Re: best ruckman since spider?
Even though Gardiner was past his best by the time he got to us he was much of the reason for our improvement in 2009.
Ben has improved and if he continues to do so for another 20 years he will be almost as good as Gardiner.
Ben may be a better person but as ruckmen the comparison is like that of a water pistol to a cannon!

Remember some games and finals he was just massive for us .
Super player.
Pulled in big marks inside 50.
Can't remember Macca ever taking a grab inside 50.
No comparison.

Where''s ackland in this thread?
but seriously, even king, few times that he did play, old age and all, was a far better ruckman for us than mcevoy.

McEvoy....
Explain why Gardiner was better?
Gardy was serviceable but past his best
McEvoy was servicable... And played more games

Totally agree - great ruckman, aggressive had a presence and could kick a goal. He going down really hurt us when it counted...Bernard Shakey wrote:Gardiner by a country mile. McEvoy is a crap ruck man.

Re: best ruckman since spider?
Didnt really help as it left Roo one out as Kosi rucked and in the follow up game Kosi was shot.

My guess is there was no follow up game if the same ruck combination stayed. Lets face it we are all guessing but thats my opinion.

Re: best ruckman since spider?
Maybe that's why the club were eager to trade McEvoy, like most posters in this thread, they, the club, knew McEvoy was not up to it in the ruck.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: best ruckman since spider?
Agree, and like others said, both Gardi and King were past their best, but still better than Ben.Zed wrote:Gardner easily , then King, then McEvoy
I always rated Lazar, and Paul Harding better than Spider, but I was young at the time. I actually thought Paul was under rated.
Re: best ruckman since spider?
Gardy was pretty good
Played 50 games
He returned about 17ho per game, had a fairly good to advantage ratio
He averaged around 10 disposals
4 marks per game 0.9 contested
1 tackle per game
Just under half a goal per game
He came as an establish Ruckman
Ben was a developing Ruckman for the majority of his saints career
91 games
18 HO per game... Probably less to advantage
11 possession per game
4.5 marks per game with 1.5 being contested
Similar clearances
0.3 goals per game
I think we underrate one a bit and overrate one a bit
