Again, coming back to Tony Lockett’s departure at the end of 1994, St Kilda supporters were crying out for a new hero. Among the many recruits they secured in the Lockett trade was a zippy undersized wingman from Berwick dubbed “Little Aussie” who instantly became a darling of the St Kilda faithful. Jones weighed just 66kg when he ran out for the Saints in the 1995 pre-season competition and along with fellow draftees Joel Smith and Tony Brown, embodied the new generation at St Kilda. Jones went on to be a two-time All-Australian and finished with 226 games – which at the time had him 11th on the St Kilda games tally. His running goal in the 1997 Grand Final remains one his most enduring highlight.

A few international mates at Uni residence came to Saints games just to watch the G-Train and talk about him the entire match.

Some players who deserve a special mention:
Craig O'Brien - Underated nuggety forward who saw the light after being traded out of Windy Hill. A master of striking first and then receiving the free after the ump spotted his opponent retaliating. Held up our forward line after Lockett left. Still dirty at having to watch him and Lockett play for the Swans together. Bonus points for threatening to kill an umpire after being suspended ina reserves game.
Bob Jones - A real tryer. Has a reasonably good year in 1987, holding down CHB. Can anybody name a gun Saints CHB since Val Perovic? MAguire was on the cusp till he broke his leg, poor bastard. Jones blew out his knee and was never the same again. A far better palyer than his son.
Wow Jones - Servicable ruckman from Carlscum who tried his all and was not afraid to throw his weight (and elbows) around to protect his smaller teammates, so much so that he never had a farewell game as he finished his final season on suspension! If you haven't seen the last quarter of Saints Vs Geelong 1988 at Kardinia PArk, then you can't call yourself a true fan - which leads me to one of my all time favorites......
Gregory Burns - A bloody good centreman and can still be found at his favorite holiday destination - Snake Gully! Played in alot of shite teams and we really only had a sniff if Burnsey was on fire. Usually ended with him snotting someone too. Does some beautiful fend offs in the aforementioned game at Geelong. Was interviewed by Rhys-Jones in Inside Football a few years back. A must read, some really funny stories.
What of the current lot? Tom Lee could be one if he was any good. Maybe Josh Saunders, he is a real mongrel, or possibly if one of our OS recruits pan out? Time will tell.

And when opposition fans came to Moorabbin, just to watch young Anthony play. I used to go to home games with a group of 8 mates, of which only 3 followed the saints. The others were opposition supporters who came only to watch Plugger. Carl was my first footballing hero, but Plugger was just something else!
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!
