A gem from the bargain bin?
Just watched the intra club game on the club website. Eli Templeton - very interesting. Looked the part - quick, with endurance and good skills. I then checked the phantom drafts to see what the opinion was on him. Well, most put him in the 30 to 35 range, with one predicting him being selected in the low 20s. He also ranked very highly in the draft camp testing. Interesting that he had to wait until the rookie draft.
Fingers crossed we have picked up another bargain in the vein of Austinn Jones and Leigh Montagna.
Did any of you on this forum have him in your sights prior to the draft?

Re: A gem from the bargain bin?
More recently we have acquired Gears and Tom Curren from the bargain bin. I hope we can continue to successfully raid the bin.
Re: A gem from the bargain bin?
There was a lot of fanfare and media hype about Eli pre-draft. Listening to draft watchers such as Calum Twomey, Shifter and Emma Quayle and going off phantom drafts, conservatively speaking, Eli was seen as a certain top 40 draftee. He's got the talent so not completely sure why he was overlooked in the main draft. There were rumours that he was a bit arrogant and didn't interview well but who knows?

To me the entire interview process is laughable.Old Mate wrote:There was a lot of fanfare and media hype about Eli pre-draft. The reason for this is what, 17-18 year old boys are getting interviewed?
Spare me...

Is it just me or does he remind anyone of Gary Ablett circa 2003? I don't know whether it's the posture or kicking style or something else ... can't put my finger on it.

Re: A gem from the bargain bin?
Certainly a bargain at Rookie time... Should have been drafted .... Was rated highly enough
At the intraclub he stood out with his pace and smarts
Jarryn Geary was an absolute bargain, a TAC cup B&F going late in the rookie?! Steven was a bargain and smart selection.

Michael Barnes won a TAC cup B&F and there are plenty of Morrish Medal winners who didnt get drafted. Its all very easy in hindsight. Hopefully Templeton will kick on. Interclubs mean jack though as half maybe good and half not so good but we would never right off those who werent so good.

I think it"s just a case of a club trying to learn a little bit extra about a prospect...The Redeemer wrote:To me the entire interview process is laughable.Old Mate wrote:There was a lot of fanfare and media hype about Eli pre-draft. From a football sense, there's a couple of hundred prospects many of which are more or less of the same standard. So it's that extra bit of info to split them

Re: A gem from the bargain bin?
Correct. Eight of the last nine haven't amounted to anything at AFL level - most were never even drafted. I don't think TAC Cup B&Fs are much of a measure of anything.plugger66 wrote:Michael Barnes won a TAC cup B&F and there are plenty of Morrish Medal winners who didnt get drafted.

Thats why I was hoping he didnt remind you of him.
Re: A gem from the bargain bin?
Couple of points
Never mention Morrish Medal?
But on that
Another, Half of those or more were actually drafted... 8 became good players
Some were stars? Brown, Hayes, Kruzer, Heppell
Of the rest
All of which became excellent State League footballer, in some cases among the best at that level... To say they were duds, uninspiring is absolutely ridiculous... All had different circumstances
Some a bit slow for AFL, Some Injury, Some too small for AFL..
But all could play footy... And well
It was just a point attempted to be debated for the sake of it? But even then with weak language and no actual point.... My point was Jarryn Geary was a bargain.... Fair point IMO, he was a late rookie selection.... And he will play 150 games and is in the leadership group?! the fact he was a TAC Cup B&F which is just that... A fact! In the same team as Selwood... Albeit Joel missed games.
WAS IT EVER MENTIONED THAT BECAUSE HE WON A JUNIOR B&F HE SHOULD BE A LEAGUE FOOTBALLER...
it was pointed out.

Anyone without any footy knowledge could see he was a bargin. You mentioned B&F winner as if it meant something. I think people were just pointing out it means jack unless you are hindsighting.
