Im sure they would have needed to book it a year ago. Not sure practice matches have much weight over making heaps of money.

Geelong FC will make money, we will not. This is the sort of commercial decision we as supporters should be informed about as to what benefit is there for our club playing in a land far far away .

Has actually turned out to be a great night for footy! Glad we've picked up the intensity since the first quarter. Loving seeing the young guys get a run!

Re: Stadium under water
Footy is an indoor game.
Why aren't we playing at Docklands?
Why aren't we playing at Docklands?
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

It is! But I wasn't.White Winmar wrote:About to? If we played at the home ground of both competing teams we could simply close the roof. Problem solved. But it's fun being contrary, just for the sake of it, isn't it?bergholt wrote:It's about to start pissing down in Melbourne, according to the radar, so if we were playing outdoors here it wouldn't be much better.White Winmar wrote:Again it begs the question as to why we have to play in this shithole, soon to be ghost town.
Why would anyone want with a financial stake want this game played at Docklands? We lose money if we get less than 30k there. This game would have got less than 10k. It might not come out of our pocket but I'm pretty sure the AFL wouldn't be happy opening up a massive stadium just to lose $100k+.

Re: Stadium under water
Great irony there… The AFL are happy to send clubs to play at Etihad every single week to make huge losses, but they won't do it if they have to pick up the tab.bergholt wrote:I'm pretty sure the AFL wouldn't be happy opening up a massive stadium just to lose $100k+.

Pretty hard when there is a concert there.
Re: Stadium under water
Fair point, but there's a huge difference between a crowd of 22k for a home and away game, and a crowd of 7k for a preseason game.dragit wrote:Great irony there… The AFL are happy to send clubs to play at Etihad every single week to make huge losses, but they won't do it if they have to pick up the tab.bergholt wrote:I'm pretty sure the AFL wouldn't be happy opening up a massive stadium just to lose $100k+.

Re: Stadium under water
I don't think Etihad was booked for the whole week though, we could have easily played Tuesday or Thursday.plugger66 wrote:dragit wrote:Great irony there… The AFL are happy to send clubs to play at Etihad every single week to make huge losses, but they won't do it if they have to pick up the tab.bergholt wrote:I'm pretty sure the AFL wouldn't be happy opening up a massive stadium just to lose $100k+.

The concert wasn't the problem, the stadium deal is obviously just cost prohibitive.
I wonder what the overheads are like to house only 7,000 fans... Surely ticket sales, parking & catering revenue could more than cover it?
We'll also benefit from the event/concert revenue the sooner the AFL own Etihad.

They'll probably slug both sides extra money on the electricity bill and use of the gumboots on ground staff whilst the mopped up after the storm.
