good and we have weak links all over the place. We got pulverized in the middle all day. That didn't help. Longer has a mile to go.
There were some really woeful performances - Gwilt got better after he went off and wouldn't know what a shepherd looks like, Jones plays like a headless chook, Simpkin has aggression but no brains, Savage is just absolutely terrible.
There were also some good signs - I though Delaney was ok on Roughead. Billings looked great. Montagna really good again.

Stanley is one of few who can hold his head up high, and really nice to see some consistency from him.ShanghaiSaint wrote: Stanley happy he's coming along.

Weller is fast, but there was that point in I think the 2nd quarter when someone his own size (can't remember who) gave him the "don't argue" and he went flying. Big step up for him, I think. Still, like Acres, for a first game in an absolutely horrendous shellacking, did ok.

All I could think about on that way home was I am so bloody sick of "travelling at the back of the bus"
I'm sick of having to watch my club be the whipping boys for arrogant arses like Hawthorn Football Club.
I want to travel in the front of the bus, I want our club to have the mongrel to stomp them in the head and then walk up and sit at the front of the bus whilst they are other clubs get their comeuppance.
The one thing about watching Hawthorn today was that arrogance breeds arrogance and they just knew the opportunity existed for them to just crush us and they did.
What a meek and mild response and to those ladies in today's article in The Age about The Angels' work for the Saints and several said all they want to see another flag before they die, I do to, but it's not going to happen. I should have realised this observation the night of the 1997 Grand Final and I reflected upon life and knew I was never going to see them win another flag. If I had known then what I know now, it would have saved a whole heap of heartache.
Signed bewildered and worn out Saints supporter.

Not bitter...
Just don't enjoy being an embarrassment
Some don't mind it... Not me.

Re: Saints v Hawks match day thread
It takes me back to the days when the smug lions would thrash us and beat up on Rooey and our kids. We grew up and smashed them back. The system is made to fly and flop. Right now we aren't in a position to bully others but we will be back there.ozrulestrace wrote:BigMart wrote:Supporters who refer to 'the good old days'

When are Geelong going to flop
Sydney
Hawthorn
When are Richmond, Carlton, Melbourne going to fly....
I don't buy into that crap

Re: Saints v Hawks match day thread
Your point is reasonable. But Hawthorn finished bottom 3 in 04 and 05 - won a flag three years later. Sydney finished 12th in 09 - won a flag three years later. Even Geelong finished 10th in 06 before coming into their own.BigMart wrote:When are Geelong going to flop

It's not a question of if these teams will flop but when. Obviously it's not guaranteed to happen at any given time but it will happen.

Would've like to have seen how many of those 26 disposals he would have had if he was playing for us! And your rating him better then Dunstan?
Re: Saints v Hawks match day thread
Sorry if I have missed anything but how was wellers game viewed today guys
Re: Saints v Hawks match day thread
I think he had Burgoyne and so might have conceded 33 possessions and 2 goals. Not ideal. But that said the entire midfield was getting smashed so it's hard to blame him specifically. Didn't look completely out of place but hasn't guaranteed anything yet.luc1966 wrote:Sorry if I have missed anything but how was wellers game viewed today guys
Re: Saints v Hawks match day thread
Hartung will be a gun! Said it last year... After watching him at Dandy...
But that doesn't mean Acres and Dunstan and certainly Billings won't....in fact they all seem to have it...

Like the ones who wanted to hang on to BJ, Dal and Ben????...to hang on to "the good old days" rather than build for the future.BigMart wrote:Supporters who refer to 'the good old days'
Essentially we are like GWS and Suns in their early days now. We are going to be up and down...get slaughtered on occasion.
Does not mean that we have to be happy with games like the Hawks one. But games like that are going to be part of our "growing pain"
We need to understand and accept that we had about 5 years of drafting kids very poorly. We have only been doing it right for 2 or 3 seasons now. It takes time to correct that much poor drafting.
Signs are good though.
No point bitching and moaning about the Cats. They did it really well. We did not.
BUT we are doing it really well now. But it takes time to rebuild.
