Re: Roo To Remain Skipper!
Wished i watched these imaginary saints who didnt finish third last.
All these imaginary players so much better than Geary.
You dreamers should be ashamed of yourselves and should apologise to Jarryn for his last 7 years efforts.
Yeah you too p66.
You are such good mates with the players.
Tell Jarryn he is no good and all these other imaginary players are better than him.
No matter they never touch the actual ball.

Please ignore that last post from Con

Stop drinking that much during the week. Looks like this is the new topic. You will be bored of that one soon. And your fascination with me is now making me sick in the mouth.

Geary tries hard but is an average player so stop pretending he is an A-grader.
If you perform averagely for 7 years in your job, would you expect praise?

Yep and with the exception of one, they are all around the 30 year old mark, not sure how that would help provide leadership for the next decade.BigMart wrote:We have developed leaders

There's five..... All in the Leadership group as Saints
It is possible that in 2014 we could see some players emerge as future leaders and so the answer to this debate could be uncovered this time next year. I also think that it is possible we will see some positive improvements in the area of leadership in 2014 and especially the development of leadership amongst the young guys coming through. Ironically the perception of a void in leadership may provide motivation for a new group of players to put their hand up in 2014. Good on the club for engaging Bluestone Edge to come in and help improve this area of the club. Clearly management as identified a need and is addressing it. I'd call that good management.
And as I've said before I hope co-captaincy is something the club consider again as it would be a magnificent way to exploit Roo as a mentor to help develop our next captain and group of leaders and also it gives him the perfect opportunity to pass on the culture that he and our famous core of players started a decade ago. Maybe he can get this next core group to adopt the same pact they made to each other back then and call it "unfinished business".

No its not on. Curren will not be Captain in a years time. Rooy again maybe, if not who knows. If Jack could improve his public speaking. Jack certainly should now be the face of the club with that cheeky smile.
Re: Roo To Remain Skipper!
The Rotating captaincy model that Grant Thomas introduced would be perfect for St Kilda now. With no obvious leaders waiting in the wings why not 'develop' the new guys? Ideally, Jack Steven would be captain for 2014. This would give him a taste and more importantly would fast track his leadership skills.
Unfortunately there is no way Watters would even contemplate the possibility of the above. He is a coach with no flair and will just do the conventional thing and reinstate Rooey. If only we had an innovative coach like Thomas used to be. The only innovations I have seen Watters introduce is that stupid circle and anything Western Australian.

Jack isnt ready to coach Lorne. he needs plenty of work. A player can be in the leadership group and probably get nearly as much benefit as putting pressure on him, when not ready, to be a skipper.

Dont the coaches name the Leadership group and then the players vote on captain from that group?
I might have imagined that

Re: Roo To Remain Skipper!
Con is right.
Pies- Nick Maxwell, average player, not a superstar, but they must think he is a great leader.
Cats- past captain Tom Harley who revealed that he questioned their choice of him as he was a battler.

Re: Roo To Remain Skipper!
i think footy and this generation have mved past the old days of the captain needed to steer the ship .. these days each player is their own captain , they draw inspiration and effort from themselves and dont really need a figure head to tell them or show them what they need to do on feild ... the new eneration dont sit back and reveer older players its not like in harves generation where he was just that quiet guy in the corner doing as he was told .. players question things they want to find out things thier own way they want to be in charge of themselves ...
to me the captain only tosses the coin and does the media stuff , if a player needs someone else to lead by example to push themselves that bit harder then they shouldnt be playing professional level footy ..

Con its only one season away. He is probably no hope of even being in the leadership group next year so I would think he is no hope of captain the year after.

Fair enough pluggs.
Anyway all i care about is getting 10 leaders for our next real tilt at a flag.
I feel confident TC will be a future leader.

Geary is a b grader and still our 3rd best player under 30.
Thats because we have hardly any good players between 23 and 30.
Its a massive hollow there. Armo geary and jack. Thats it. Maybe gilbo and schneids and joey are 30 next season so dont count.
Just bagging geary doesnt make other players magically appear.

Jack Newnes will be captain in 2016. Rooey until then. Jack will start serving his apprenticeship now. Newnes is a class act and respected by his peers - older and younger.
AwayInUSA no longer ... have based myself back in Melbourne for a decade of Saintsational Success (with regular trips back to the USA)

Is there 2 of you posting under the one name. One post says fair enough and the other sounds like a 5 year old. Yes i live in East Bentleigh. Must be an area for common sense. Seems people in Freo are lacking that. lets do a poll and see if anyone thinks Curran could possible be captain in one more season of footy and lets do a poll and see if it is just common sense to say he isnt a hop or if its to do with where you live. Reckon common sense wins out.
