Re: The Great Nicky Winmar....Winmarverllous
Thanks. I hadn't seen this before. Nicky is a class act and Gilby is a terrific bloke. It was a great contrast with them both doing the interview. Gilbert being the outspoken one and Nicky being very philosophical.
Looking forward to the Idigenous Round next year and (hopefully) seeing the great man at the game against the Pies.
Interesting to note that Alan Richardson was playing for Collingwood back in Round 4, 1993.

Re: The Great Nicky Winmar....Winmarverllous
a couple of weks ago I picked up this book
http://www.newsouthbooks.com.au/books/black-and-proud/
I'm looking forward to reading it in the coming weeks.
http://www.newsouthbooks.com.au/books/black-and-proud/
It is one of Australia’s most iconic images. On 17 April 1993, the Indigenous AFL footballer Nicky Winmar stood up against racial abuse and made history. Facing the Collingwood crowd that had taunted him all day the St Kilda player pulled up his shirt, pointed to his chest and declared: ‘I’m black and I’m proud to be black’.
Published the next day, the photos of Winmar’s gesture sparked an intense debate that forced the AFL, the fans and the nation to confront their prejudices head-on.
Black and Proud takes us behind the searing image to the stories of those who made it happen – the Indigenous team-mates Nicky Winmar and Gilbert McAdam and the two photographers, Wayne Ludbey and John Feder. Bound by a love of the game, the four were brought together by acts of courage and vilification that show how far we have come and just how far we have to go.
I'm looking forward to reading it in the coming weeks.

Re: The Great Nicky Winmar....Winmarverllous
Great, thanks for that!
Just on a side note, as we all know, Winmar passed the no.7 guernsey onto Lenny Hayes. Thats 27 straight years from Winmar's debut in 1987 that have gone by, 27 seasons, all passed with just 2 players, Winmar & Hayes, being the custodians of the St.Kilda number 7 throughout. The no.7 guernsey is now the most famous st.kilda guersney behind no. 4, IMO.

My 2 favourite Saints of all time
Those highlights are just sensational. Gilly just carved them up.
The Pies were mongrels.

Re: The Great Nicky Winmar....Winmarverllous
When we made those 2 grand finals back in the day i was emotionally charged to hear that Nicky Winmar had made the trip over to be there for the Saints premiership he missed out on in 1997.
Hopefully Nicky gets this opportunity again and we can once again celebrate him with a premiership cup not too far away.
Nicky! Nicky! Nicky! Oi! Oi! Oi!
GO NICKY!
GO SAINTS!

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.

Re: The Great Nicky Winmar....Winmarverllous
Nicky made it over from WA to see the 2009 GF, courtesy of Neil Mitchell's plea to have him be a part of a Saints premiership. I found out he was sitting only a couple of bays away from where I was sitting at the MCG that day. Apparently he was mingling with all the Saints faithful in that area. Wish I had of had the opportunity to have greeted him that day. Oh well, perhaps next time, when we actually win the damn thing.Megamaguire wrote:When we made those 2 grand finals back in the day i was emotionally charged to hear that Nicky Winmar had made the trip over to be there for the Saints premiership he missed out on in 1997.

I got to give him a hug at half time! that and meeting Geoff Cunningham after the game made the loss vaguely bearable. Neil Elvis is my fave player of all time, an absolute freakish talent...Sainternist wrote:Nicky made it over from WA to see the 2009 GF, courtesy of Neil Mitchell's plea to have him be a part of a Saints premiership. Re: The Great Nicky Winmar....Winmarverllous
You lucky dog! I had to queue in the in the mens for the entire half time interval just to take a leak. That wouldn't have happened if St Kilda members were granted the Ponsford Stand (city end goals). How the bloody hell did those Sheepshafters get it when it's meant to be allocated for the home team's members? Still NOT happy, Jan! f****** Geelong... it was like everything was meant to go their way before the match even started.Harvey To Hayes wrote:I got to give him a hug at half time! that and meeting Geoff Cunningham after the game made the loss vaguely bearable.
