What type of player is Shane Savage
As above...
Realistically where do people see him (if at all) fitting into this team.
One thing I can say with some certainty... he is not well suited to the sub role

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
Didn't he play that role about 8 times last year?
Is anyone suited to a ridiculous role that only gives you about 35mins on average of footy
The best is detested by players and I think it's ridiculous..... Either move to three interchanges, scrap it or cap it
Of I played a game of AFL footy and had to sit and watch for 90 minutes I'd be (Brocken) filthy
Felt for young Billings the other week, came on.. No time to get into the game and his debut ended up a fizzer

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
All I can add to that is that it kind onn seems suited to zippy fast players that can come on and make an immediate impact rather than work themselves into games
Maybe Adam Schnieder? Though you can make the argument that he would have more of an impact with greater game time and oh no I've gone cross-eyed

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
Some days you just seem to be able to go on and the footy falls to you.... You can get ten in the first 20 mins.....Other days it doesn't and you need to work your way into it. You don't need to panic, because you've got 4 quarters
A sub is on a hiding to nothing IMO

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
I thought he was going to be a great get but, at the moment, it seems like we payed big overs for him (I actually don't know what we paid for him but he's not going well).
I don't even know what his position is supposed to be, half forward flank? Onballer?

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
Outside mid with a booming kick. Low production, high impact player. Andrew Lovett would be a worthy comparison.
Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
On savage
I liked the look of him in the Prac game... Seemed to have good wheels and used it well?
Struggled in R1 ... Nerves?
Worse in R2.... Vest panic I call it... If you haven't got a touch in 5 minutes you worry and try too hard. Yes there is such a thing... Those players run around like chooks with their head cut off and lack composure with the ball... Ie/savage Saturday

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
Yup, noticed that on the weekend BM. Savage was throwing the footy on the boot. Looked like a bloke on notice and under pressure to retain his spot. Poor choice as sub considering it was his second game for the club as a mature recruit.
Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
Subs a hard position to play. He's probably meant to be a Montagna style winger/outside mid maybe trying to impact the scoreboard a bit - I'm wondering if Monty will be shopped around next trade period? I'm giving Savage some leeway to get out of the Hawthorn system and fully understand his role at the mighty sainters. He seemed a certain starter but all of a sudden there seems real competition for spots. I think they have to keep playing him to see what he's capable of - 1 and quarter games isn't enough.

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
Given where we are this year any young/fringe player selected should be guaranteed a minimum of 4 consecutive games (fitness permitting) to show their worth. I reckon this would lower performance anxiety from affecting their output.
Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
Yeah, agree on that
He might go well on the big/fast Subiaco track?
I also believe a person shouldn't sub twice in a row or become a specialist sub!

Im dont like guaranting games. lets face it if savage plays and doesnt get a kick again this week then you couldnt pick him next week and it probably means another young player is missing out anyway. Billings got dropped and the full game at sandy probably helped his confidence. savage is old enough to be good enough if you understand what I mean. Im unsure he will be dropped anyway but no guarantees please. As for the type of player Im unsure at the saints but he seemed like an outside HFF at the hawks.

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
I'm willing to give him more than 1.2 games before deciding.

I think today's current game styles haven't help him either. I think he likes the open spaces.
Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
I don't see an issue with guaranteeing games, it allows transparency. I reckon Billings getting a taste as sub then a full game back at Sandy was planned and something he was aware of, or a strong possibility of occurring prior to the game against the Dees. Giving guarantees to players can give them confidence - as long as you don't make promises you can't keep like you will get the full season. I'd like Richo to come out and tell Sav you've got a month to show your wares mate, no pressure.

That sounds fine whilst you are winning but say we had 4 guys who have been told they will play for a month and they are getting 3 possessions a game and we are getting smashed and there are guys in the seconds doing well. There would be uproar on here for a start and people saying Richardson is the worst coach of all time. If we get smashed this week and savage gets 2 possessions do you really want him playing next week esecially if a seconds player has another good game.
Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
No issue guaranteeing games? That doesn't mean gifting them.... They have to earn them first.
Alex Doolan was told before the first test in SA that he had all 3 tests at #3
Just allows you to go out and play, without the added pressure looking over their shoulder.... Good for a developing player
Is it true that Harvey, Bowey, Davenport, Danyels were guaranteed games by Doc at the end of 1988?

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
It's a balancing act. I don't think one bad game, even for a fringe player should relegate you to the ressies. He had one poor game than played as sub. As a mature recruit I'd expect more opportunity and as I said previously wouldn't be against promising a few games to find your feet in a new team and gameplan.plugger66 wrote:Old Mate wrote:I don't see an issue with guaranteeing games, it allows transparency. I actually dont think he will be dropped. Well i think I said that previously but if Webster is fit maybe he deserves a game so he does he come in for if it isnt savage.
Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
One thing's for certain - he will be on the plane to New Zealand, and given that, I would be surprised to see him dropped beforehand. In any event, I'm happy to give him some leeway to settle down seeing as he's proven he can perform at this level. It's a bit different to having unwarranted patience with a rookie.

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
In an interview on the Saints website Savage said his preference was play in the midfield rather than as a forward, even though he does like to dob them long at goal from 50. I think he needs a full game to get used to his new teammates, much like Delaney who was very rusty in round 1 but settled in much better in round 2.
With Billings who was sub in round 1, he was sent back to Sandy to get some game-time into his legs. In this early part of the season where people need time on the park it would be a disappointment to get the vest. Ideally it can be used to give a young bloke a taste of the big time or to reintroduce someone who has been out with injury for a prolonged period. As far as this week I am in agreeance with BigMart and think Savage will be very suitable in the wide expanses of Subi oval.

Re: What type of player is Shane Savage
He got something like 33 possessions and 4 goals against us once so he can play but I was talking to a Hawks fan at the game on Saturday and he said his consistency is his biggest issue. Apparently he's capable of special footy but he can have two great games and back up with two weeks of not being sighted.
