Lockett's 100th vs Footscray 1987

Sadly this isn't from my Collection but here's 20mins of Goodness from Stk vs Footscray Rd 19 '87 One of my all time fave games

I remember there was a young Sts fan who had a terminal illness and died in the lead up to this game. Barks visited the family and gave them a pair of his footy socks to put on their boy before he was buried.

The morning of the game was overcast and rainy but then the sun came out of the clouds, perhaps a sign of the young Sainters spirit saying the weather will be good, Plugger will kick his ton and we will win.

I recall reading about this later, in the Inside Football mag perhaps.

I was listening to that game with my old man, and seeing as times were tough, we waited until 3/4 time to go down and get in for free.

I was 11, and still remember that last quarter and the atmosphere vividly. Bolted home afterwards too to record the replay and nearly wore out the VHS tape I watched it that many times.

I even get about 0.1 seconds of air time too if you look really closely at the top level of the outer!

Yeah, I remember after getting home from the match and watching the highlights (that year on ABC) Tim Lane mentioned it when presenting the game. Also, Doc wasn't coaching us, as he had suffered a stroke over the course of the week.

For me, 1987 was the first year where, as a Saints supporter, I felt the club had a real future to look forward to.

This was the only game I missed in around 10 years!!! had to pick the ex in-laws up from the airport. I was in tears driving home listening to plugger kicking his 100th

I will never forget that day, it was the start of the rise from a shocking period at the club & Plugger had to be seen to be believed back then. Its a sore point of mine that in he period of 1987 to 1990 especially, Match of the round wasn't at Moorabbin very often & the great moments of Lockett were seen by few on a regular basis.
He was simply extra ordinary & as dynamic as any player to have ever played the game. I doubt his top 10 games in that period could be topped by anyone. he was a colossus. His speed & agility were under rated in this period, he had everything a great forward could be blessed with. Speed, strength, legendary foot skills, innate judgement & footy brains, plenty of mongrel & intimidation & a great over head mark & almost unplayable body on body. He is simply the greatest footballer ever to wear our jumper & for me arguably the greatest of all time.

His peak was 1989 in my opinion, that was his zenith physically & I will go to my grave wondering if he didn't hit Guy Mc Kenna & get rubbed out for 4 weeks & then hit the grog in Ballarat for a month & subsequently get injured & ruled out for the season upon his return what he would have kicked for a season. He was on 70 odd goals after Round 9 or something!!!! 170 goals plus wasn't out of the question.

He was badly injured in 1988 & hardly played, 1989 was the same as I recounted, 1990 he did his back against West Coast in the pre season cup & came back a third into the season & 1992 he still missed 5 games. He was always missing games with suspension & injury yet he could come back after 2 months out & play like he was playing last week. I don't know how you can do that at that level. Who can forget the bag he kicked against Adelaide Crows at Moorabbin on his first game back after the summer, like he had only played last week!!

Regarding the 1987 Footscray game, I remember the game saving tackle by Tony Evans #44. What happened to him? He had some talent. The other player I always say could have been anything was John Peter-Budge but unfortunately he had a bad back & was shipped off to Richmond. He had talent!!!

What an era, I was an impressionable teenager & will always love that time at Moorabbin, no fancy stadium can replace that feeling with locket in the goal square.

Aaah it was so much more enjoyable to watch back in those days.
The excitement that Plugger generated was just unbelievable.
Remember jumping the fence with about 5,000 others.
The future seemed so bright back then.

One of the most enjoyable days of football I've ever been too. Fairy tale stuff. And Footscray weren't a bad side.

Out of the darkness of the 80's horror days is how I remember it. Winmar and Lockett combining beautifully.

I've got some highlights on a VHS somewhere, but no idea if it's watchable still. Must get it transferred to DVD.

1987 was the first year of my diary writing that I had a big page diary. So that season was when I started documenting Pluggers feats to the nth detail.

He started that season slow. I remember watching the Round 3 game v bears live on telly in Cairns. We won by 50 but Plugger only kicked 3. It was my first proper look at this rising wonderkid.

A couple of weeks later, he kicked 12.3 in a losing team, at that time the most goals scored by a player in a losing team ever. That was against the Dees at the G. We lost by 48 and Plugger kicked 12 out of 14!!! The Doc said later it was one of the best performances he had ever seen by any player ever.

The rest of that year was pretty good. On Brownlow night, I had worked out he would poll about 20 but didn't think it would be enough to win.

Well, he did poll 20 and he did win and shared it with Johnny Platten.

Yep, Tony Lockett remains the best player I have seen.

This moment is only comparable to the last quarter of North Melbourne preliminary final in 1997.

First time as a ST Kilda supporter that I thought we were good, after years of crap performances and copping it as a ST Kilda supporter we finally on the rise. The double raised arms of Lockett signaled more than 100 goals it symbolised hope for a generation that had never had any.

The noise was massive the grandstand was rocking, after four years of wooden spoons Lockett gave us something to look forward to and to dream of success.

Nice summary Vazelos. He did have exceptional speed off the mark didn't he? Apart from his mongrel, body on body strength and deadly accuracy, he was very quick off the mark and for a 100kg hulk he could launch himself into the air as well. He had everything. Those old days at Moorabbin........sigh........footy before it was commercialised and homogenised.

Yes St Byron, 2004 to 2010 was an amazing ride but the sheer adrenalin & experience at Moorabbin with Plugger in the goal square for me will never be matched.

When G Burns or N Winmar or G Mc Adam or R Harvey burst out the square & Plugger would start dummy leading waving his arms in the air directing where he wanted the ball to go & the anticipation of him marking as the ball was in the air was just amazing!!

The crowd used to go bananas!!

I have posted here a few times before that Lockett's No.14 game day jumper (Rd 19 vs Footscray) was raffled off in the social club after the game.

It now hangs in our wardrobe at home as my mother won that particular raffle that night.

Only time Plugger kicked a ton wearing No. 14 and it was also his Brownlow year.

Frank Coghlan. Never forget that game in 87. My memory suggests Plugger kicked 2 goals every quarter and need 7 for the 100 but it was his 101st that won the game. Still got the vidoe of the game somewhere here at home. What a night up at the social club. Think the Saturday disco may have started around that time.
