Here is where it gets messy. What if the bloke they want at 21 is who we always wanted at 18? Or what if Richo has followed say, Dumont, all year, and he is the one on Ports radar, if he firmly believes Dumont can take our midfield to the next level. Does he, as coach of an AFL side say, nah, you guys called dibs first and we agreed... All of this doesn't sit well with me.SuperDuper wrote:The issue with Port is clearly pick 21.... they wont want Richo telling us who they plan to pick at 21, as our 18/19 are just prior to that...
If he has any knowledge on pick 3 to share... then that does not affect Port.. So he will not be under a gag for that one....But there is no reason port would have done extensive research on pick 3 prospects

I do wonder what effect Richos intel has on our decisions if any. I dare say we were tight lipped not having a coach in place, and there is so much water to go under the bridge for 18/19 it's not like we will be in a position to decide. I just hope we don't go the tall option, we need three mids
Yep, I would think that Richardson comes complete with all Port Adelaide's research.
That won't be any use for our No 3 pick because Port will just have put a line through the top 10
But he may be able to cast light on Port's thinking for their first pick at 21 and hence provide input for our picks 18 & 19.
But I have to disagree with you on needing 3 midfielders.
We already have plenty of midfielders.
Unfortunately they are the mid fieliders you have when you don't mind losing.
What we need is 3 elite superstar midfielders, the sort who get more than 20 brownlow votes season after season.
We will probably only get the chance at one of them this draft.

Raph wasn't a total spud. But not wroth pick 8. Probably 18 and we would've got a fair return.ace wrote:Yep only one flaw in Thomas's management technique.Gershwin wrote:Grant Thomas certainly delegated that responsibility to his recruiting staff. He was a great Manager.

Common perception is that this is a midfielders draft, and next year is for the kpp's. I'd be shocked if we had 3 top 20 midfielders taken with our draft picks in the past 10 years. I can only see Gardiner or Apeness available at our picks this year and they are nowhere near the class as next years bunch of Lever, Goddard or McCartin etc.ace wrote:St Ick wrote:If Dees are interviewing him there is some truth to him sliding.

Pick 3 needs to be a star, pick 18/19 need to be either stars or not far off. Apeness or Gardiner (best of the rest kpp's) are not in that league.

Mc Carthy and Mitch Harvey are both very good and Marsh could be a really hard match up in that he's like a KPP that plays like a super fast small.
Re: Emma Quayle Draft Summary
Just my opinion, but McCarthy should be gone, as early as pick 7, if not, definitely won't get past Freo's pick 17. Harvey disappointed at champs and while I don't hate him, he shouldn't be a teens pick. Marsh is a project, fits our mould of fwds who can't kick straight, yes he has tricks, but its a massive risk and we can't take such huge risks, especially with (I keep harping on it) the quality of mids around our picks.gringo wrote:St Ick wrote: Common perception is that this is a midfielders draft, and next year is for the kpp's. The Harry Hindsights on here will have you believe that but Raph was rated in the top 10 of that draft. He was looking like being top 3 until he had an ordinary Champs & clocked someone.saintspremiers wrote:Raph wasn't a total spud. But not wroth pick 8. A players's junior career usually gets them an accurate draft position. What happens in their senior career has very little to do with where they're drafted.
BTW, I still believe Raph was played out of position for the vast majority of his career... He was a tall outside mid/ half forward but never got a decent run there.
On the OP- for mine it's Billings clearly at 3... KK & Aish a bit behind
18 is best available mid & 19 is Impey or Garlett.

Carlton might jump early on Mc Carthy but I think Freo is probably about right. Bulldogs aren't going to risk giving up Aish or Scharenberg for him though. Harvey would be pretty spot on at around 20 to 25 being one of the few key forwards available. I have heard Collingwood are very keen though. If we jumped on at 18 it wouldn't be a massive shock or anything.
Marsh is one that could go anywhere- he's unique. He would make a better big mid but would need to train up to it to get the engine. He's a bit like Wright, so fast he doesn't balance before kicking but wrighty has actually got better since coming into the afl system.

I agree he never found the right spot for himself. Wasn't suited to what we needed him to be.Animal Enclosure wrote:

Re: Emma Quayle Draft Summary
I have read several times that Billings was restricted by his injuries this year and that he has the potential to be the best player in the draft - that's good enough for me! Its about time we had some well considered luck with our drafting...

I have read that at least 5 players have the potential to be the best player in the draft. I hope we get te best and as it will probably be Billings I hope he ends up the best. We need probably another 3 or 4 close to best players in the next 2 to 3 drafts before we again go up the ladder.

Re: Emma Quayle Draft Summary
Can't see the issue with Richards knowledge of port's target in the draft. We have our targets. If available at 18,19 we'll pick them. We are hardly going to be swayed by port's target to change. Not only are our needs likely to differ, but to do so would mean we have more confidence in their recruiters than our own.

Re: Emma Quayle Draft Summary
The '03 draft was the worst ever, and of the next 70-odd selections, only 8 played more games than Raph Clarke.
So it was actually quite good drafting considering what was on offer.
The #1 pick from the 2003 draft in hindsight is clearly Sam Fisher (IMO he has had a better career than Cooney or H. Shaw).
I would argue that we ended up with 2 of the best 7 players from the '03 draft in Sam Fisher and Farren Ray...

Re: Emma Quayle Draft Summary
Have read enough about Billings to suggest he and Aish are line ball, and if you really want to play it safe you go with the local lad as you can bank on the Crows being in Aishs ear every year.
Ironically for pick 18 I hope we land Dumont and Dunstan. Inside mids who are clearance specialists. Exactly what we need - 2 lenny hayes types. SA's midfield played a huge part in their U18s championship , and these 2 blokes were a big part of that.
