Saints in the off season.
With just two days to go till the start of the 2014 season I think I can safely say that no player has put a foot wrong (since the Mad Monday episode). No drink driving, illegal drugs, fights, assaults, public drunkenness, racism etc.
All media publicity has been positive.
Good on you ,Saints!

That St Kilda joint is just full of alcohol, drugs, hookers and, worst of all, men with bushwacker beards, armfuls of ink and funny little costumes.
And that’s just in the coffee shops

Hopefully this new batch of players aren't as much a bunch of dicks.
To be honest i reckon its really hard. Yep they get great money but especially locals have mates going out all the time and having a few drinks and basically carrying on like 18 year olds. These guys have to turn 30 12 years early. And just because they are good at footy doesnt make them brain surgeons or even people who care about money.

Re: Saints in the off season.
Agree plugger, they are just kids who have to grow up too quickly. I wouldn't want my grandkids to be AFL footballers.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell

I would because the other options could be worse. A good family will get most of them through. Sport is the greatest things kids can do IMO.
Re: Saints in the off season.
Kids join the army or police at 18, maybe they miight (sadly) get shot at and killed etc. They know that before they sign up. These kids at 18, are treated and educated by the clubs about what lies ahaead. Dont like it???? DONT PLAY afl.plugger66 wrote:dragit wrote:It shouldn't be that hard, should it?

They have good family and will play sport if they want to. The other options are myriad and they will make their own decisions. Most career paths are not worse than AFL.plugger66 wrote:Bernard Shakey wrote:Agree plugger, they are just kids who have to grow up too quickly. I wouldn't want my grandkids to be AFL footballers.

Just because you stuff up doesnt mean you dont like it. Im confused by that. There are also kids who work in a hotel or as a plumber who can do what they like without anyone testing them for drugs or seeing how much they drink. By the way can you tell me a name of a cop who stuffed up and quit or was sacked when they were under 20 years of age?

Its simple, you are an elite athlete, you need to accept this and the RESPONSIBILITIES that go with this, as i said cnat hack it dont play. Blokes who are plumbers etc, KNOW they aint gunna be under the spotlight, AFL players are told they will be.

Yep and they should know exactly what that requires at 18 years of age. Crap. My guess is a few who say its easy or just quit also just forget what it was like at 18 years of age. They are young and immature. They can know whats required. Doesnt mean they can handle it. Very easy for some of us to say it easy to be an AFL footballer because of the perks, well that is obviously not the case because a few do stuff up. Unluckily or luckily I never had the choice at 18 but if i was as immature now as I was back then I would assure you I would have stuffed up. And this is coming from someone who never got in trouble with the cops but I loved my mates and a drink. i doubt footy would have changed me enough not to stuff up.

Do not rape anyone.
Do not take photos of cocks.
Do not set people alight.
Just those kinds of things...

Yep they are stupid things all done by guys over 25 years of age. Im talking about 18 year old kids. Having said that Ive taken photos of cocks, set clothes alight but I hope i havent raped anyone but maybe if I was a name then things I did when young could be called rape.

Re: Saints in the off season.
The leadership of a club takes much of the responsibility of the culture of behavioural expectations and standards.... Not the new draftees
The leaders set the examples for others to follow IMO
Sydney, IMO have/had? the best culture in the AFL.... Freo have set a great standard... Adelaide seem to be professional, and Port have improved 10 fold
Stk, Carl, Rich, Ess, Coll would rank among the poorer off or on field cultures in the AFL imo

Re: Saints in the off season.
Was very impressed on how the club handled the controversy at the end of last season.
Have a good feeling this new generation of players might win some respect on and off the field in years to come.

I doubt it. Reckon you'd be as proud as punch of a grandson who got to play footy at AFL level.Bernard Shakey wrote:I wouldn't want my grandkids to be AFL footballers.

Re: Saints in the off season.
I would be over the moon if my boy was half the man Lenny Hayes is! Or Ball, Blake or Cotchin
Be filthy if he was anything like Lovett, Connors or Fev
The person has little to do with the profession and visa versa.... The are just good and less good people
