Avaliable jumper numbers
So a look at the official website confirms the jumper numbers available for new recruits are 5, 15, 23, 26, 27, 36, 38, 40 and 44. My question is who do you want to see fill these jumper numbers. If we end up recruiting Delaney, Bruce and Longer (which is likely). Do they go to new recruits or do we upgrade anyone? There is quite a few famous numbers in there. Personally i'd like to see
#5 - First draft pick (Aish, Kelly, Billings ect)
#15 - Delaney. Wears the number at North. Since it's avaliable I don't see why he can't have it at St Kilda
#23 - Longer. Been a good number for big men. Lot of history
#26 - Second draft pick. Good number for midfielders. If he can play half as well as the previous player to wear it we'll be laughing.
#27 - Savage. Arguably the most famous number in our history. I'd like it to go to a mid
#36 - Bruce. Wears #47 currently for GWS. Bit of an upgrade number wise and the chance to see a number not often worn at AFL level for St Kilda.
#38, #40 and #44 to be distributed among the new draftees.

Re: Avaliable jumper numbers
Longer wears #5 at Brisbane so if he comes across he will probably take it. Savage would look alright in the #15

What about Tommy Curren. Surely he gets a an opportunity to upgrade his number?

Agreed. He is now our family's vote for the number 26.ChelseaGuy wrote:What about Tommy Curren. Surely he gets a an opportunity to upgrade his number?

Re: Avaliable jumper numbers
44 should be put to rest for a while, Milney was a fantastic servant of the club, not only on the field but off it, in some dark times he was a main draw card for us fans to go and watch.
Not only that, but 44 is a number not used all that often and if it is used, it's usually given to a player who more than likely wont be on the list in 2 years time.
I'd like to see it put aside for someone special.
Or a tradition be made out of it, like its given to our first draft pick to wear for a year before then next first pick.

Re: Avaliable jumper numbers
I would loke #44 to go to a young bloke by the name of honeychurch if we pick him up (given our picks it doesn't seem likely).
He doesn't have the tricks of milney, but has all the tenacity and cheekiness that made milney such a fan favourite. Watching the TAC this year
and knowing milney wouldn't be around forever I really want us to pick him up as milney mk2

I am actually quietly hoping that #44 goes to Chris Cain. As a Port Melbourne fan i'd love nothing more than to pick Cain up at maybe pick 41.
He's an out and out gun and could add something to our midfield instantly

For sure.mick13 wrote:I kind of want Curren to make a name for himself in #43.
40s numbers are underrated (maybe because I watch a lot of ice hockey). I'd take any of the 40s numbers (except 48 for some reason) over numbers such as 1, 3, 5, 8, 11, 15 (numbers I don't fancy).
Imagine if we got Billings and he took 44.... the whole world would stop... it'd be pretty cool tho.

I am not saying the number makes the playewr in any way shape or form. I like to take an interest in the jumper numbers of the new players and I always have.

Re: Avaliable jumper numbers
Why is 27 argueably the most famous number? I can only remember Peter Bennett wearing that number. Surely you are not relying on Breen's point?

Re: Avaliable jumper numbers
The simple fact that Breen was the first Saint to play 300 games, we've had champions wear the number and, yes the fact that in every Saints highlights package a man in #27 is kicking the winning point for our sole premiership victory. The reason I use the word arguably is because there will be so much conjecture and discussion as to which number is our most famous/important.

Greatest number 27 ever (even if Dad did type his name at the bottom of our draft pick list).
And he had magical powers - he once waved his arms at Glen Jakovich who was alone in the back pocket. Under this spell the key backman immediately collapsed to the ground having "done his knee" in front of a shocked home crowd.

Re: Avaliable jumper numbers
Yes he is 26. But Cain is a gun. Our midfield, especially now, sorely lacks experience and he brings that. He has great skills, is hard at it and wins his own ball. He may work out but he may not. It's worth a shot to see if he could be our version of Dwyer or Pods. Could easily get 3 years out of him while the next generation is getting ready. I'm not saying we spend an early pick on him at all, maybe throw him on the rookie list and see how he goes.LTN16 wrote:Do you think Chris Cain could be the next Sam Dwyer?Hurricane wrote:I am actually quietly hoping that #44 goes to Chris Cain. Re: Avaliable jumper numbers
What difference does anything posted on this forum or any other make? It's a bit of fun and something that personally interests me. If it doesn't interest you or as you so elegantly stated "who gives a f-----" then don't look at or post in the thread. There are plenty of others around to look atGurgman wrote:Hurricane wrote:I give a f***.Gurgman wrote:Sorry to the poster but who gives a f----- who wears what number , does the number make a player , a player makes the number not the other way around
