1997- it's an omen...we will make the grand final, Billy Longer and Steven will gang tackle Goldstein and pop his shoulder in the prelim.....

Well either that or Billings will be the new Montagna?

I still wonder if I jinxed us at year! We left Australia on the 9th of March (Plugger's birthday ironically) when the pre season cup was still on.

We came back to Oz after globe trotting on August 27th just in time for the final round which saw the Saints finish on top. We went to the QF at Waverley, then headed back to Cairns to prepare to move to Brisbane.

The most surreal year of my life - the greatest experience overseas and the Sainters making the GF. It still spins me out

I was at the prelim and nearly fainted I got so excited at winning. I got a free ticket to the Gf and thought it was a fairytale. I don't think I slept for two days before it. I had been given s*** all my life about having a crap footy club and that was the first time in my life the saints seemed like the best team in the league rather than home to a couple of stars. Surreal was the train ride home with the Crows supporters singing in my face and giving us s***....a high level of trauma was associated with that song for a long time. I thought I jinxed us...I didn't go to any of the GFs in 09 and 10 just in case.

"Then people aks me how I went, or how many kicks I got."
And Billing just laughs because the reality is he never got on the ground, sitting on the boundary bench in his dressing-gown for the entire match.
He didn't even do the obligatory boundary line warm-ups you see interchange players performing today, Billing just sitting there and wondering if his time would come.
His fellow reserve Payze got on in the last quarter to replace 17-year-old rover Allan Davis, Payze at least picking up a kick and a mark.
"At one stage during the last quarter our back pocket/ruckman Brian Sierakowski started to limp. I thought `stuff that', I'm not going to replace him.
"Our coach Allan Jeans didn't speak to me before or after the game but I don't blame him because the game was that close, he couldn't have made a change."
When the siren sounded with the Saints one point ahead, Billing remained in his dressing-gown and watched on as the players did their victory lap.
He hadn't done anything and as such didn't think he should be part of that traditional moment.
sad story

I went to both the prelims that year, the second one with my best mate who was a Doggies supporter. We were right behind Libba's goal which turned out to be a point, thought then that it was going to be the fairytale where we both went to our first GF and one of us walked away happy. Didn't happen. After the GF I was flying straight to Queensland for a family holiday, walking through an airport filled with ecstatic Crows supporters. No fun at all.

Ha ha I did too. A mate got freebies from work so we went even though neither followed the teams. I thought we would walk over the Crows. After Hall started kicking goals it looked sewn up. Then the post traumatic stress disorder allows me to forget the rest of the day. :)

Their tall fwds this week are:

Jenkins 198cm
Pods 193cm

Thats it. They are running a mosquito fwd line and without Walker (knee/hamstring) they look pretty ordinary.

If it were up to me Id bring in Bruce for Jenkins and let Delaney shut down the Pods.
But their fwd line doesn't look very scary and Newnes/Webster, Wright and Dempster should be able to shut down their mediums.

I also notice Kyle Hartigan is playing. Good effort from a bloke playing well in the VFL and then getting rookied. Probably a similar type/size/quality to Delaney.

Apparently T Lynch trained the house down. It's a matter of whether he's match ready.

People dont want Gwilt on talls but id rather him a tall like Pods or jenkins, probably pods than a smaller player. he is to slow for that role so i cant possibly see why Bruce would play this week if he didnt last week when they had about 4 talls.

Gwilt has so far been opposed to opposition players over 200cm each week... Will get Jenkins this week

Fitzpatrick.... Week 1 until he was knocked out

Isn't it a great sign of our improvement that even with Gilbo, Fisher and Schenieds all injured that neither TDL or Milera can't even make the 25.

Richo clearly has a no/few Whipping Boys policy.

1997 Grand Final vs CROWS

Post: # 1449025Post Megamaguire »

Gringo said refering 2 the '97 G.F.
"A mate got freebies from work so we went even though neither followed the teams. I thought we would walk over the Crows. After Hall started kicking goals it looked sewn up. Then the post traumatic stress disorder allows me to forget the rest of the day."

similar to myself, mum won 2 tickets to the G.F that year. I got one which put me 20 rows or so back from the fence and ended up sitting beside a Saints supporter who bought the other ticket a week before the game.
I still remember him saying to me at half-time 'relax we'll be right in the 2nd. half. I didn't believe it at all - just an intuition that it wasn't going to work out well. I certainly felt a bit cut and walked just before the final siren through a very quiet and haunting MCG carpark.

I liked our coach Stan Alves and had a few good highlights to remember like Aussie Jones' run down the wing and a young B.Hall slotting a nice goal. However the spectre of D. Jarman running amuck gave me a few nightmares though.
I just realised that it must have been the Crows first Grand Final win (under Blight). So in the last seconds of the Bulldogs clash there were 3 teams left ( St.K. W.B. Crows) vying for their 1st. Grand Final win.
Make it a win @ the Dome this Sunday Saints! :D

Very, very pleased his touted 'long absence' from season 2014 could end Sunday.

It was only last week that I caught myself actually forgetting that J. Steven played for St.Kilda. I gave myself a fair reprimand and only yesterday on one of my environmental driven serves i finished with the question when is Jack Steven expected back/ I assumed from last monthes media analysis somewhere around Rd. 12.
The answer yesterday came as a real bonus.

If he can just get through his first game and contribute handsomly like he usually does i'll be contented - anything beyond that and it'll be bonus time again!
Whether it is Sunday or the following week just happy Steven is in contention again.
Looking forward to Jack settling into this much improving team and bringing his after-burners to the mix.

I'm excited!
GOOD ON YA JACK !

You're absolutely right, that's another senior moment i've just experienced. Hope it's not too much of a pattern.
I think what i was trying to say was if the Bulldoga met the Saints in the Grand Final one team would be celebrating their 2nd. Grand Final win- I'm not even going to try to explain the scenario of all 3 waiting on their first!
As for the Crows they didn't have long to wait for their 2nd. !

Thanks Stinger, Good luck Sunday :D

Well firstly because Gilbo is injured. Secondly Bruce played a very good VFL game. So its not completely wacko to suggest he might play.

But agree - Pods probably not a bad match up for Gwilt. Slow and strong and not that tall.. I also never said Bruce would play - I said 'if it were up to me I would play him'. And its not so they probably wont. I'm just curious to see how he goes and its probably not abad week to give him a run against a less than stellar fwd line. But go on and argue with me for the sake of it.

The only problem with that is then you've got to find something for Gwilt to do. Not sure it's a good result for us if he ends up standing next to Eddie Betts.
