Who are you writing too. I think most have him in the top 5. just because many or most dont have him number one like you then you feel the need to tell us his history. i think most know it but most see plugger as a better player. Its an opinion. Who is underating him by haing him top 5 of over 1000 players in out history. Maybe you are overating him but clearly having him at one.

I can only go on his record..... He had a more decorated career at StK than Plugger...... Taking Pluggers Sydney Career into it... It would be line ball IMO ....... But that was at Sydney?
If we were going their best individual performances... Lockett had many.... But so did Harves... Including a three Goal 46 possession game... Which would be equal to anything Tony did
Best years 91/92 for Tony.... 97/98 For Robert... Can't split that... In fact Robert won the B&F in 92
Best Careers
Put it this way
Put Pluggers 189 games against Bangers first 190... Perhaps Tony, maybe?
Then Rob played another 194 on top of that....
I can't get past the fact he played twice as many games.... Three times more than Baldock and Stewart....
Plugger Lockett is probably the reason I barrack for StK..... But for overall influence at the club.... Rob Harvey is a Giant and what he achieved is Tendulker like....
Locket more like Lara or Viv

Can never be based on games played other wise people would suggest baldock wasnt around long enough. Plugger changed the way people followed our club. Going from end to end just to watch him close up. Havey is a champion but so is Lockett. He did things that i havent seen other players do.

Re: my alltime top 5
I asked my Dad this question. He passed away a couple of years ago, but would have been 90 this year. I know he rated Ian Stewart as the best, followed by Darrell Baldock, Verdun Howell, Plugger, Harvey and Lenny Hayes.
I asked him who he thought was the toughest Saint and he replied, that easy, it is Eric Guy. Also rated Big Carl and Cowboy for their toughness. Dad was a tough bloke and he loved the enforcer role that big Carl played, looking after teammates . He also said Carl's first game performance was the best he had ever seen, said he ran from one end of the ground to the other like a gazelle and was unstoppable, even by the great Ronald Dale Barassi.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

As many would argue Plugger's best was no better than Coleman's or Hudson's.
Just went for much longer.

oh the memories your story brings back...i was at that game ..in the rooms before and after with my dad....ian drake had a grin from ear to ear and he never smiled.....carl was best on ground by a long way...pretty good from a 17 year old...i remember him patting barrass on the head.......yeas later i mentioned that to barrassi ...he said that it never happened.....i thought at the time he was lying...but now i realise he had just forgotten....along with many other things i believe....
and yes...eric guy was the toughest player i ever saw....followed by morrow.......carl was all pointy elbows .. barry pascoe was really tough, as was sarau and jimmy o'dea.....cowboy a bit of a thug but he could play....mad dog muir was...well....mad.....of the more recent players. the toughest by a long shot was stephen powell....
ian stewart was the ultimate footballer...didn't have a weakness......beautiful kick...as was the doc.....verdon howell was easily our best full back....but i wouldn't rate him in my top 5.....
...all in all your dad was a very good judge of a footballer.....
big carl just made everyone else walk taller by his mere presence on the ground......
bit surprised more don't rate roo higher........

Was Plugger the best FF?
Debate
Hudson.... Until injury kicked 100 5 years in a row.... Went to Tassie and on one leg kicked nearly 200... Back to the VFL fat and kicked another Ton
Coleman.... Best was possibly the best
Ablett only played FF for 5 years... 3 colemans/3Tons
Dunstall 3 club B&Fs in a gun team... 4 colemans
Pratt had extraordinary numbers.... Coventry amazing consistency
I personally would rate Locket 1.... Over the big two... Because of longevity.... Sustained excellence beats excellence

Re: my alltime top 5
Plugger rates higher than other full forwards for me, simply because he played a lot in lesser teams. Guys like Dunstall and Ablett would not have played as well in s*** teams IMHO. I'd put Hudson in that bracket too.
But it always amazes me the stat about Hudson's 1970 season: he kicked 143 goals and Dawkthorn didn't make the finals...

Re: my alltime top 5
Hudson kicked goals for fun....
Ablett and Dunstall were great players and then some.... Regardless of team.
The weak team theory is a bit like Murali and Hadlee bein in weak teams taking wickets.... If you've got no one stealing the off you your going to have a greater opportunity...
Dunstall was in a forward line consisting of Brereton, Hall, Buckenara, Morrissy, Hudson
Ablett was with Stoneham, Brownless, Lindner, Excell, Scott

No one has to get the ball to a bowler in a cricket side. In 84,85 and 86 we were worse than melbourne is now. Plugger had to basically mark the ball when out of position because the kicking was so poor and the side was pathetic. As soon as we became slightly competative he kicked 100 goals. I think Id rather the ball come down all the time and compete with other stars than it hardly come down at all and when it did the delivery was ordinary to say the least.

Gee Stinger, you mentioned some names I had forgotten too. Jimmy O'Dea, Jeff Sarau, Pascoe, great memories. I have sent you a PM.stinger wrote:happy feet wrote:I asked my Dad this question. Hudson and Coleman played in great sides, though, not the cellar-dwellar Saints of the 1980s.whiskers3614 wrote:Plugger's best was no better than Coleman's or Hudson's.
Hawthorn tailored a special game plan to take full advantage of Hudson's freakishness, putting virtually everyone on the ball and leaving him one out against the unfortunate fullback.
The centre diamond (later square) was introduced to stop this tactic.
In similar circumstances, at his peak and playing for one of the best teams going around, I could see Lockett kicking 180-200 in a season. One on one no-one really had an answer to him.
Coleman is well before my time but he was obviously pretty good.

Re: my alltime top 5
It is telling that only one full forward has won a Brownlow imo.
It's not as if Lockett, even early in his career, was ever the umpire's pet.
Such was his dominance of matches, the umpires would have looked stupid if they hadn't given him the votes.
