Rhys Stanley
Just a quick note, his best game since 2012 and very encouraging.
Except for the sanity nothing much has been lost.
Re: Rhys Stanley
Agreed. Contested really well tonight i thought, couple of goals and could have had a couple more. Bit of confidence will go a long way to keep him improving imo.

Re: Rhys Stanley
Agreed. Was particularly good in the ruck. Showed a lot more commitment and intensity than had been evident in the pre-season
I am marching in the Saints army
Re: Rhys Stanley
Yeah if he held a couple more of those marks he could have finished with 4 goals.
But yeah not a bad game from him.

Re: Rhys Stanley
Some either lazy or soft efforts.... Lacks physical confidence like A Fiora did?
But on the other hand, he did what he does... Tease with some nice work?

Re: Rhys Stanley
the next level is just sitting there for rhys stanley to grasp
we can all see it, it is so close
if he had held those two marks he would indeed have 4 goals
got to get that next level

He's kicked more of his goals from the goal square than any other player, I reckon.

Re: Rhys Stanley
I think we need to persevere with Rhys
He obviously has potential but his baseline performance needs to improve by about 10% in order for him to reach the minimum performance level required for AFL.
The encouraging thing tonight was that we have confirmed what we've all basically suspected for 2 years.
Rhy is a ruck forward.
He has a good leap on him, leads well and often to the right spaces, is an okay kick of the football, ball handling skills okay for a big guy
There is however a psychological aspect of his game that isn't there yet... he has this weird tendency to get both hands on the ball and drop a sitter. In particular during the contest, on 2 occasions he either beat his opponent on the lead or out-manuered him in the air, looked set to take an easy mark and spilled it.
If he eliminates this from his game and maybe learns to tackle a bit better... he has the potential to be an A-Grade player
For mine, Rhys needs to play as many games possible this season and demonstrate this improvement. Remember that other weeks the opposition will be better then tonight. If he makes strides we keep him other he should be cut

we don't need to cut him just yet.......there are plenty to get rid of at years end....
....tdl, lee. maister and milera for starters......with lenny retiring and fisher to gws......we don't need to get rid of any with potential...
.everybody still loves lenny....and we always will

Re: Rhys Stanley
I'm not suggesting we should
that was an encouraging game but he needs to improve in a few areas. If he doesn't improve over the course of this season then I don't think he ever will at which point it won't matter when we cut him.
as for your list... I wouldn't cut Lee at seasons end, he's shown potential and last I heard Fisher didn't go to GWS this trade period either.
Milera is in a similar spot to Rhys... clearly has something but needs to show that he has the potential to take his game to the next level

Re: Rhys Stanley
He dropped 2 sodas 20m out from goal. I wouldn't use strong to describe his marking. I agree his second efforts were ok and he seemed more involved than usual though.gringo wrote:His marking is strong -the delivery to him was awful but his second efforts tonight were great.

I would love Rhys to be a superstar, but he has a long way to go.

Re: Rhys Stanley
He, as we have known for a while, has the potential to be one of the most difficult match ups in the comp. Don't know of another tall that could rum with him, and has the height advantage over the smaller players who could run with him.
Really liked in the third quarter where he backed himself with his pace at half back and ran and delivered the ball.

Re: Rhys Stanley
I doubt he will ever be a superstar but I see him as a Westhoff type good player who is adaptable and damaging. Doesn't have to be Rooey just a good player will do and he showed signs tonight.

Re: Rhys Stanley
Rhys was good tonight.
Yes he just didn't quite hang on to a couple of marks.
Missed finishing off a goal.
But did some impressive things.
Put a great bump on at one stage.
We have to persevere with him.
He still isn't in the right position at times.
When we have the ball he doesn't present well enough and give options.
When we don't have the ball he doesn't get to defensive postions quick enough.
But he does have some good attributes and certainly gave us something tonight.
