Where's the cheese: our one hole
Now that we are excited about the recent trades, one hole will need to be filled in about 2 to,3 years: leadership. According to a sports psychologist I spoke to recently, young players--because of youthful enthusiasm, low expectations, and no burnout--can sometimes thrive without leaders. After about 3 to 5 years, however, many players begin to falter unless inspired by the right mentor or leader.
Will any of our existing players be able to assume this role in 3 to 5 years. Do any of the players exhibit the necessary qualities: a touch of charisma, a passion to lead, significant experience, and above average ability--qualities that seem to inspire younger players. Some of our players, like Jack Steven, will exhibit one attribute but perhaps not all attributes. Other older players, like Tom Lee, will still not be experienced enough. Yet, at this time, such leadership will be vital.
I think we need to consider two options.
1. At this time, recruit a top player or two, but at the end of their careers, for a year or so to lead our players.
2. Sacrifice quite a few draft picks and the like to secure a couple of top players from other clubs.
Thoughs?

Newnes, Curren & Markworth appear to have the right temperament.

Re: Where's the cheese: our one hole
the onus here is on SW.
One thing about GT, love him or hate him... he really managed to develop the teams next generation of leaders out of the plethora of youngs players at the club.
SOme like Ball and Roo were always going to be leaders whilst others like Dal, Monty, Blake etc developed skills over time.
Do it SW

Likely leadership group for the post- Roo, Lenny, Joey, Sean Dempster world.... i.e. 3 years or so time...
Gears, Armo (already members), Jack Newnes, Tom Curren, Jack Steven and Seb Ross (all current members of the 'emerging leaders' group).
Seem pretty solid to me.

Interesting post, Jack Newmes looks like a natural leader to me.
A week ago we assumed the next captain would be Benny Mac! How much can change in a week...

I don't think we need to get older players in for the purpose of leadership, there are plenty of men in there who will take this on naturally - we may be surprised who. Or it may be more collective than that.

We already have players on board as we do not just have a group of kids now...and oldies. ie We now have a much more even age profile after the last two years of recruiting.Southern Moss wrote:Now that we are excited about the recent trades, one hole will need to be filled in about 2 to,3 years: leadership. At the end of the day it was either GT or Chris Connolly.
GT did do some good things but the question remains, did he do more bad than good. It really depends on who you ask.

I wonder if it's a case of having to wait until the chemistry is established, or almost established, for this next core group of players coming through, and from that the Leaders might pick themselves. We need a Joel Selwood.

Geelong's got one - we should see if they will let us have him.........Cairnsman wrote:I wonder if it's a case of having to wait until the chemistry is established, or almost established, for this next core group of players coming through, and from that the Leaders might pick themselves. Seb Ross looks like an intense little f%$#er. He would freak me out and make me play better because he looks pissed off even when he's not. I like an intense captain. Your best buddy types don't do it for me. Geary would be a good Paul Kelly type captain. You know he would inspire by having his head shoved into the shins of the opposition at any opportunity.

I agree with those putting Gears forward, at least for match day leadership. I don't think I've seen him speak publicly though.

Re: Where's the cheese: our one hole
From what I've seen at Sandy, it's Jack Newnes or Daniel Markworth.
I know Daniel hasn't played a game yet, but he is a class act.

Funnily enough, the club has people in place who are trained in identifying, nurturing and developing leaders. Every workplace does this.
