Re: Ross Tungatulum story
I still reckon we have an issue with indigenous players
Nicky Winmar, supremely talented and good career however a number of off-field issues regarding blow ups and walk outs
Xavier and Raph Clarke ----- never got their body right in 5+ years
Ross T - left for home after a season
Terry Milera - reportedly wanting to go home at the end of every season (speculative)
Andrew Lovett last 2 months with two off field incidents (though I wouldn't call this well known trouble maker a saints player)
Nicholaus Winmar - commitment issues and then cut suddenly
Seems our development of indigenous talent is an area in which we can improve

Re: Ross Tungatulum story
It is interesting because the Hawks hardly had an indigenous player at all in the 80s 90s 00s but now they have the most whereas we were pioneers (Narkle, Jeffrey, Muir) but we have dropped the ball a little in recent times. Hopefully Milera has a good year in 14.skeptic wrote:I still reckon we have an issue with indigenous players

This interview is sensational with Gilbert and Nicky. True legends .
Re: Ross Tungatulum story
If he was good enough he'd still be there.
Perhaps still at afl with someone else.
Perhaps Ledger should still be a saint?

One cannot question the club's ability to develop talent here even when particular strategies seem flawed
hey I guess it's just the recruitment... every single time... though that's miraculously fixed now, but for three years it was every single pick
also, players walking out on the club is not an issue... they pbly weren't good enough anyway

Re: Ross Tungatulum story
Playing footy at Sandy in the rain at TBBO would have been pretty mind blowing for a young guy from Tiwi. You can understand thefeeling of home sickness and he wouldn't have been given any guarantees that there was anything but years of the same thing. It was a shame because he was an excitement machine. A more delicate senior coach might have been able to offer a little more encouragement but it is what it is.

Yes I remember one from the days before the internet really got going.skeptic wrote:I still reckon we have an issue with indigenous players

Seems Nicky with a smashed shoulder got a little upset when he was abandoned by all the club personel out at Waverley , left to find his own way home unaided.
When it got into the press the club bagged him for being a wimp.
Yeah, this is the wimp who gave it to the racist Collingwood members grandstand at Victoria Park.
No wonder we didn't win a premiership in Nicky's era.
Now we have some coterie misandrist wanting the club to abandon Milne.

Re: Ross Tungatulum story
St.K. did indeed make a considerable contribution to including Indigenous players in afl footy.
Interesting observation of the hawks making indigenous players a real strength in their team's success.
St.Kilda have dropped the ball a bit but @ the same time were unlucky with Xavier getting cruelled withinjury.
Would love to see some Indigenous class back in the red, white and black soon.
Gilbert is pure gold on the Mangarook Footy show and Nicky is still withus which is comforting after his medical scare.
GO SAINTS!

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.

Re: Ross Tungatulum story
I'm trying to think back, has there been any successful indigenous Saints players since Nicky?
in addition to the above list, I remember
Sean Charles and Fred Campbell drafted and clearly not up to it
Gavin Mitchell I think? Was he indigenous? One trick pony.
Milera and TDL don't look like they'll make it though I'm hopeful for Terry...
It seems to me that we haven't been able to develop any of our indigenous recruits for nearly 15 years

Re: Ross Tungatulum story
Xavier Clarke played 105 games for us and Raph played 85.
I would count both of those as successful careers

Re: Ross Tungatulum story
Injury cruelled careers... Both of them
Ross could play.... Drafted too early.... He could not adapt at ha age.... And he was tiny
He is worth another shot IMO he has put on size and at least looks like a man now... He has lots of talent

Re: Ross Tungatulum story
Phil Narkle didn't last long at St Kilda.
Both Gilbert and Greg McAdam didn't have particularly lengthy tenures at Moorabbin either.
Reckon Raph Clarke did alright, considering he wasn't the most talented footballer. Xavier was the underachiever for mine.
Wish we had a Michael Long or Peter Matera back in the day.

History
The NEAFL was formed at the end of 2010 primarily as an amalgamation of the two major football leagues in Australia's north-east - the Queensland Australian Football League, based in South-East Queensland and including one team from the Northern Territory, and AFL Canberra, based around ACT, and including one team from Sydney (the reserves team of the AFL's Sydney Swans). The two leagues were converted to NEAFL conferences: the Northern Conference, serving Queensland and the Northern Territory, and the Eastern Conference, serving New South Wales and the ACT. Teams from the two conferences played matches against each other throughout the home-and-away season, before each conference staged a separate finals competition to determine both a northern premier and an eastern premier. The two premiers then played each other in the NEAFL Grand Final.
Two new teams also joined the competition for its inaugural season in 2011: the reserves team of Gold Coast Football Club (whose senior team joined the AFL in the same season); and the senior team of the Greater Western Sydney Football Club, which was preparing to join the AFL in 2012. These two clubs would have joined the QAFL and AFL Canberra respectively, had the NEAFL not been formed.
In 2012, two more clubs joined the Eastern Conference from the AFL Sydney competition: Sydney Hills and Sydney University. With Greater Western Sydney's senior team joining the AFL, its NEAFL side became a reserves team in partnership with, and under the name of the University of Western Sydney.
On 11 May 2013, the NEAFL Northern Conference played an interstate game against South Australia who represent the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). The game, played at the City Mazda Stadium in Adelaide resulted in a 21.14 (140) to 9.4 (58) win over the NEAFL North, with SA's higher fitness level the main difference between the two sides.
A major restructure of the league was announced for the 2014 season. Five clubs will leave the competition and the conference system will be abolished. Broadbeach, Labrador, Morningside and Mt. Gravatt will join a re-constructed Queensland Australian Football League, while Tuggeranong will go back to the AFL Canberra Division One competition.[2] The possibility of a North Queensland side entering the competition for 2014 was considered but ruled out.[3]
