Billings out until Christmas

Post: # 1424158Post supersaints »

From football nation

ST KILDA can’t take a trick with its first pick in the most recent AFL draft – Jack Billings – suffering a quad injury while training.
Billings will be sidelined for the rest of the year according to coach Alan Richardson.
“Unfortunately Jack Billings has given his quad a little bit of a tweak today but it is going to be a fairly demanding campaign and we need the blokes to get the work in their legs,” Richardson told saints.com.au.
“He is probably not going to be back kicking until after Christmas but he will still be able to do a fair bit of the load work.”
The Saints have been buoyed by the new coach Richardson since he took over from Scott Watters last month

.... Great start!

But I guess at least he means 2013.....
Pity he will miss his first full AFL Pre- season,

Can still do stationary ball work, upper body weights and give so e more rest to his troublesome knee.... Not a huge blow.

Luke Ball wasn't fit for his first year.

Not expecting too much from Billings, even less now he has an interrupted first pre season

Lance or James??

Billings and our other two top picks..say 3-6 games this year.

Meanwhile the guys that have been in the system fora bit get developed more with senior games: Newnes, Curren, Saunders, Ross, Milera.....plus Savage not to mention Wright and Murdoch.

Fortunately, it looks like it's only a temporary set back. When OP said "the rest of the year" I feared it meant 2014.

I'd imagine it'd be fairly difficult to do serious damage to a quadricep muscle.

Just reflecting on star new recruits, Roo was sidelined for pretty much the whole year in 2001.

Yes, unless he undergoes a heart transplant over the pre-season. A shame because he obviously has plenty of ability.

Nicky Winmar got a hernia in his first pre-season. Didn't stop him from absolutely starring when the season started.

Are you saying Milera is undeserving of that sort of criticism?

Was darn lucky to get another crack in our squad after 2013. IMO, he hasn't displayed the right gumption to warrant playing at the elite level. Of course I would like to see him make me eat me words. But until then...

Only a minor set back, will miss 2-3 weeks of HARD leg work. Will still be able to do hiking etc. The players get between xmas and New Year off club training anyhow. Plenty of other training can be done on upper body, etc.

minor hiccup only, move on....

look...i think all afl footballers take on huge risks to the personal safety everytime they take the field......but it is also true that i have seem milera avoid body contact in a body contact sport...twice in one game ...which was pretty ordinary in itself......he doesn't like the tough stuff ...imho that is....

Billings has a very long history of not stringing games together.
Will need to be nursed through football very carefully. His body is suspect to the rigours of the game.

He's just a young'un. Once he builds his body up will be OK

It can't be a very long history. He's only 18.

Exactly. And if what St Ig has said is true he wouldn't be a top 3 pick.

There is no doubt he is somewhat of an injury risk, but most kids get injured as they ramp up their workloads from 16-20, I wouldn't say he is suspect though. You could say Dunstan has had hip surgery and lower legs issues, Acres has got/had shoulder problems, its not that uncommon. I guess the concern with Billings is that he didn't play much this year and when he did he wasn't 100%, so if anything, it's not a shock to see something get a little twinge when he is on such a huge running camp when he hasn't yet built up a motor.

Wish we'd picked up a player at no.2 with a history of bad shoulders in 2001.

We'd have 3-4 more premierships by now. 8-)
