Re: Draft history to forget
to be fair any pick after 50 is going to be more miss then hit ... its the first picks and second picks that hurt when they fall apart ...
looking at the some of the phantom drafts of the past few years its interesting to see that there even the phantom drafts would have given us duds with the late picks and with the exception of 2008 we would have still been in the current situation (if not slightly worse off) ...
2006:
9 - ST KILDA - MITCHELL THORP
27 - ST KILDA - WILL SCHOFIELD
59 - ST KILDA - HAYDYN KIEL
74 - ST KILDA - CLARK KEATING
85 - ST KILDA - STEFAN MARTIN
87 - ST KILDA - BRETT COLLINS
2007:
9 - Ben McEvoy
42 - Chris Kangars
57 - Haelen Kay
70 - Fraser Gehrig
2008:
13- Jackson Trengrove
47 - Dan Hannebery
48 - Jay Shannon
62 - Ian Richardson
74 - Adrian Bonaddio
2009:
32- Sam Reid
60 - Nick Winmar
64- Marcus Davis
77 - Josh Donaldson
93 - Luke Miles
2010:
24. Mitch Hallahan
43 Jarrad Blight
59 Hayden Yarren
79 Beau Dowler
90 Travis Johnstone
103 Polo

Re: Draft history to forget
The three drafts of 08,09, & 10.
17 players selected. Only 2 remain. Worst in the competition.
Thank goodness we picked up our game in 2011 & 12. Interestingly, it coincided with Pelchen's arrival and Elshaug's promotion to chief recruiter.

Re: Draft history to forget
From 2005 to 2009, the success rate for the Saints was:
National draft 22% (Gilbert Armitage, McEvoy, Steven, Stanley, Siposs)
Rookie draft 22% (Geary, Jones, Dawson, Simpkin)
48 players selected and only two A graders in Steven and Gilbert.

Re: Draft history to forget
I remember we picked up some bloke called Frost or Ford can't remember but it was the pick directly before West Coast picked up Peter Matera!
That was an early pick in round one! Onoe of the worst recruiting moves ever in the history of the club. I know West Coast would have been hiding players
in the WAFL in those days, but hindsight is a wonderful thing!

When Harvey played his first game in 1988, I was a 12yo wearing short pants and struggling with my readin', writin' and 'rithmetic in grade eight. Now, I'm a father of three and a retired AFL player. And he's still going. Amazing! - Michael Voss

Re: Draft history to forget
actually had Lovett not stuffed up that trade wasnt too bad if you go with exactly what was picked with that pick .. Jasper Pittard isnt exactly A grade so if on that unfortunate night that Lovett was eventually found not guilty of a crime had never happened i reckon we would have got some good games out of him (possibly being that 1% extra to pinch that 2010 flag) ...saintspremiers wrote:Our trade for pick 16 for Lovett was a disgrace also.

That is the next one I am looking at trades - good/bad , just looked at actual drafting decisions in this team.st_Trav_ofWA wrote:actually had Lovett not stuffed up that trade wasnt too bad if you go with exactly what was picked with that pick ..
