Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
Next week will tell us more. He's likely to cop Patton or Cameron. On last night's form, I'm a bit concerned, to be honest.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
Thought he played well in the second half and won some important contests.
Kicking early was dodgy and he did not have a lot to beat, but thought he was steady enough.
Will be interesting to see ow he goes next week.

Had two turnovers pretty close to each other, but afterwards seemed to settle down and look ok.
Haven't seen enough to pass judgement.

He has fluffed kicks badly in each game I've seen him play. Doesn't seem to connect on the kicking part of the foot.
Might be just nerves before he settles in.
But he'd better fix it.
We need him. And Gwilty needs him -- what a great game he played, being a bit freed up.

Not necessarily. If well in tye midfield clearances again and with Lenny and Joey back that should limit GWS clean and quick forward movement.FQF wrote:Next week is the big test. Let's continue this thread then.

He was drafted at the end of the 2009 season as a rookie. He did not play in 2010 (and was not elevated). His first game for North was in round 9, 2011. He has had 3 seasons in the AFL. This is his fourth.

If you are a rookie you are an AFL player. It is that simple. He has done 5 full pre seasons as an AFL player. Get it. He is 25 half way through the year. he is fully developed. I was out one year.

Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
After watching the whole replay I can't fault his game other than those two successive clangers. He should learn from those and I look forward to seeing how he goes against a real forward this week

he was pick 74 in the 2011 national draft.....a rookie elevation........he had already played 26 games for north ...this is his third season on a senior list.....2012 & 2013 being his first two....his brother cameron was drafted in 2010.....

Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
Hi all,
I agree regarding his ball use. Basically, he needs to handball off to Webster, Gears, Dempster and even CJ as much as possible. He should be absolultey no where near the goal square after a behind!
However, I thought defensively he was solid. Took at least one mark from an opposition kick and plenty of spoils. He will do a job but needs to know his limitations. Pass mark for mine (because we won; therefore, those clangers didn't hurt as much).
I think we'll need Bruce and Delaney in the side this week to combat Cameron, Patton, and Giles.

Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
At the end of the day I think the importance of having him fill the FB roll and letting the likes of Gwilt and Dempster play their natural game,is where the improvement will come from. Zac D was no star but he played a roll that let the rest of our backline do what they did best. Its no coincidence the Gwilt had his best game in a while. If he turns out to be half decent, great, but so long as he can play his role it gives us a much better chance of not getting 4 or 5 kicked on us every week by a monster forward, which has been killing us in recent years.
Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
He is still somewhat undersized against big forwards - 194 cm. So although he plays tall, we will still have an undersized backline against GWS, and many other forwards in the league.
Hopefully Bruce will remedy this.

Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
Do they play Giles mostly forward now? That could definitely get messy, then they'd have:FQF wrote:He is still somewhat undersized against big forwards - 194 cm. So although he plays tall, we will still have an undersized backline against GWS...
Giles 200cm
Patton 197cm
Cameron 194cm
What are the matchups there?

Bruce would be a certain starter you'd think - due to his height if nothing else.bergholt wrote:Do they play Giles mostly forward now? Probably play Delaney on Patton and Bruce on Giles. For Cameron it's anyone between Gilbert/Gwilt/Fisher/Roberton/Simpkin.
Hopefully we can exploit them for being oversized.
They are going to have difficulty finding a match up for Roo though with their first two defenders out injured.

Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
To be honest he was terrible. Looked messy and slow and not up to AFL standard. Needs massive improvement. I've seen him play before and I've never seen him play like that. Maybe he needs more support around him, but he aint going to get it in our team this year.

Re: So how did people rate Delaney's game?
I would ask that everyone take a deep breath and give him time. What was the alternative on Saturday?. I thought he got better as the game went on. None of these young KPP's (including Bruce) are going to be consistent early until they gain confidence with a few games under their belt. Without Delaney carrying out his role, would we have got the same positive effort from Gwilt and Dempster at the weekend?. Let's give them plenty of game time before reaching a decision.
