Nothing to celebrate!
Those Grand Finals are nightmares.
Those Grand Finals are nightmares.
When Harvey played his first game in 1988, I was a 12yo wearing short pants and struggling with my readin', writin' and 'rithmetic in grade eight. Now, I'm a father of three and a retired AFL player. And he's still going. Amazing! - Michael Voss

K you say near enough is not good enough........................fair comment
the players DID NOT ACCEPT MEDIOCRITY........THEY BUSTED THEIR GUT AND FELL JUST SHORT
the players were right to be pissed the way he delivered the message at the BF
we may have been viewed that no flag was mediocre for that era but AGAIN the EFFORT by the players was NOT
To the coaches (assistants) he was not including them in the end ....................
going behind CEO back
Became the micro manager.............................supressed development of people in various roles......did not let them do their JOB
Very GLAD he (that type of coach/manager) is gone .................

Now that I have more than 140 characters Kel - I'm out of words! Though I must admit that I agree with most of what others have said on here, so maybe I don't have to add more...
Re: Do you think 09/10 should be celebrated?
I didn't take it as a personal attack.
He said the club had long accepted it, and it's truth.
Not just on field, but more tangible that night, in its behaviours.
Greg scolded, Nettlefold scolded, Scott scolded.
The entire tone of the night started as a playing group being put in the naughty corner.
It was an overall summation, one that rings true.

And maybe some forumites need to respect the decision the club has made re Watters for no doubt very sound reasons. You don't pay out someone half a mil unless you have no realistic alternative.Eastern wrote:I'm not sure we need to celebrate, but we can acknowledge the efforts of a lot of people during that time. Another word that can be added to this topic, in this context is RESPECT !!

What else do the older players have left if they cant "celebrate" the years of 09 and 10, as opposed to the 3 grand final days themselves which we would all agree were a nightmare. How would you like to be told your whole career was a waste of time.

Celebrate no respect yes. Why would you show a clown like Didak more respect than Hayes or a donkey like Dawes more than Riewoldt. Absolute you respect the efforts of the champions of your club and generate enthusiasm from what they acheived.

Re: Do you think 09/10 should be celebrated?
Of course we should celebrate '09 and '10.
In '09 we were the best team, but failed to win the GF.
In '10 we were far from the best team, but still nearly pulled it off.
This proposition has stuff all to do with why Watters was sacked.
And why the hell does anyone think we are owed an explanation of the reasons?
The board has made a decision in the best interests of the club and we will move on to a new future. That future looks very exciting with the list we are building.
Some people just like to read too much into everything and come up with conspiracy theories.
The club is made up of the board, the coaches and managers, the players, the members and then there are the supporters.
The board appoints the coaches and managers, who build a list of players to represent the club and hopefully become successful.
When it becomes clear that one of the coaches is not on the same page as the rest of the club, there is only one answer.
The board got it right.

Absolutely!!! Grand Finals are dam hard to make and we did it two years in a row. But for a toe poke, the lack of video camera confirmation for goals and the bounce of a ball we could have tripled our premiership tally. I will always be grateful to and proud of this group of players who took us on this journey.
Something I have found interesting in this whole Watters sacking saga is the attitude of the Herald Sun journalists. They have always taken any opportunity they could to have a dig at our club, usually making mountains out of molehills and running with it for weeks. But unanimously they have all agreed that the club had no option but to do what they did and that they did the right thing. Perhaps they know a lot more than we do and it sounds like they have known it for a while.

Re: Do you think 09/10 should be celebrated?
This…
No-one at our club was happy about being runners up 2 years running.
No-one is accepting mediocrity, it's a ridiculous and offensive premise.
Watters is gone because he could not work as part of a team dynamic, evidenced by every level at the club.
The idea that 2 players who could barely get their contracts renewed a year earlier are the masterminds behind the coach sacking because they felt disrespected is Tolkien-level fantasy.
Do you reckon the club, financially struggling, would really sack and payout $500,000 because Watters didn't respect 2 older players grand final losses?

Re: Do you think 09/10 should be celebrated?
Actually, I hadn't considered the fact that watters was part of the group that STOPPED our dream coming true. Surely he wouldn't have been cocky about that? If he has used that then well...dragit wrote: As pointed out, a cruel bounce was the difference between Watters being part of an AFL premiership and us…

Sorry I missed that. When did he win an AFL Premiership as the head coach?SainterK wrote:
How would we know as a club and supporter base, how to approach winning flags?
Scott did.

.
Most AFL coaches do nor work out... it is a tough gig. Watters was not up to it. He joins the majority.
From reports he would seem worst than most. Match day coaching I was certainly left bemused.
On the players. Do I think that they mutinied? No. I just believe that he aggravated most. It is not one or two that he did not gel with, but most. That to me indicates that the problem was not with the majority, but with the minority = the coach.
And besides even if there was a mutiny normally there is a Captain Bligh!!! The coach has to get the players on board.
Also do not forget that it is not simply just a matter of Watters and the playing group, but Watters and the assistant coaches and other club employees, and the Board.
What are the odds that one man alone was right? Not good.
Success at a lower level does not guarantee success at a higher level. If it did all coaches, and players, would make it in the AFL. Most do not.

At the end of the day does it really matter?...
What aspects of Watter's coaching are people actually crying they'll miss.
Nothing. No ones actually that fazed.
I appreciate it was still early days. And fair enough - but there wasn't much I thought was superb. I don't think it's a major loss nor was I calling for his head.

Ridiculous statement .SainterK wrote:Dunno, when did Ross?
You couldn't even raise this post without Ross Lyon.
He'll have a flag before SW for sure.
I've already celebrated those great years and am looking fwd to even
Greater things coming our way in the very near future, provided we attract the correct coach,
Watters was a dud, couldn't even see out his contract .
Can't believe anyone wants to keep him on after everything that's come out.
Good riddance. The club made the right choice IMO

Re: Do you think 09/10 should be celebrated?
I feel Watters probably told a few bigger name players that they were overrated, and wouldn't be part if his plans. No doubt in my mind that just like the Saints of old, too many at the club didn't want to hear the truth and of course the tail wags the dog at St K, so Watters got the flick. No doubt the club will want a coach who tells them what they want to hear. Watters was a respected coach and mentor of players in WA, highly regarded at the filth, yet comes to Seafod and is seen as a lunatic... Go figure
