Open training - Junction Oval - 5:30pm, TONIGHT
http://www.saints.com.au/news/2014-03-1 ... ction-oval
ST KILDA will make a return to the Junction oval on Monday for an open training run.
The Saints will have a light session beginning at 5.30pm as they prepare for their round one clash with Melbourne, before signing autographs for fans.
The Junction Oval, officially named St Kilda Cricket Ground, was the Saints home for 564 VFL matches from 1897-1964.
While the venue has since been a first class cricket venue and an amateur football ground, the Junction Oval remains the sporting heartbeat of the bayside region.
Situated at the junction between St Kilda Road and Fitzroy Street and adjacent to the Albert Park Lake, the ground saw 257 St Kilda wins.
Bill Mohr booted a record 397 goals in just 98 games at the ground, while Harry Lever and Fitzroy’s Garry Wilson each played 108 matches there.
The Junction Oval is no longer directly affiliated with St Kilda Football Club, with Linen House Centre in Seaford the Saints elite training facility. Moorabbin remains the club’s community hub after hosting 254 games from 1965-1992.
Fans are invited to attend from 5pm, while the merchandise truck and a membership marquee will be in attendance.
St Kilda Football Club suggests fans enter from the Fitzroy Street side rather than Kings Way.
DID YOU KNOW?
- St Kilda also played 16 away games at the Junction – 13 against Fitzroy and three against South Melbourne.
- In its last home game at the venue in August 1964, the Saints defeated Geelong by 12 points in front of over 37,000 fans.
- The current capacity of the ground is 8,000.
- Melbourne’s Fred Fanning holds the VFL/AFL record for most goals in a match, booting 18 in round 19, 1947 at the Junction Oval.
- 34 years later, Grant Thomas collected 38 disposals against Fitzroy – a St Kilda Football Club record at the ground.
- St Kilda moved to Moorabbin Oval mostly motivated by its desire to operate its own venue, rather than be the tenant for the owner St Kilda CC.
- The first ever women’s football match was played at the Junction in 1921
- The Junction hosted three Grand Finals in 1898, 1899 and 1944.

I thought GT was a CHB, 38 possessions is a good effort wherever he played.

The stats for that Grant Thomas game are here - http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/game ... 10822.html
GT - 25 kicks and 13 handballs.
Saints in front by 19 points at 1/2 time but folded badly, scoring only two goals to Fitzroy's ten in 2nd half.
Some dismal figures on the Saints side of the ledger, but some big names in the Lions team.

That is a blast from the past. It just reminded me that some good friends of mine played "If You Leave Me - Can I Come Too?" from the Mentals at their wedding.philtee wrote:And here's the 3XY music chart for that week...Jessie's Girl would have been going off in the Saints Disco.

Re: Open training - Junction Oval - 5:30pm, TONIGHT
atleast the media were able to find you mcadam05
although ch 9 and ch7 are prerecorded- already seen twitterpics of them- and Ch ten crossing.... would be interesting if it is actually ' live'.
like the live cricket from years ago- recorded and sound affects added later.
if we're 'going back' to the old days can the hold training from 5.30- 7.30 so I can make it after work

They all kicked and marked and ran around and looked great.
Except for Gilbert, Fisher, Schneider, Acres and probably a couple of others.

Rehab group 2:
Curren, Gilbert and some others with Billings joining after attempting the main group.
Fisher in the stands, Steven on crutches. Acres out on the ground but not moving.

Re: Open training - Junction Oval - 5:30pm, TONIGHT
Missed the first 20 minutes. Beautiful evening for a bit of a kick. Only about a seventy spectators maximum, and some of those
seemed like family and friends, but at least the TV stations were there. Looked like a fairly standard skills session, nothing
too extraordinary. Still, it was nice to hear the cries of "Sippa, Sippa, Sippa !" and "Gears, Gears !"
Luke Dunstan's head is built like a battering ram. Jason Holmes is a big big unit, but he can kick a footy.
I barely recognised Armitage - it looks like he's had a No. 2 for Be Brave And Shave or something. Riewoldt moving freely but
didn't join in all the sessions. Jack Steven on crutches as in the photo, and he's moving OK, but trying to keep the weight off the foot.
Ground in perfect nick - we should try for a pre-season match there next year, Cricket Club permitting.

Gilbo raised $10,000 for shave for a cure- leukemia and if / when he did Armo shave too- eventually raised over $11,000 and Tommy wlahs raised $550 in 30 minutes by joining Gilbo in his shave.
