KPIs for First Round Debutants

Post: # 1441033Post bergholt »

What's acceptable for these three guys? I reckon:

Dunstan - 18 possessions, 4 tackles
Big raps on this kid, he's shown he knows how to find the footy in preseason and Melbourne aren't a great side so he should be able to get some touches. Less than 18 would be a bit disappointing because I'm hoping he plays 20 games in the midfield this year.

Billings - 4 possessions, 1 goal
I don't think he's fully up to AFL fitness yet so I'd be surprised if he wasn't the sub. He should get a quarter or so in a forward pocket, so I don't expect him to get too much of the footy but he should get on the end of one.

Templeton - 10 possessions, 1 goal
He's a bit of a livewire but I think the pace of the game will find him out at this point. They say his endurance is good though so that means he should play most of the game and therefore if he gets less than 10 touches I'll be disappointed. And I assume he'll be forward of centre, given we have no small forwards, so he should have a chance at a goal.

That sounds pretty reasonable to me bergholt.
As you say - I think against Melbourne and with his pre-season and maturity - Dunstan should be able to get into the rhythm of it pretty early (he will probably find the first quarter a bit hot) but i expect him to settle in and get some ball in the 2nd half.

Dont expect much from the other 2 - as you say. But Eli supposedly has elite endurance so will get a fair bit of game time youd think.

With Jack Im more interested in quality over quantity at this stage.

I'd happier to see lot's of tackles, second efforts and classy disposal & vision when they get it.

Disposal numbers shouldn't be seen as much of an indicator for debutantes really.

3 exciting guys to watch this week though!

My only expectations are as follows.

- That they put there head over the ball

- That they go when they need to go

- That they chase and tackle and do the one % stuff

- that they use the ball well when they get it

Spot on.

And every other player needs to get around them when they do the above.

I certainly understand the appeal of setting Kpi's in the form of possessions and tackles for the debutants;
however I reckon we should judge their games not so much on statistics but on passages of play. For blokes
running around in their first game you rarely see a Polo style 28 touches and BOG performance. Jack Steven's first
game was characterised by a Robert Harvey/chris Judd style burst from the centre and goal.
He had 14 touches for the game. If Luke Dunstan wins a big clearance, Billings hits Roo lace out or Templeton kicks a
freakish goal I think that will be enough to have me excited! Go saints

My number one criteria would be that they get through the game uninjured.
And that they all touch the ball at least once.
Anything else is a bonus.

35 possessions and 4 goals, 35 touches 9 tackles and 25 possessions 3 goals for the lads

Rising Star award sowed up positions 1,2,3 and all top 5 B+F

Billings Browlow 2014

Players like Dnagerfield and Fyfe then come out and say we are joining the Saints to play with these 3 guys.

Saints 60,000 members going in to 2015 Premiership year.

That is all.

That they contribute to the team performance and play their role within the structures

Given that we don't know what those roles are, I guess you're saying that we shouldn't presume to judge them? Sounds like a boring forum if we don't judge any of the players!

I'm ready to cut them a lot of slack in their first game. This is a huge step up from under 18's and they will be as nervous as can be. Plus they will probably be playing in a losing team.
