No idea but its great fun watching your team being good enough to make the finals.

Well maybe im easily please but i would take falling at the second last hurdle than what we have gone through in the last few years, one of which was RL's. Anyway I reckon its the last hurdle.

Re: Richard Colless re Ross Lyon
Perhaps Chips, BJ, Dal and Milne, Roo and Lenny were past their best but RL's 'end of an era' call was premature and unnecessary. The psychological damage was already there and the players (and Lyon too) took too long to get over our GF losses.
The way we ended the year in 2011 and the glimpses of brilliance were evidence enough for me to think that we could have climbed the summit one more time in 2012. I believe his comment caused a few worshippers (including some players) to lose all hope and to stop believing.

I reckon you havent realised the damage of the 2010 loss. it was over the minute the second siren rang. The players were shot and probablt RL. The supporters were just about done and probably all the staff. Not many sides come back after losing 2 GF's in a row especially when you are an aging side. As shown by how they went in 2013 I reckon they remarkably well in 2012. Couldnt have expected more.

Re: Richard Colless re Ross Lyon
Poor cry baby Colless.
COLA is a load of s***, a lot of regular people early less than $45K per year and survive.
Players will go to clubs for opportunity or home sickness or friends, or for their carrier. You can't have an even playing field if you start giving one team more money allowance due to external factors that are not even relevant.
Sydney should just be happy that they've only got one other AFL side to compete with for members ffs.
Giving any team more money than others is utter bulls***, as the amount of money these players are earning well exceed any problems of being considered poor.
My stance is COLA is rubbish, especially when it all ends up going to one or two players in the end anyway.
As for our 2012 season, I thought we got screwed, from memory we lost 5 games by under 13 points or less. If we had made the finals, I seriously remember believing we could beat the majority of the teams in the top 8, definitely better than the ones from 5 to 8. Our percentage was something like 125%, it was very high, we just got stooged in some games, like the Collingwood one with Harry O Hero faking a free kick against Milne, s*** like that, gosh I hate that dude, friggen hero cry baby, i saw this, that, he said this, he she call the wahhambulance.

Please don't give them credence. The two Steves - Harris, and I can't even remember the name of the other, are just marketing opportunists who got lucky. Fremantle will fall at the final hurdle again (just like us) and will lose the mercenary and again plumb the depths (for a long time hopefully)evertonfc wrote:The simple fact is that we went in thinking we had all the negotiating power.

plugger66 wrote:I suppose the question is have we stuffed up in the last few years.
Why is that the question?
All clubs have stuffed up in the last few years. It's a no brainer that we, and every other club has stuffed up in the last few years.
The big difference is, that some clubs are given so many free kicks by the AFL that the impact of these stuff ups is far less than it is to us.
Collingwood sacking Malthouse and then him coaching them to a flag within a year is THE biggest coaching stuff up the game has ever seen. But when you get 17 games at the MCG each year and massive TV promotion - the hit you take as a club isn't that big.
Sydney even admit that they couldn't survive without winning and without getting an extra $1m in the salary cap each year!! So how well are they travelling??! Bit rich for them to be potting anyone I'd have thought.
So I'm not sure why "the question" is whether we've stuffed up in the last few years. Of course we have. Lots was our own doing, lots wasn't. But the reality, when the AFL have you starting with a handicap the stuff ups hit you much harder.

Re: Richard Colless re Ross Lyon
Exactly right the way he puts it.
Why would any new coach 'prefer' a clause where he only gets 6 months compensation if sacked rather than the full contract. Clubs terms.
So Lyon left for a contract on his terms, or at the very least, fair terms.
Very simple - No clause, no opportunity for Lyon to leave with a year remaining.
Board's fault.

Re: Richard Colless re Ross Lyon
I still think the club wasn't overly pleased with Lyon and wasn't too concerned with losing him.
He'd coached fairly well, but was hugely deficient in key areas on-field and also had a negative impact off-field.
He'd run his race, and left some major damage in his wake.

Re: Richard Colless re Ross Lyon
I don't think that Lyon could have done anything with the squad he left behind.
If anything, we'd probably be worse off as the rebuild most likely wouldn't have started for another few years under him.
If history is anything to go by, he'd have still been tipping up with rejects and setting us further and further back in the long run.

Pointless to muse what Ross could of done if he'd stayed.
That weird final v the swans, where he played guys in strange positions, retired everyone, and declared it the end of an era was always gong to be his last game.
He'd already checked out, matters not what he may or may not say happened in the lead up or shortly after.

it was in the the paper the other day that Lyon was either going to be Bob Rose (didn't win win but kept getting close) or Malcolm blight (after a number of losses, won 2).

Bob Rose used to lead (until 2013gf) in the GF's contested without a win.Enrico_Misso wrote:Suggest you Google "Bob Rose"whiskers3614 wrote:Getting back to Lyon, can anybody tell me what is the record for consecutive finals series contested without a flag?
However his losses were well spaced and he also had years of missing finals.

Exactly, Spinner. Lyon would've adjusted, I'm sure. Again, it shows what an incompetent clown Nettlefold was/is.Spinner wrote:Johnny Member wrote:I still think the club wasn't overly pleased with Lyon and wasn't too concerned with losing him.

Re: Richard Colless re Ross Lyon
Ross had run our list down by not playing kids. We won't know if he had a rebuild in him because he didn't do one. Like all good coaches he has an almost messiah like aura now. He has been very successful compared to a guy like Malthouse who has coached for a long time to get a handful of GF games. Ross has been around for a very short time and climbed the mountain 3times or 4 if you count our dual game. Freo have a structure around ross to limit his list destruction so he might get better.
If he keeps getting there one day he will jump the last hurdle.

Bad groins. Couldnt train properly and always pulled up sore after games. In the seconds he could come off more because there was no real pressure to win.
