One of the big problems during that period was the party culture at the club amongst the Saints players, and lack of respect for the club and coach. The Carlton imports were clearly a cut above in skills and talent, and were dragged down to the Saints level. Just a sad period for the club, though out of it all Ken Sheldon had a crack at coaching and got us into the finals.

Spert, our performance improved under Sheldon and we made the final for the first time in over 20 years.

Sheldon had never coached a side period?!.... Point being

Pagan had coached successfully in the VFA at senior level.... And of course Under 19s with an 80% win/loss ratio... and numerous Grand finals on the trot.

He hadn't coached at senior level when North hired him either... Had he?

The rest got recruited because they were better than anyone else we had.

As I recall (and I may be wrong) clubs had no limit to the amount of players they could have on a list, and with Carltons money they just built up more and more players. At that time I think the Carlton seconds may have beaten our senior team - so their rejects stepped straight into our firsts.

We'd also had some luck with other "surplus" players - Rex Hunt and Max Crow, so it may have been a case of just taking what we could get.

Yeah Totally agree. These were the 3 that provided the real value to the Saints sides at the time. We were searching for a real ruckman and WOW arrived and he certainly stood up. If my memory is correct I think McConville came to the Club as a key forward but ended up playing a lot of games across Half Back for us.

Hard to imagine Parkin or Walls ever wanting to coach St Kilda.

Pagan's senior coaching career didn't start until 1993. Would have been an incredibly bold move to appoint him in 1989.

Saying that it was a sad period for the club when we got into the finals for the first time since 1972 doesn't really make any sense.

It wasn't sad. It was a great time for the club and I have no idea what your on about.

Respect for the club? Respect for the coach?
