It was Weller who won out, after impressing with his application over the past three weeks while training with the Saints.
"While Maverick is a much younger player than Darren, both would have complemented needs on our playing list and ultimately we felt that Maverick suited our needs in a more immediate capacity than Darren, having brought in Hickey last year and Longer this year," Pelchen said.
"We felt that we want to give them every opportunity to play at senior level consistently and hence why we made the decision we did
."
This is a smart club decision grounded in common sense to our current situation
It gives me hope
I fear had Watters stayed and had his way....Jolly would be on our list and his gravy train.

Would have gone cheap, we'd have an experienced ruckman to show the younger talls (Hickey, Longer and Stanley) the ropes and potentially he could have evolved into a ruck coach for us a la Steven King a few years back.
Interested to know the main reasons why we gave the option of picking him up a swerve. The most obvious reason would be that he wouldn't be a long term acquisition. Do we now have a youth policy going in full swing much like the Stan Alves era?
Discuss.
1/ Sorry if you want a coach...you hire a coach!
2/ We are not in finals tilt mode we do not need experienced players on our rookie list as back-ups = we are wasting a rookie spot for no reason
3/ We have Hickey, Longer. Stanley )all of whom can play comfortably as No 1 ruck), Pierce and the Rookie Holmes = as we are in rebuild mode that is ample
4/ If we had picked him up playing him at either the Saints or Sandy would have interfered with developing he young rucks that we do have.

Interesting to me that while The Age runs an article this morning detailing Jolly's criticism of Buckley including this quote:
''Just the excuses he gave me in that meeting were all bulls*** and that was the hardest thing to stomach, that he was a coward, really. We had a problem. He had an issue with me and I had an issue with him. And I'm not the only one. There's a lot of players there that are in that same boat" http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/d ... z2lsR2ZXWe
Yet the Herald Sun, which also runs an article on Jolly, relates nothing of his spat with Buckley.
Either The Age have a scoop or the suspicion that the HS is Eddy's mouthpiece has just grown
I think his manager killed his career when he came out and said something along the lines of Jolly wants to be #1 ruck and will play 18+ games for whoever takes him. That would've stunted the development of our kids, and it also showed he wasn't interested in being a mentor or a backup, he wanted it to be the Jolly.

Anyone who speaks like this about their past employment is bound to sooner or later be doing it about their new job. I am so glad we didn't take him as the negatives would certainly outweigh the positives.

Exactly coaches don't need to be on playing lists, clogging up a place and having their pay included in the salary cap.
Jolly at this point in time may be a better ruckman than all of our potential ruckmen but we should never give him a game.
Our primary purpose is to teach the young guys by giving them game time and responsibility.
Hire him only as a coach.

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.
Pretty clear that Pelchin and probably Richo don't want delisted old players at the end of their career for any reason- Jolly is past it by a long way.
Wrong forum.

Malthouse infected Watters with the disease of taking recycled players
that used to play for them in previous teams, who have no real prospects.
Like rummaging thru an op-shop for a cheap bargain.

Discussing where Jolly may end up Denham mentioned us but now said it would be Esssendon or nothing because "St Kilda stuffed up". Poor communications with his management following Watters departure apparently.
Maybe we just lost interst in him. Maybe Watters was the one pushing for him. Maybe Longer coming on board meant we no longer needed him? Who knows?
But if we "stuffed up" then I'm glad we "stuffed up". Like many others I didn't want him at Seaford.
Anyway, move on Denham
That was exactly how I thought. Wish someone would ring him tomorrow and ask if all other 17 clubs stuffed up or were all 18 smart enough to say no.
It was implied that we stuffed him around as we only told him last minute that we were not taking him.
It’s probably standard practice by clubs to keep selections under wraps as no one wants to give anything away.
Saad was also probably told at the last minute that he wasn't going to get picked up and he was a St Kilda player.
It's easier to go with we’re a rabble etc. etc…
