I have a saying about footy players " a good country kid is always better than a good city kid ".
Kew comets/Scotch College = too soft . I dont care that he has 'nice parents'.
We should have gone Scharenberg.
Going on your theory both Judd and Ball must be too soft as well as they were from private schools and good city clubs.
Have seen Billings play on a number of occasions and he is not soft and if he stays injury free will be a gun. First game in terrible conditions, give the kid a chance for crying out loud.
Con, I note that you have been concentrating on the fact that country kids punch above their weight and what constitutes a player from the city in particular stating about the Peninsula School due to me raising Tom Curren.
I see you are ignoring the fact that the player you said we should have drafted was also a city kid and a private school kid or does that only apply to Victorians a bit like you change our definition of city to suite your arguments.
Saying that a good country kid wil always beat a good city kid is an opinion, but saying what you said about Billngs was unbelievable and this is what I am questioning. If you said you think Billings is soft that would be your opinion but what you have done is stated that "Kew Commets / Scotch College = soft and what the hell does having nice parents have to do with anything?
So what are you saying that all city footballers are soft? Kew Commet footballers are soft? Scotch college footballers are soft? Private School Footballers are soft? To me it appears that you believe the stereotype of private school footballers as being well spoken from affluent backgrounds and therefore soft.
If it is all city players then you have no idea whatsoever,if it is Kew Commet footballers then the various recruiting officers would appear to disagree with you as the Kew Commets provided three draftees this year including two of the top ten, Billings, McDonald and Kennedy - Harris. If it is Scotch College then I suggest you familiarize yourselve with some of Campbell Browns work and if it is privare school footballers the the Scott twins so hello as well as Luke Ball and numerous others.
You are basing your view on one NAB cup game where the kid was a sub and only played 40% game time, I think the recruiters may have seen him a bit more than you over the last three years and judged him to be the third best player available.
Given that Scharenburg must also be soft under your definitions as he is a boy who attended Immanuel Lutheran College who was the good country player you would have drafted as thoughts of the recruiing officers at this years draft unfortunately appears be be the polar opposite of your thoughts.
Tom Boyd - City boy / Lutheran College boy
Josh Kelly city boy/ Brighton Grammar
Jack Billings city boy/ scotch college
Marcus Bontempelli city boy / Marcellin College
Kade K Launceston
Matthew Scharenberg city boy / Immanuel College
James Aish city boy/ private school boy
Luke McDonald city boy / Trinty college
Christain Salem city boy / Brighton Grammar
Nathan Freeman city boy / Haileybury College
It would appear the men paid to recruit the players have no problems with city players and private school players.
As for the city/ country definition there is no way that your definition stacks up, how somewhere like Chelsea can be country does not make sense as for The Peninsula School it is not country does to have an 035 phone number is part of metropolitan Melbourne.
A champion team will always beat a team of champions.

Vigorous defence Junior. Must have really pushed your buttons.
What are you the Marketing Manager for the private school association ? How sad.
Firstly none of those draftees have had a kick yet.
Secondly with the urbanisation of Australian cities then 'country players' will become less and less
Obviously Chelsea is no longer country but when Lethal grew up on the 60s it was where people took holidays - like say dromana is now.
Campbell Brown is an exception because of his dad.
The Scott boys were also a special case for other reasons and went to St Kevs - along with their partner in crie Syephen Powell. I played footy against those lads.
Add to that the new trend of putting country kids on scholarships - eg BJ and Cyril.
Josh Kelly is also probably a special case as his dad was a gun footballer.
I have absolutely no idea about Christian Salems background so comment there.
But nothing you have said changes my position. Per capita there are more gun dal players from county areas. This is just in disputable.
And where are people are going to get over their lover boy Luke Ball. He's a good player but there are so many better players out there than him. The private school lobby is simply in love with the bloke. It's pathetic.
The peninsula school is down past mt Eliza and towards mornington - that's country . It certainly ain't city.
Not even zone 3 in the old days.
And the catholic schools you mentioned above also dont count in my theory.

Con as you said none of the boys he mentioned have had a kick yet but you have decided Billings isnt as good as another player because he is from the city and the other player isnt even though he is. Peninsula school is a metropolition school however you spin it. Jobe Watson goes ok. Chris Judd is handy. lenny Hayes isnt bad. Rooy gets kick occasionly.
Nothing needs to change your mind about country and city. What does need to change is you deciding one player will be better than another player because of a half of footy and the fact he is a city boy. Never heard so much crap in my life. Its clearly the funniest thing you have posted. By the way what has Leigh Matthews of 45 years ago got to do with today?

Jeezus Con, you talk more crap than the rest of this place combined. And that's saying something, as this place churns enough crap to put Werribee out of business.
You're writing off a number three draft pick after a half of footy, based on where he was raised?
You just set a new high, in low.
Maybe we can get Joey to re-hire those performers and they can cobble together some kind of "Mental Midgets" performance piece in your honour.
I've been on this forum for about a decade and you have now the unenviable honour of having created the most turgid piece of waffle ever written on here........
Well done. Not only did you create the most glaringly unintelligent hypothesis ever to see the light of day, but you went that "extra mile" that sets apart true idiocy from the humdrum world of mere stupidity. As the rest of our little community put forth their exceedingly obvious examples of great players that shoot truck sized holes in your mind-numbingly ridiculous theory, your countered by offering such luminary insights as "He clearly doesn't count because of where his dad was raised !!".....
I am truly relieved to discover that, despite my passion for the game, I was never a great footballer during my playing days due to the fact that my father was raised in England - I thought it was because I was a relatively uncoordinated gumby !!!!

Still waiting for you to nominate the country footballer that we should have drafted.
For the record my nephew is involved with the Geelong Falcons program via Cobden so I have no bias towards country or metro. An ex team mate and school mate runs the Nth Ballarat program and I wish him every success. Not commenting on per capita who has the better players.
Please explain why Billings is soft as I have seen him play plenty of times and it is not the case. Because both country, outer metro and country produce a mixture of soft and hard players.
But once again you change the rules, catholic kids do not count, former players sons are special rules none of the other players count as they have not had a kick.
If there is a bias it is you against city kids not me against country kids and I am certainly no spokesman for private schools just stating the facts of the last draft.

My family used to holiday in Dromana and Rosebud in the 60's.
Chelsea was a suburb of Melbourne we used to pass on the Nepean Highway on the way to Frankston.
Like Edithvale, Aspendale, Carrum, Seaford.
We didn't consider any of that 'country' - just the southern suburbs of Melbourne.

As some one that is from the city and soft, I classify Moorabin and beyond country. Waverley had trees and mud so was country. My current rule of thumb is if you can't get coffee of a high standard it is a barbaric backwood and is therefore the country. Anywhere outside Sydney and Melbourne inner metro is country.

Re: The 5th Quarter
First of all, any footballer on an AFL list is not soft.
For some internet hero nobody to declare any AFL footballer soft shows their level of ignorance and inadequacy and embarrassment at their own ineptitude.
In saying that, I didn't see anything of Billing but happy to declare him the softest footballer ever to play AFL
Seriously, to declare Billings as soft, is purely one of the saddest things I have read on here by someone trying to bignote themselves and showing their total inferiority complex

Sorry Loris you may have to explain to a few of our readers was the Billings method us. And how it's highly recommended by the Roman Catholic Church, because it's such an unmitigated failure.

Sure about that ? especially when Frankston was and is serviced by the CFA not the MFB and I think car owners got cheaper car registration fee because it was outside of Melbourne.
