Champion coach
Clarkson, his Hawthorn contract should finish by the time our rebuild is complete.
Hopefully Richardson is the answer but if not we could do a lot worse!

Re: Champion coach
Clarkson just gave Lyon a lesson in coaching.
Champion coach versus predictable coach
Innovative coach versus stodgy coach
Stubborn coach versus flexible coach
A follower versus a leading thinking coach
Make no mistake; Clarkson's coaching was the inspiration that led to such a dominant display tonight

Lyon did his usual trick of trying to play the last game again.
Clarkson did his usual trick of changing the rules and strategy and standard from in front.

Stick with our own guy who is investing a lot of faith in the young players and helping build the team from the bottom rungs.whiskers3614 wrote:Clarkson, his Hawthorn contract should finish by the time our rebuild is complete.

Agreed. Winning home and away games is all that matters. Thats why we won in 2009.

Grand Finals?
Then the score is still AC 2 v RL 0.
Even you have to admit the media seems to exaggerated Lyons brilliance as a coach - yet somehow take AC for granted.
Maybe because he coaches the Hawks its just expected that he wins flags - but if that is the case then it tells ur organisations win Flags and not coaches?
No idea how many finals AC has won - must be a lot.

Absolutely quaking in his boots at meeting master coach in SEptember
after all Lyon has knocked Clarkson out of finals so many times before, and has performed so much better in GF's.
Robert Eddy and Luke Ball are you there?

Re: Champion coach
I still think Freo can win the flag.
But the Lyon disciples trying to make him into some mystic guru just pisses me off.
Is he a good coach? -Yes. One of the best of the current crop for sure.
But lets not carried away with him either. He is just a bloke and he doesnt have mystical powers and he does make mistakes. I can think of plenty.

Well its worked out well since he left. At least you got your way when we had SW. I didnt realise one home and away game decided how good of a coach you are and this is why the tthread was started and not because of his GF record. Anyway its the opposition forum and its makes me wonder why you still care. I think he is a great coach but everytime he wins or loses a game I aint going to start a thread about him but it seems everytime he loses you may. maybe this should have been done after they smashed the pies because as you and a couple of others have said its about his GF record that matters.

Re: Champion coach
Lyon has a dangerous lack of depth compared to the Hawks. Who ever got together hawks list is a genius. The quality of their 26th player isn't much worse than the 8th or 9th best player. they have a smattering of superstars and then a huge amount of very high level footballers. Freo peters out after their best 22. Sounds scarily familiar.
Lyon can make a good to average team play above themselves with clever strategy but sometimes you can't plug the dam wall with chewing gum. lyons game plan is taxing where the Hawks is exhilarating and rewarding. Freo will be alright once they get some players back but they need a bit of luck to climb the mountain again and even more to plant the flag.

Correct Gringo ,Injury will hold back Freo as outside that 22 it's a bit unknown not to mention Pav and Mcpharlins age is creeping up on them !gringo wrote:Lyon has a dangerous lack of depth compared to the Hawks. This is what I don't understand... who are these supposed Lyon disciples?Con Gorozidis wrote: But the Lyon disciples trying to make him into some mystic guru just pisses me off.

I don't think there are any on here. There are plenty that think he is a very good coach, but I don't think any saints fans are "Lyon-lovers". There are however plenty of inane, bitter & twisted haters.
Whiskers is pretty quick to start jerking off everytime Lyon loses a game, but if he is such a s*** coach then just be happy he isn't coaching us anymore?
Fremantle were awful last night, but at round 3, missing their best midfielders I don't think they'll care too much. They'll still end up top 4.

Exactly. those supposed RL lovers dont start a thread everytime they win so i dont get why everytime they lose we need this stuff on a Saints forum.

Let's face it Lyon was a good/Great coach for our club at the time but I think he is better at driving a team who are ready to have a crack at a flag rather than building /Rebuilding a side which Clarko has virtually had to do !

As we Saintas know only too well though, it can be a very fine line in things footballing.
Clarky's boy Ro$$Y could very easily have two flags by now. And (gulp!) even another at the Purple Puke could have been pinched at the death, but for poor kicking on goal. (Eg, Pavlova, set shot 35m out in front... missed the lot from memory. And Roo is made-out to be Robinson Crusoe when he misses... )
In the other coaching camp... how often does Varcoe miss from 35m out, dead in front, even looked around and realised he had time to steady...? Kicked it, and it's probably a draw. Extra time, and anything could happen... Hillibillies were also down several key players. Had the Skid Marks failed again against the Hillbillies and been eliminated... under-achievement with that list would have been the call, and the coach with the angry little man syndrome might not be getting another chance to punch holes in the MCG coaches' box...? (But more free time to abuse and humiliate seventeen year-olds trying to umpire kids' footy games... )
And we might not have had the opportunity to discuss this thread here on SS. Things footballing... fine line I reckon...
PS: And don't forget poor Cuddles. If it wasn't for nine or ten games where the scum opposition team kicked nine or ten lucky goals... it would still be Richo-who...
PPS: I'm very, very glad that the architect of that Skid Marks list is no longer there.

Do you have to be pissed to understand what you are saying because being completely sobar makes it impossible. Hillbilies, skid marks, pavlova, Ro$$y, purple puke, confused.

This is closer to the truth than most of the infantile crap posted above about Lyon.PADDLEPOP1001 wrote:Let's face it Lyon was a good/Great coach for our club at the time but I think he is better at driving a team who are ready to have a crack at a flag rather than building /Rebuilding a side which Clarko has virtually had to do !
As well Lyon had a team that didn't turn it up like the Freo softcocks.
Lyon is a terrific coach and anybody who says different is an idiot.
Also how does it help a Saints fan if Lyon doesn't win a flag apart from petty vindictiveness?
Lance or James??

Re: Champion coach
I think Lyon is doing a fantastic job at Freo. They were perenninal underachievers and I believe Lyon is extracting the best out of them. If anyone here doesn't think so then they had better go and follow soccer or basketball, because one thing is for damn sure, they don't understand footy. Freo are not the best team in the league - they're not. We were the best side in 2009, but our form was tapering off at the wrong end of the season and we lost; just. In 2010 we were the equal fourth best team in the land and came equal first at the conclusion of the Grand Final. He also got us playing above ourselves in 2011 when we finished fifth and in 2008 when, despite looking dodgy for more than half a year, we played off in one of our innumerable preliminary finals of the modern era.
Who gave Freo a hope in hell of beating Geelong in either of those finals - including one at Kardinia Park for pete's sake?
The man can coach, no doubt. But I reckon in terms of player talent and depth, they are behind Hawthorn, Sydney, Geelong and maybe even Essendon now. If they make it to another grand final he has done his job, I would argue.
