big mac and the pelican...

Post: # 1443930Post stinger »

...a lot of you guys aren't going to like what i'm about to post.....

...i have just been watching big boy mcevoy star against the dons....and listening to the comments about how valuable he is going to be to hawthorn, i started to think......

...now we all know that the pelican claims to have recruited the best of the hawks...the ones...left footers mostly..that have put the hawks on top of the heap...and won them the odd premiership......he also cherry picked their side....recruiting to cover their weaknesses......gibson., burgoyne, lake, gunston, hale & simpkin come readily to mind......anyway...the pelican left his beloved hawks for the saints.......supposedly at the request of allan jeans....this year the hawks were going to have a weakness in the ruck........a crucial deficiency if you want to win back to back.........out of the blue..as if by magic, big boy mcevoy lands in their lap......for pick 18 , and an exchange of pick 19 for picks 24 and 59.......geez...bet the hawks couldn't believe their luck....once again they are contenders......and they don't have to mortgage themselves for a basically untried longer.....

....my question to the saints....how many other clubs did you try to sell mcevoy to.... or was there only the one club....hawthorn.......???????....if more than one.....did you try to shop big boy for a lower pick......Ie...gws for their no i pick????...if not why not.......????....why only pelican's first love, hawthorn?????

...guess the club isn't going to answer me.....

I'll bite.....
Evenly there is Ava slim possibility you are right
IMO it's still a win/ win
We Will not be around come grand final time, I'm personly happy with the swap.

Not only that I will go so far as to say, the model Pelch has got going at the moment is in front of the pack. Mark my words , sides like Collingwood , Carlton, will quickly slide way behind us.
Don't think you can any longer expect to just top up your list to improve enough to get a flag, unless your already there inthe window , like the Hawks/ Swans / dockers

Macca was a good player for us and will be a good player for the hawks

But when he gets a hitout , do you ever see him do anything other than tap the ball down to his feet !

Didn't we get Savage as well? Not that he had a great first game.

it's a question, i'm now actually surprised hasn't been asked before...gws needed a ruckman.....sure...they eventually ended up with mumford....but they had picks one and two.....we should have been able to deal with them.....dal was also on the table as was fisher....

originally mcevoy was a top ten pick......untried at the time....he was still certainly worth a top ten pick 7 years later ..after he had matured into a good afl player...certainly not a champion...but a gooden all the same.....

...and for whoever asked....we may have still recruited dunstan with pick 24.....or billy hartung anyway.....but we may have picked kelly or boyd as well......

...my question still is.......who was/is the pelican recruiting for....us or the hawks?????

Hi Sting, I like Super's answer too.

As painful as it is for all of us to see favourite sons elsewhere, I see this as a win for St Kilda.

- We scored Dunstan. After only one senior game, I'm totally confident in calling this a win.
- We scored Acres. He might need a couple of years, but plenty of way better judges than I rate him as an absolute ripper. Personally, I'm confident that Blake will be looked back upon as the bargain get of this draft. (Eli will give him some competition though, and has the 'advantage' of coming from the rookie draft. :D )
- I also think that once the Savage settles in he will be more than handy.
- Pick 24 gained Billy Hartung. Thank gawd we missed that!!! Attitude or not, he's way too small and slight. Won't make it against AFL sized men. And even if he does, he doesn't have the body type to stand up to have a long career.

And as for Big Boy... Firstly, lets see him keep this up. If he does, then this trade simply moves from a St Kilda win to a win/win, and good luck to the Owl, IMHO.

In any case we owe Hawthorn a couple.
After all they were good enough to take Joel Smith, Greene and Trott off our hands!

A quick opinion on our recruiting in general.

This century the following clubs have had (at various stages) a high number of early draft picks... Saintas, Skunks, Dawks, Poodles, Nuff Nuff, Carlscum, Effndope, Tuggers.

Although the Poodles went close, only the first three listed clubs have played in grand finals. Although we were tragically robbed by fate (and maybe substances?), we have actually been up the top of the ladder longer and more consistently than the other two.

For all it's faults... not so shabby recruitemnt, especially when one considers our resource constraints c/f most of the others.

The remaining clubs listed are about to reach the stage where it suddenly and shatteringly ( ) occurs to them that they have recruited poorly and will not make it to that final weekend in September (or October)... Poodles have already reached this stage.

Why did they miss out?
- Look at the lack of quality key forwards they drafted.
- To a slightly lesser extent, look at their drafting of key defenders.
- And look at their drafting of downhill-skiing on ballers. (Carlscum in particular. )

Now look at the list that we are crafting... key defenders may still be a work in progress, but everything else is falling into place beautifully. Sure, it will take a couple of years (coz as Pluggs knows, Rome wasn't built in a day)..., but big things are ahead I reckon. 8-)

and watching rioli grab the lead and then the win basically on his own, made me think who was the flucker who overlooked him to draft big boy in the first place....madness......or lack of any football nous....take your pick...and it's not me being a smart arse after the event...i was as mad as hell listening to the original 2007 draft when it happened...made me feel quite sick from memory....

Didn't take Cyril because they wouldn't take advice about his "average" psychological profile. Should've taken him, but like most of the others, didn't listen to the advice at the time. Cost us a beauty, although all the others bar Hawthorn were in the same boat.

A great last 10 minutes by McEvoy. He really got them over the line with his work in the middle. Did he lose some hair over the summer?

I think that the main issue was that the Hawks were chasing Longer. The Saints obviously considered Longer a better option in the long term, and McEvoy was the carrot the Hawks couldn't resist.

Win/win.
