Draft history to forget

Going back a little back when rumour often dictated draft picks I thought for a bit of fun draft picks made built up and failed or just bad choices. I tried to keep it to rnd 1 and 2 although a few there which came with big wraps being later picks. Some may think a bit harsh on some but some decisions like the Clarke boys based on where they were picked , - not the players fault:

HB:Frost, Fergusson,R Clarke
C:Healy, Beetham, McLaren
HF: Walton, Hemley,Begley
F: Howard, Kitschki , Sims
Foll: Thornburrow, Malone, Atkinson

don't know about the others- But X did play 100 games-- more than many famed saints .. so yes may not have reached' potential' but better than hundreds of other.

Clarkes were probably the hardest on the list , but through my own limitation of 1st and 2nd round picks or hyped picks they made the list - granted a limited sample.

Should change either for Danny Craven

I wasn't a massive Raph fan, but if you have a look at the available talent for the 2003 draft , you'd have to be a fortune teller to find the diamands in the rough there.
Raph was better than many there.
The trouble is it just took so long before he wasn't clearly best 22 anymore ( so more an issue with our later drafting ).

David Strooper pick 4 in the 1994 pre season draft has to be up there.

In mentioning those players, we should also remember that the club has a woeful history in developing new and young talent and always looked for the quick fix in whatever they did. Let's hope this has now turned around for the good of the club

I would have to think Rob Malone will probably top the team as captain- Pick 7 I think, Hudson loved him . WC offered Brett Heady for the pick and we knocked it back. Played a total of 0 games.

Wakelins? Gowans but they werent from Adelaide. they went to Adelaide.

Michael Frost - Stan Alves love child - played a good game v us once and got delisted and grabbed him with a first rounder.

I'd say that in 2011 and 2012, we did better than all those years put together.

That's about a 20% hit rate. Only Melbourne have fared worse, but they can be damned more than us, as they had decent draft picks.

We had only 3 picks inside the top 20 in 6 drafts. We have that many in this year's draft alone.

There is a constant though. Only 2 picks in the top 10 and they are at the top end and only one other pick in the top 20. Certainly an excuse but not a complete excuse for some of the drafting. The drafting has been a much bigger issue than the trading IMO.

Regarding top 20 picks in that period, Carlton had 9 picks, many of those in the top 5, and Essendon had 8. Geelong had 6, plus a father/son selection who would have gone pick 1.

Our highest pick in that whole period was pick 9. We have to go back 11 years for our last pick inside the top 5. That's a long time.

There have been some seriously weak draft pools, particularly 2004. I hope that this year is stronger than that
