Hickey or McEvoy
I still think at the moment that Mac is the better all round football player, but I also think Hickey has more upside and getting better all the time.
So right now McEvoy

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
As a ruck man - Hickey for mine as he can at least get a hand to it
As a round the ground (ATM) big man - McEvoy
One of the more astute trades we have ever made. Ben's job first and foremost is to give mids first use - IMO he's deficient in this area and making up for it round the ground isn't enough. It wasn't also for Josh Fraser.

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
I just think they are too far apart in terms of experience to make a call at the moment.
Considering ruckmen take so long to flourish, we really need to see 70-100 games into hickey.
I just hope he is durable, seems easily injury prone at this stage, maybe this will iron out as fills out.
McEvoy seemed to stagnate last year, but could still improve considerably, he reads the game well, but appears slow and is out bodied in ruck duels still.

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
I'm happy with Hickey. I loved it when Ben took saving marks with those sticky fingers, and thought it was only a matter of time that he would develop his ruck work. Well the marks came less and less last year and the ruck work didn't improve. Thought it then and still think it now - was a great trade by the club. Very ballsy, but that's what you need to lift you off the bottom.
Re: Hickey or McEvoy
Long term Mac is B-/C+ and seems to have plateaued, whilst Hickey is still improving and has the potential to B+.
Whilst they each have differing strengths and weaknesses, overall there really isn't likely to be much difference in their level.
For mine though, whilst we picked Mac too early in his draft (within the next 14 players were Dangerfield, Rioli, Ebert, Taylor, Ward), we certainly got a good trade for him last year. Particularly good when we see how good Dunstan is.

thought the same, was impressed with his around the ground stuff and thought the rucking would come good, but was starting to lose faith last year then he was traded and I was like really???? bad move then saw what we got for him and thought yeah good trade

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
I think in RL's last season McEvoy improved to a point. He became okay in the ruck though occasionally monstered and decent around the ground occasionally dominating
As McEvoy physically matured, the logical line of thinking is that he would become stronger in the ruck and more consistently dominate around the ground as this was his strength.
It seems as though this didn't happen though. Big Mac seemed to plateau out
Hickey currently seems to be playing close to to almost a better standard.
If I was a betting man, (which I am), I put my money on Tom to be the better player over time even if he is behind at the moment

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
At this stage I would take McEvoy, but of course Hickey has more potential.
Big Mac used to take quite a few marks around the ground and kick some handy goals for us.

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
Hickey. Better ruckmen, younger, more upside, better at ground level and uses his body in congestion better. Bens biggest asset is his marking but has not become better since becoming number 1 ruck in 2011.

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
Hickey for me. McEvoy has a great tank, and is a good contested mark. That's it. Hickey is better at the primary role of a ruckman, rucking. This year will be the first time since a fit Gardner we've had a competative ruckman.

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
I always thought McEvoy was just a makeshift ruck and was too slow in general play, so Hickey is a much better option from what I am seeing, so good move by the club.

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
Hickey, without a doubt.
Much more agile and athletic for a bigman, a better tap ruckman already, and will develop into something special IMO.
There was an inconsequential passage of play in a game last year. Hickey had the ball and was about to handpass off, an oppostion player bumped Hickey's arm (the one holding the ball) in towards his torso without pinning it. Hickey simply went with the movement, passed the football around his back to his other hand and handpassed with the other hand. It was very similar to a basketballer passing the ball around his back.
It was quick, instinctive, and oozed grace and co-ordination. It caught my eye because it would be something you would expect from a player a foot shorter and much more highly rated. The kid can play.

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
Hickey for mine...
he really doesn't need to do a whole heap more to be a good Ruckman... (considering the way we are using him)
He Rucks 80% of the game, and only really has to take a few defensive grabs, or kick a goal or two and he would be a good ruck...
i guess to be great, he would need to develop so he can ruck less and be used in orther areas if we need him, and let another ruck come in and tap the ball...

Re: Hickey or McEvoy
I haven't rated Mac for a while. Got slammed on here for expressing those very views. Can't jump, slow as a wet week, moves like a statue etc. Hickey looks a natural ruck man. Can jump, agile, quick to cover ground. Main issue is overal fitness IMO. Needs a couple more preseasons. I'd take Hickey every day. And in two years the gap between the two will be like the Grand Canyon.

We could find out next week. Probably head to head. Hickey for me, even at this early stage.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!
