Re: my alltime top 5
Although you can't deny his talent or his inhuman stamina and the effort that he makes for his mates and the club, unfortunately his yips with his goal kicking would hold him back from no. 1 (imho). But that really is being picky.stinger wrote:i have always rated ian stewart and the doc as our two greatest players.....but with time you get to appreciate others....plugger for instance..

Oh Stinger, you are about to cop heaps when our resident expert sees this thread.
My 'best' list is
Doc - my favourite and best
Plugger - unparalleled by anybody else in his ability to draw a crowd
Harves - our best ever mid
Roo - revolutionised how CHF is played
Stewie - sublimely skilfull and courageous
We've forgotten, in this day of multiple midfielders having 30+ disposals in a game, how good Harves was when the game was played differently.
His ability to 'gut run' all day, and burn off his opposition when the opposition didn't have the ability to try and tag him with tandem players running on/off the bench , saw him as the premier midfielder of his time/type.

MM I have the same Top 5. I'd love to squeeze Cowboy in as well. Probably because of the number 18 I had on my back as a weaner, but he was larger than life.
I am still hurting from 71;
my gut churns thinking of 97;
2009 was agony,
2010a was a pleasure to watch only to be devastated by 2010 b.
It hurts barracking for the Saints

Got it in one for guys under 55 years of age. Plugger is the greatest player of have even seen. Just remember his first 3 games in 91 or his game against Carlton in 89 or the impossible win against the Swans in 94. No one could do what he did. Even in his first full 3 yeears we were worse than Mekbourne were this year and he kicked close to 70 goals in each season. A frwak and the only player I have seen where the crowd changed ends to watch him play. I would have Hayes ahead on Nicky though.

Re: my alltime top 5
Plugger has to be 1 by a mile.
Played in very ordinary teams. They would just bomb a muddy ball in the air in his general direction- plugger would have 5 blokes all over him and hed still win the ball and score a goal.
He was an absolute colossus and also deftly skilled, quick and agile.

Re: my alltime top 5
1. Plugger, only behind Ablett Snr as the best player I have seen.
2. Harvey, played like the everyready bunny just kept going and going.
3. Roo, his athletic ability as a true KPF is unparalleled.
4. Neil Elvis, The most sublimely skilled player I think I have ever witnessed and he had a bit of mongrel.
5. Barker, played in some very ordinary sides but was a great leader on and off field.

Re: my alltime top 5
Five most talented footballers to play in St Kilda colours who I have ever witnessed play in the flesh have been...
R. Harvey
N. Riewoldt
A. Lockett
N. Winmar
L. Hayes
How none of those players never played in a premiership team simply boggles the mind.
