Why? What's so horrible about taking 32mg of Methyl Synephrine on game day that would require the maximum sentence? I would have thought the maximum punishment would be reserved for exceptional circumstances. I question why Saad deserves anything more than a slap on the wrist for what he did. As far as I can tell, the answer is because ASADA doesn't do slaps on the wrist. They go after everybody as hard as they can. I don't understand why. We don't follow a sport with a long history of drug cheating.

Even if we accept that Saad has been very naughty and needs a severe punishment, an 18-month sentence makes the most sense. A full 2-year ban means that he'll miss in excess of 2 years, which becomes a cruel and unusual punishment for a first time offender. I cannot see why 18-months would be unacceptable from ASADA's perspective.

I don't think players care about minor infractions. Roo's happy to have his photo taken with Von Miller. Most fans only care as far as it advantages their team. I really question why we want or need ASADA around the sport. Like any arm of WADA, they seem very capable of punishing the careless and incapable of catching those with malicious intent. I see no reason why the AFL shouldn't be able to handle this stuff in house.

I agree Vacuous space. The proportion of punishment to 'the crime' seems arbitrary and motivated on raising this organisation's profile in the minds of the general public. From the beginning i have thought this arseada clique a mickey mouse organisation. Grandstanding, seeking out the easy targets and doing their level best to present themselves above the general view of natural justice. Not surprised at their continued efforts at attention grabbing. And on the essendon issue they'll melt away from a serious punishment in this 'too legally challenging' case.

Exactly, what does the scale look like in terms of punishment vs infringement?

mild stimulants/diuretics all the way through to EPO/steroids… surely they need to be classified accordingly.

USADA defo used positive tests as evidence...

Yes, the Essendon case is completely different. What they did is clearly worse. Positive tests are irrelavant. ASADA emphasise this all the time. Armstrong was not busted due to positive tests.

All this make it up today organisation and make it up again tomorrow if we didn't get what we thought we wanted today is pathetic indeed.

I'm still amazed Saad has already received more than a year. It is hard to take this organisation seriously when there is an absence of clear and proportional reprimand. Arseada are operating in a world where on-going syringe taking of a whole range of questionable ingredients including illegally imported ingredients are still not cause for reprimand for a entire club - amazing.
No doubt because the legal stand-off and compromised stance of the afl (who many regard as being cognizant of the syringe-driven cocktail program at ess) will drag on beyond 2014 and thereby facilitate the dons to continue business as usual.

During all this Arseada scramble to get in the media headlines once again to pin their highest reprimand on one single afl player he was very foolish or unable to think through his actions while taking a gulp of his mate's milk-bar purchased drink.
2 years , even 18 monthes - Really?

Now l understand what the term 'GET A LIFE' may mean.
