Great fellow James... And a good footballer, but
Is it just me, or does he seem to lack any sort of intensity on the footy field ATM? I swear I see him jogging around like Dal... Only problem is, he is a defender, not just an unaccountable mid? And he is nowhere near as good offensively as a Dal!!
James is 188cm which the coaches don't seem to recognise, he is now slow with the turning circle of an aircraft carrier?
At seasons end...
Lik,e to see the 196cm and more athletic Bruce playing KPD with Delaney and Fisher

Re: Gwilt
They can't count kick ins as a disposal
He turned three of those over which resulted in shots on goal?
I'm talking about his intensity around the footy... He is in second gear most of the time
He has lost all pace?!

Re: Gwilt
He does lack pace off the mark, which is where Kennedy got him on a number of occasions. He is good when he gets it, and contests well but a tall mobile player will have a huge advantage over him. Mind you not only Gwilt was undersized, but at times Geary was standing Darling, so it was a valiant effort by our backline, particularly after Gilbert went off.

Re: Gwilt
Was very good body on body, and when the ball hits the deck in a scrimmage he invariably extracts it. Not quick, but did a job for us. Dempster was on Cox at one point. Tough stuff with the ball coming in high.
Gwilty seems to get the dirty jobs, and acquits himself pretty well.

He might not be the answer long term but he is setting a great standard now and until someone like Bruce makes it necessary for him to reinvent himself he's in the best 22.

Re: Gwilt
Agree with that, he's been pretty good this year, but is too small for key defender, too slow for really good quality medium forwards.BigMart wrote:Surely he's not the answer as a KPD going fwd?
With all players available I think he would probably miss out. Fisher & Gilbert comfortably in front... And we really need to persist with Webster & Wright. Delaney is our only true FB at this stage.

True. Gwilt needs Fisher or maybe a Bruce to be effective.

Re: Gwilt
Spot on, Gringo. Sheesh, some people are hard on Jimmy. He and Dempster are doing a manful job holding together a young, undermanned defence. Last night, just to exacerbate the problem thus far in '14, they lost Gilbert just after the pill got bounced, yet still didn't fall apart.gringo wrote:BigMart wrote:Surely he's not the answer as a KPD going fwd?

I reckon if anybody was to ask Richardson what he thinks, he'd be pretty happy with Jimmy's (and Sean's) efforts.

Agreed. I really like Jimmy when he's kicking the ball but I can't see where he fits into our defence if everyone's fit and firing.BigMart wrote:They are undermanned because he is the key defender
That is the point?!
As a flanker
Would you rather play
Gwilt or Webster/Wright

The 1st line is illogical, nonsensical even, so there's no "point" to be questioned, or exclaimed.BigMart wrote:They are undermanned because he is the key defender

The question comes back to just how effective the undermanned defence was last night, against a whopping big set of forwards, of relatively high quality, and who'd played a big part in the WCE's heavy scoring in the 1st 2 rounds.
And, I hardly think those responsible for the list would consider Jimmy as grouped with Webster and Wright. I kinda hope there is a little more sophistication in out list building and management than breaking it into just 'back', 'middle' and 'front'.

Re: Gwilt
When Gwilt, Geary Jones Ray and Maister all become depth players a la KOsi and Blakey last year we will know we have arrived to somewhere near our destination. In the meantime we just need to be patient and pick a side on current form not on potential that may or may not be realised.

I just get sick of people throwing up some kid's name and saying play him instead of Jones, Maister etc etc.The OtherThommo wrote:Blakey played a coupla hundred games as a depth player, Whiskers.whiskers3614 wrote:When Gwilt, Geary Jones Ray and Maister all become depth players a la KOsi and Blakey last year we will know we have arrived to somewhere near our destination. One only need consider the recent history of the Melbourne Football Club to get to that conclusion.whiskers3614 wrote:I just get sick of people throwing up some kid's name and saying play him instead of Jones, Maister etc etc.The OtherThommo wrote:Blakey played a coupla hundred games as a depth player, Whiskers.whiskers3614 wrote:When Gwilt, Geary Jones Ray and Maister all become depth players a la KOsi and Blakey last year we will know we have arrived to somewhere near our destination. Re: Gwilt
Gwilty is doing fine. Lenny's slow but I'm not sure anyone's calling for his removal. He's always had a relaxed demeanour but currently the team defence is working and he's part of it. Getting someone that's quicker doesn't equate to someone that's better or more effective.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Re: Gwilt
Smart and versatile player. With him, Dempster and Fisher likely to finish up this year or next its going to be interesting to see who will step up.
Re: Gwilt
I'll repeat
The fact we have a 6'2" Full Back who is slow off the mark.... Means we are thin down back.
Gwilt is that person!
We would be seriously hoping Bruce becomes a player I would dare say.
Question
If Fisher is fit to play.
Who goes out of the back 6
Delaney
Wright
Dempster
Geary
Gwilt
Webster
That's without
Gilbert, Roberton, Simpkin, Bruce?
