If they have already decided which I believe they had before they sacked Watters, then they should just announce it and stop the charade. Either way they will cop crap from the likes of Caro the Horrible so they may as well just announce itWinnersOnly wrote:Does any one else think the club should just announce the coach and stop this charade? Despite all our current 'issues', if I was an astute wannabe coach (of which I'm neither )... talk about 'whatever it takes'..., I would be crawling over the proverbial broken glass to land the senior gig at the mighty Saintas!
Who would not want to be the 2018 AFL premiership coach!?!
It's there for the taking.
That is what we are offering.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Fair comment Mart, but whether peeps find it incongruous or not (bearing in mind my 'presser sentiments')...BigMart wrote:Don't confuse negatives with realism....
I really and realistically believe that we are assembling the list to win the 2018 flag.
If one was to coach, the first thing required is the list... and I firmly believe that that list, along with the all important list/cap management strategy to keep said list intact,
is being clinically assembled by the Pelican and team.
Tick and tick. Therefore, if I was an astute wannabe coach I'd be wanting to get my hands on that list.
No, the biggest coaching challenge at St Kilda, rightly or wrongly, but clearly... is the off-field politicking. (I mean come on, we are talking the Saintas here! )
Therefore, if I was an astute wannabe coach, I'd also be wanting to keep my hands on that list...,
therefore I'd be making plenty of discrete enquires around the traps, so as to make damn sure that I knew the 'lay of the land' at our 'House of Cards'.
Gotta' play ya right... right?

I hope we weren't paying a rookie $500k a year - assumed he was on a back ended contract.
choco is worth double him you'd think - so $600k is more than fair.

Offer 3 with the option of a 4th! Good compromise IMHO! (Not that it makes any difference with coaches contracts any more, Lyon was still contracted to the Saints when he left!)SemperFidelis wrote:chook23 wrote:

Can see The Saints offering him 4 years with the option of a 5th which would make him one of the longest serving coaches in our history with Lyon. Imagine that!

Re: Shortlist of 2 for new coach by Wednesday
Give the guy 5 years.
The way I see it, it will take 3 years to get the young blokes up and going. They are going to be a tough 3 years. If we get to the end of his contract and we've won 8 or 10 games in 3 years, how can the board give him an extension - the jungle drums will be beating them into submission.
If he gets 5 years, he can at least see some of the fruits of his labour. With a bunch of talented kids in their early 20's, Chocos 4th and 5th years should be more successful, and we'll be in a much better position to either extend Williams' tenure, or replace him.
Many would argue that the next 3 years are still going to be donwhill for us, no experienced senior coach is going to agree to wear that without some added security beyond.

Re: Shortlist of 2 for new coach by Wednesday
MARK Williams and St Kilda need to overcome one final hurdle for the Port Adelaide premiership coach to be appointed as the Saints' new senior coach.
Williams wants a five-year deal, but the Saints have baulked at the length of the contract he requires. St Kilda, which will pay him about $600,000 a year, favours a three-year offer.
As soon as both parties agree on the term of the new arrangement at the latest AFL club in crisis, Williams' appointment will become official, and that is expected within a week.
With a compromise between the parties expected, Williams will officially replace Scott Watters before next week's national draft.
Watters' shock axing last Friday week will be a major distraction to Richmond where Williams was to have entered the final season of an initial two-year contract as a development coach. The 2004 Port Adelaide premiership coach was lured to Punt Road after leaving Greater Western Sydney following the Giants' first season at the elite level. His departure followed GWS's failure to honour a promise to appoint him senior coach following Kevin Sheedy's recent retirement.
Despite being disadvantaged by losing the highly valued Williams from their staff, the Tigers will not stand in his way.
St Kilda is in turmoil and will start the new year with a new president, a yet-to-be-appointed chief executive, new senior coaching staff and a new high performance manager. Senior assistant coach Dean Laidley left late last month to join Carlton, while general manager of football operations Greg Hutchison was made redundant two months ago.
As well, forward Ahmed Saad faces being delisted by the club before he is sanctioned by the AFL anti-doping tribunal for taking a WADA-prohibited stimulant contained in an energy drink. Former Melbourne Storm chief executive Ron Gauci is a frontrunner for a similar role with either the Saints or Essendon, who both have vacant CEO positions.
An ongoing professional spat with St Kilda's head of football Chris Pelchen led to Watters' downfall.
Pelchen, who lost out on a power struggle with Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson and his then football manager Mark Evans at his previous club, won this political fight at St Kilda following an internal review of its football operations by former player and current director Andrew Thompson.
While the upheaval at Seaford should not affect their planning for next week's national draft on the Gold Coast, it could have a bearing on the outcome of the rookie draft on the last Wednesday of the month.
The Saints had promised to take former Melbourne, Sydney and Collingwood ruckman Darren Jolly, but there now appears to be some uncertainty regarding his status.
The dual-premiership big man was delisted by the Magpies last month after being overlooked for their finals campaign.
St Kilda will enter the national draft with selection No 3, 18 and 19 and appear certain to snap up Oakleigh teenage half-forward Jack Billings. He will be just the Saints' fourth top-10 draft selection since Brendon Goddard was taken at No 1 in 2002.
